Belle's POV
The phone rang at exactly midnight.
I grabbed it before the second ring, my heart beating. "Hello?"
"You have thirty minutes to get to the old oak tree behind your father's office building," a woman's voice said. "Come alone. Bring no one, or the deal is off."
"What deal? Who is this?"
But the line was already dead.
I threw on my clothes and snuck out of the house. My parents were sleeping, and I didn't want to wake them. Not yet. Not until I knew what was happening.
The drive to Father's office took twenty minutes. I parked in the back and walked toward the old oak tree where Jasper and I used to play hide and seek when we were kids.
Someone was already there.
A tall person stepped out from behind the tree. Even in the darkness, I knew those broad shoulders, that confident walk.
"Jasper."
