Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

The Academy classroom buzzed with noise as students filtered in. Some sparred verbally, others compared new jutsu scrolls they had borrowed, and a few sat quietly in corners, preparing for the day's lessons.

Uchiha Kaito slipped into his seat near the window, leaning back casually as if the world outside didn't interest him. Yet his eyes moved with subtle sharpness, observing every detail. He noticed how some of the clan children carried themselves—boastful, proud, eager to show off their heritage. Others, like orphans, lingered with uncertain expressions, trying not to be swallowed by the chatter.

Then, like a whirlwind, Kushina stormed into the room. "Out of the way! Don't block me, dattebane!" she barked at a boy who had accidentally stepped in her path. Her temper, as always, made half the class groan and the other half laugh nervously.

But instead of sitting with the other girls, Kushina plopped herself down next to Kaito's desk. "Morning," she said simply.

The room went quiet for a heartbeat.

No one missed it. Kushina—who usually called Kaito "that gloomy Uchiha"—had greeted him normally. A few students exchanged surprised looks. Whispers spread like fire in dry grass.

Kaito's lips curved faintly. "Morning."

Her eyes narrowed, suspicious. "What are you smirking for?"

"Nothing." He turned back to the window, but inside, he felt the system's hum again.

[Bond Strengthened: Kushina Uzumaki. Progress: 18%.]

The teacher arrived before anyone could tease them further, and lessons began. Chakra theory, transformation practice, and teamwork drills filled the hours. When the class split into pairs for taijutsu sparring, fate—or perhaps the system—once again threw Kushina and Kaito together.

"Don't hold back, Uchiha!" she shouted, tying her hair tighter.

Kaito raised his guard calmly. "I never do."

Their clash drew attention. Kushina's speed was wild, her strikes fierce, fueled by stubborn energy. Kaito, in contrast, moved with measured precision, blocking, redirecting, letting her exhaust herself. Every dodge and counter made the watching students murmur.

Then, in one swift motion, Kaito caught her wrist mid-punch and twisted slightly, sending her stumbling forward. She nearly fell, but his other hand caught her shoulder, steadying her.

For a breath, their faces were only inches apart. Her cheeks flushed bright red.

"L-let go!" she snapped, yanking her arm back.

Kaito released her smoothly, expression unreadable. But whispers rippled through the class again. Some smirked knowingly; others frowned in confusion.

Later, as training ended and the sun began dipping westward, Kushina stormed out of the Academy, clearly embarrassed. Kaito followed at a distance, not out of pity but out of instinct. Something about the way she carried herself tugged at him—too strong on the outside, too vulnerable within.

He wasn't wrong.

At the edge of the training grounds, a trio of older students blocked her path. They weren't from the Uzumaki clan, nor from any major family—just troublemakers who liked targeting anyone who stood out.

"Oi, red tomato," one sneered, "you think you're special just 'cause you yell all the time?"

"Maybe if you shut up for once, people wouldn't hate you."

Kushina froze, fists trembling. She tried to bark back, but the sting of their words bit deeper than she admitted. For a moment, her fiery eyes dimmed.

Before she could react, a voice cut through the air—low, calm, carrying an edge.

"Step aside."

The three turned. Uchiha Kaito stood behind them, hands in his pockets, his gaze sharp as a blade.

One of the bullies scoffed. "Oh, the gloomy Uchiha? Gonna brood us to death?"

They laughed.

Kaito's eyes narrowed. He didn't raise his voice, didn't move hastily. He simply stepped forward, the weight of his presence pressing on them. Even without his Sharingan awakened, there was something chilling in his stare—like a predator that had already decided the outcome.

The laughter faltered.

"Tch. Forget it," the leader muttered, pushing past. The others followed reluctantly, grumbling under their breath.

Silence lingered.

Kushina turned, staring at him. Her lips parted, but words didn't come. For someone who always spoke loudly, silence was rare.

Kaito met her gaze briefly before turning away. "Don't waste energy on people who don't matter."

She blinked. Then, for the first time, a small, genuine smile tugged at her lips.

[Bond Strengthened: Kushina Uzumaki. Progress: 32%.]

As he walked ahead, the system's voice hummed again in his mind:

[Quest Progressing: Form Bonds.][Hidden Path Unlocked: Influence of the Heart.]

Kaito exhaled slowly. The system wasn't just guiding his strength—it was weaving his fate deeper into the lives of others. Whether he wanted it or not, bonds were becoming his path forward.

And for the first time, as the sun dipped behind Konoha's walls, Uchiha Kaito wondered if maybe… just maybe… he didn't mind.
