Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 – Close Quarters

The reassignment became official the next morning.

Adrian Vale arrived at his desk to find a single, minimal message waiting in his inbox.

From: Lucian KaelSubject: RelocationBody: You now report directly to me. Office B, executive floor. 9:00 a.m.

No explanation. No welcome. No room for interpretation.

Within an hour, Adrian's desk had been dismantled by facilities and reassembled outside Lucian Kael's private office close enough that the faint hum of the CEO's presence felt like pressure against his skin.

The attention was immediate.

Whispers followed him down the corridor.Glances sharpened.Resentment stirred.

Ethan Hale watched him unpack with a tight smile. "Congratulations," he said lightly. "You just became the most hated omega in this building."

Adrian slid a data pad onto his new desk. "I'm aiming for most effective."

Ethan's eyes flicked to Lucian's closed office door. "That door changes people."

"Then it'll have to change me fast," Adrian replied.

The first late night came sooner than expected.

By 10:47 p.m., the executive floor was empty except for two lit offices.

Lucian's.And Adrian's.

Adrian was halfway through a hostile acquisition model when his screen darkened.

"Bring that in here."

Lucian's voice. Through the intercom. Low. Controlled.

Adrian gathered his tablet and entered the lion's den.

Lucian stood at the window again, city lights carving his silhouette in silver and shadow.

"You restructured the hostile entry plan," Lucian said without turning.

"Yes."

"You removed three leverage threats."

"They were bluffs," Adrian replied. "And they would've been called."

Lucian turned slowly. "You're certain."

Adrian stepped closer, laying the tablet on the desk. "We don't need intimidation. We need inevitability. Make them believe resistance is expensive and surrender is efficient."

Lucian studied the model.

Long silence.

Then, quietly: "You think like me."

The words landed heavier than praise.

Adrian held his ground. "I think like someone who refuses to lose."

Lucian's gaze lifted.

The air shifted.

Too close. Too quiet. Too charged.

Lucian moved around the desk, stopping an arm's length away. The alpha presence rolled off him restrained, disciplined, but unmistakable.

"You understand what proximity to power costs?" Lucian asked.

"Yes."

"You'll be watched. Tested. Targeted."

Adrian met his eyes. "So will you."

A flicker of something dangerous crossed Lucian's face.

"Careful."

"Always," Adrian replied.

For a moment, neither moved.

Their instincts stirred.

Alpha.Omega.

Control met defiance.

Lucian stepped back first.

"Go home," he said abruptly. "You'll burn out if you stay."

Adrian hesitated. "You're still working."

Lucian's jaw tightened. "That's not your concern."

Adrian turned to leave.

"Vale."

He stopped.

Lucian's voice was quieter. "You did well today."

Adrian inclined his head once and left.

Lucian remained alone long after.

He loosened his tie.

Exhaled.

Something inside him was fraying.

The omega unsettled him. Not with softness. Not with submission.

With equivalence.

For the first time in years, Lucian Kael wasn't the most dangerous mind in the room.

And that realization should've made him furious.

Instead,

It made him want Adrian Vale closer.
