The convoy screeched into the compound, headlights slicing through the night. Valerie was the first out, her heels striking the pavement hard. She barely heard the men unloading the incubator or the machines,her eyes were fixed on Elena's stretcher being carried inside.
Her chest ached. Regret throbbed deeper than any wound. She had spent her whole life keeping Dominic at arm's length, always hating , always fighting instead of embracing the bond they had. And now… now it was too late, she can never see her brother again .
She followed the stretcher into the guest wing, where doctors connected Elena to machines, and nurses adjusted the incubator where the tiny baby lay breathing faintly.
Valerie's hands trembled as she approached. Her eyes lingered on Elena's face, pale and still, then dropped to the fragile child. For a long moment she couldn't speak.
