Yin's POV
The moment I saw Irene's face, I knew something was very wrong.
She sat in that chair looking small and defeated in a way I'd never seen her before. Her eyes were red like she'd been fighting tears. Her knuckles were white where they gripped her walking stick.
Someone was going to pay for putting that look on her face.
"Lord Yin," Chancellor Whitmore said, standing but not offering any gesture of respect. "Thank you for coming so quickly."
I didn't acknowledge her greeting, keeping my attention on Irene. "Irene, are you alright?"
She nodded but didn't speak, didn't meet my eyes.
I turned to the Chancellor, letting some of my irritation show. "What is this about?"
"Your wife was caught cheating on an examination," Whitmore said with poorly disguised satisfaction. "We have a zero-tolerance policy for academic dishonesty at this institution."
"I didn't cheat," Irene said quietly, her voice thick with suppressed emotion.
