Valerie nearly dropped the glass she was holding when Jay finally voiced it. "You've lost your mind," she whispered, staring at him as though he'd grown two heads.
Jay didn't flinch. "It's the only thing left. Nothing else is reaching her. Not love, not pleading, not even Anya. But fear…" He leaned in, voice dropping to a near growl. "Fear might break through the wall she's built."
"You're saying " Valerie's throat went dry. "You're saying you'll put on Tobias' face? Pretend to come after her child?"
"Yes." Jay's reply was flat. "Her instincts won't let her watch Anya get hurt. Even if she wants to die, the mother in her will fight. And if she fights once, even once, we can drag her back."
Valerie's stomach churned. "That's insane."
Jay didn't back down. "So is letting her waste away like this."
