Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: New Teammates (Sort Of)

As the figure approached us we quickly hid. (I guess this time I'm really dying.)

Kevin was trembling. I did more. A thousand things went through my mind in that split second.

The figure got closer and closer and (my heartbeat was racing. Wait….)

It's a man. He didn't see us.

"There's no monster, let's go," he said.

And I saw a few more shadows behind him. They were survivors, just like us.

What should I do, man. Damn those lizards.

24 HOURS AGO (21.5.2030 AD)

I entered this, almost second home, building which is where I worked.

Just like always, with food in my hand (I don't get time to eat) I handed one coffee cup to the security guard, who happened to be the person I talked to most every day.

While I was checking in, and as I entered this hellhole of computers, I got informed that the boss wanted to see me. (I didn't even get time to sit down at my table.)

I pressed the doorknob hard before entering. (It's a trap, don't go.)

"You wanted to see me, boss," I asked.

"Yes, I wanted to talk about something," he replied in a disappointing manner.

"Sit down." I did.

"I was looking at your contribution to the new update and I see you are severely lacking on it. Perhaps there's a reason behind it, I believe."

"Boss, I have been struggling to find a new place to live since it has been hard for me to look for vacant places while crashing in motels every night."

"I understand your situation, but I have a company to run, Dave, therefore I have no choice."

"What do you mean, boss."

"You're fired. Please return your I-card, clear up your desk, log off your computer, and cut any relation to us that provides you any external perks."

"No, please don't do that, boss."

"It's the higher-ups, I can't do anything in this matter."

I said nothing. I just quietly cleaned my desk. (Quietly? You must have said a thousand different variations of insults to your boss while cleaning.)

My best friend, the security guard, gave me his house keys and said I could stay at his place until I found a new job and a place to live. (He is an angel.)

I got out of the building with two things: hate and messed up fate. (Nice rhyme, but true.)

Man, this whole freaking world is just there to mess with me. (Kind of.)

I walked and walked until my heart started to throb violently.

What was going on. And as this went on for a full minute, I calmed down.

What is this noise behind me.

And as I turned, I saw…..

24 HOURS LATER

Kevin and I calmed down. (Soul didn't leave, for now.)

Kevin kept poking my belly.

"What happened," I whispered.

"Let's go meet them," Kevin suggested.

"No, let's go back." (It's too early.)

"Why," he questioned. (It's too early. It's too early.)

"They might be bad people."

Kevin didn't say anything. "I hope you understand," I said. He nodded.

But as I was watching them, they turned toward our location at the supermarket. (No, no, please not that way, I guess I have no choice.)

I put my items inside my bag to reduce suspicion.

"Heyy!!!" I called them from behind.

They looked back. Their faces lightened.

"You guys are survivors?" I asked.

"Yes," they said, coming towards us.

They were a group of five. (Really!! Five?)

"Hi, I'm Ronnie Holts, nice to meet you." (Leadership complex, I get it, man, you got "leadership qualities.")

"Nice to meet you too, and you guys?" I asked.

"I'm Emberly DeAndre." (Looks like a nice lady, I guess.)

"I'm Kayce." (Case, really?)

"With a K." (Oh, Kayce, but still weird.)

"I'm Avianna." (What's with this slicked-back hair?)

"Wrenley." (You an attitude boy, huh.)

"I'm Dave."

"I'm Kevin," Kevin said, after gathering a little courage.

"Are you guys only two," Ronnie asked.

"Yes."

"What are you guys doing here, it's dangerous out here," Holts asked.

"We hid inside a building's parking lot and stayed there for the night."

"What about you guys." (I lied.)

"We live in the same building, and as we heard screams and saw those monsters, by the time we found a safe place to hide, we five were the only ones left in the building, and with some collaborative effort we temporarily saved our lives."

"Nice, but where are you guys headed that way." (I have to do something.)

"Wanna come with us."

"Sure, it's not like we have a choice in this situation." (I would have if they didn't go in this direction.)

"Let's go then."

"Hey wait, let's not go in that direction," I suggested.

"Why," they asked.

"We came from that direction last night running, and there still might be some of those monsters."

"Oh, ok then, let's go in the other direction." (Safe for now, but it's still dangerous.)

We started walking together. "What do you guys do?" I asked.

"I may not look like it, but I work for this investment firm and I'm the head of marketing." (Boring..)

"I'm a middle school teacher and I'm 29," Emberly said quietly with a soft, calming voice. (In this day, do girls even tell their age. My bad.)

"I work for security in the same firm as Ronnie," Kayce declared. (Interesting.)

"I'm a high school student." (Slickback girl, you look like more of a child.)

"I used to work at a corporate job, but I quit my job after my son got a job, and he insisted I quit this job because I'm getting too old, jeez, what a boy I have, I wonder if he is all right." (You sure look old, sir.)

"Wow, you guys were really living good until those monsters ruined it."

They all just shrugged, saying what can we do, it's not like we can change it.

"What about you, Dave," Emberly asked.

"Me, I'm a game developer for LEAD DEVS."

"That's nice," everyone said in their own way.

We kept walking and we hit a dead end at the highway, and what we saw was unexpected but….
