"Hands where we can see them!"
The soldiers formed a tight circle around us, automatic weapons trained on our chests. Professional military gear, black tactical uniforms, faces hidden behind combat visors. Not local law enforcement. This was federal.
"Department of Supernatural Affairs," the squad leader announced through his helmet speaker. "You're in violation of Section 12 of the Paranormal Registration Act. Surrender immediately."
I looked at Alexander. His eyes were still glowing with that silver light from our bonding ritual, but now there was something else mixed in. Gold flecks that seemed to pulse with their own rhythm.
"What's the Paranormal Registration Act?" I called out.
"Ignorance of the law is not a defense. Last warning—surrender or we will use force."
That's when I felt it.
