Sparks rained from the ceiling as Adam rolled out from behind the console, coughing through thick smoke. The acrid scent of burnt circuits filled the chamber, mingling with the hum of emergency power. Crimson warning lights bathed the room in flickering chaos. The intruder had vanished as quickly as he'd appeared, leaving behind scorched panels, a fractured interface, and a thousand questions.
Adam dragged himself up using the edge of the console, wincing as pain flared through his ribs. "Operator," he rasped, his voice raw. "What's our status?"
"Core systems compromised," the Operator replied. Though synthetic, its voice carried a faint edge. "Defense protocols are holding at seventy-three percent. Most damage is in the auxiliary grid. Your vitals remain stable."
Adam coughed again and wiped soot from his jacket. "Well, I'm still breathing. Could be worse." He glanced around at the wreckage. "He didn't just come here to redecorate. Did he leave anything?"
A holographic schematic shimmered to life, casting a pale blue glow over the console. In the lower quadrant of the neural map, a single red pulse blinked steadily.
"Data spike detected," the Operator said. "Encrypted payload. Origin unknown. Coordinates were tagged within the injection."
Adam squinted at the map. "Let me guess—somewhere deep, dangerous, and definitely not on my vacation list?"
The image zoomed out to reveal a stretch of lush green.
"Amazon basin," the Operator confirmed. "Anchor Facility Theta-9. Decommissioned after Project Vanguard."
Adam crouched by a scorched terminal, pulled open a hidden panel, and retrieved a weathered case. Inside were tools, backup drives, and a vial of emergency serum—still intact. "Figures. It's always the jungle."
"I advise caution," the Operator said. "Sensor projections suggest a seventy-eight percent chance of hostile encounters."
Adam closed the case and slung it over his shoulder. "When has that ever stopped us?" He gave the room one last look. "Whatever he left—it's bait. And I'm not the kind to ignore it."
The orb above the console dimmed, casting long shadows across the control panels.
"Adam, going deeper means the return path gets harder."
He paused in the doorway, voice lower now. "Yeah. I know. But if I back off, people I care about will pay the price. That's not something I can live with."
Without another word, he disappeared into the corridor's flickering light.
Elsewhere…
Inside the decaying husk of an old satellite relay station orbiting Earth, a cracked monitor flickered to life. Static rolled across the screen, showing grainy footage of Adam descending into a dark elevator shaft.
A tall figure stood silently before the screen, arms crossed over a long coat. In the dim glow, a mechanical implant glinted beneath his left eye.
"He's taken the bait," he murmured.
A crackling voice answered from the communicator at his hip. "Phase Two is green. Proceed."
The figure nodded once. The monitor shifted to a new feed, this time showing a sealed vault. Inside, dormant machines began to stir. Red lights blinked to life—slow, synchronized, and menacing.
The next phase had begun.
