The dining hall falls quiet. Every sound seems to vanish except the steady thud of my heart. The weight in the air presses down on me as I stare at Ethan and Lerina. Their smiles stretch across their faces, but they're fakeāso fake it makes my skin crawl.
I grin back, letting my voice cut through the silence, sharp but playful. "Well, you don't have to say anything. You invited me to dinner, so why would I say no?"
I walk toward the long table and slide into a chair without waiting for them. Dorian takes the seat right beside me, close enough that his arm brushes mine. His presence steadies me, the mate bond humming warm in my chest like a shield.
I glance at Ethan and Lerina, widening my grin, and motion to the seats across from me. "Go on, sit down. Or am I not welcome to eat now?"
They laugh, both of them at the same time, the sound stiff and forced.
