A few days later, Liam and Ronan stood before Borin in his office. They had formally requested permission to use the Compact's resources to investigate their personal case. They laid out everything they knew: the Redactor, the systematic erasure of history, the forged report on the Pumping Station disaster, and their suspicion of the Blank Page Legion.
Borin listened in silence, his fingers steepled. He looked at the evidence, then at the two young men before him. He had seen their competence and their courage.
"An organization dedicated to erasing history is a threat to the very structure of this city," Borin stated finally. "That makes it the Compact's business." He nodded slowly. "Permission granted. However, I cannot spare the entire team for a ghost hunt. Greta and I are needed for other contracts."
He looked at a map on his wall. "This mission requires subtlety, not strength. It is a matter of infiltration and information gathering." He turned back to them. "Therefore, it will serve as an advanced training exercise. Cain and Isolde will accompany you. Their skills complement your own. Cain will handle reconnaissance, Isolde will provide supernatural countermeasures. Ronan will strategize, and Liam… you will be our compass, pointing us toward the echoes of the past."
It was more than they had hoped for. They had a team. And they had a mission.
