Chapter 31 - 31. The Friendly Neighborhood Returns

It was a normal day in Queens.

The sun was shining brightly over New York City, the streets were filled with civilians going about their daily lives, and everything seemed peaceful.

Until...

A robbery was happening downtown in Manhattan.

Ten police cars were chasing a heavily armored truck speeding through the streets. The vehicle was loaded with stolen heavy machinery, and the criminals inside were doing everything they could to escape.

Above them, two helicopters followed the pursuit. One belonged to the news channel from the Daily Bugle, while the other was a police helicopter assisting with the chase.

Inside the police helicopter, Yuri Watanabe watched the chaos unfold below. Her eyes remained focused on the speeding truck as she held onto the communication device.

Suddenly, the pilot called out to her.

"Chief! Where's your guy? Isn't he back from vacation yet?!"

Yuri chuckled softly, shaking her head.

"Come on, it's been a while since we had a good chase without him," Yuri replied. "Though, I really did miss when Spider-Man made our jobs easier."

Before the pilot could respond, the situation below suddenly escalated.

The robber inside the truck pulled out a bazooka and aimed it toward the pursuing police vehicles.

One officer immediately noticed the weapon.

"Oh, you have got to be kidding me."

The officer quickly moved into position, trying to fire at the runaway truck while maintaining pursuit.

The criminals laughed from inside the vehicle.

"Eat shit, police!"

The bazooka fired.

A rocket launched from the weapon, flying directly toward the ten police cars behind them.

For a brief moment, everyone froze.

The officers watched as the incoming projectile closed the distance. The explosion would have been devastating, destroying multiple vehicles and putting countless lives at risk.

But before the rocket could reach them...

A web shot out.

The web attached itself to the rocket, stopping its trajectory.

Everyone looked up.

The rocket suddenly changed direction as it was pulled upward, then swung around in a strange motion before landing onto the street.

And riding on top of it...

Was Spider-Man.

"I'M HOOOMMMEEE, NEW YORK!!!"

The familiar voice echoed across the streets.

Spider-Man had returned.

But this time, he looked different.

His suit remained recognizable, but his mask had received a fresh new upgrade. Instead of his previous plated mechanical eyes, his lenses were now designed like sleek sunglasses, giving him a more modern appearance.

However, the stylish look was only part of the upgrade.

Hidden inside the lenses was a fully integrated A.I. system, personally created and programmed by Spider-Man himself.

The police helicopter's communication system suddenly rang.

Yuri glanced down before answering.

"Miss me, Captain?" Spider-Man joked through the comms.

Yuri couldn't help but smile.

"Heh, took you long enough. How was vacation?" she asked casually, despite the dangerous chase happening below.

"Oh, it was cool," Spider-Man replied. "Also, I got you a present from Paris. Thought it would make a good luck charm for your marriage life."

There was a brief silence.

"...."

Yuri slowly processed his words.

"You just exposed the present."

Spider-Man remained quiet for a moment.

"And ugh..." Yuri sighed. "Don't I really miss those lousy jokes of yours."

"Hey, those jokes got us out of trouble more times than we could count, Yuri."

"Very funny," Yuri replied. "And why exactly are you surfing on a bazooka rocket in the middle of the streets of New York?"

Spider-Man looked down at the rocket beneath his feet.

"...."

A moment of silence passed.

"Dramatic entrance?"

Yuri stared blankly at him through the helicopter camera.

"Very funny. Get rid of it."

Spider-Man laughed.

"Hah, and that's why I love you, Yuri. Still the same as ever."

"Ugh. Maybe I regret wanting you back from your vacation."

"Too late," Spider-Man replied. "But yeah, let's get to work, guys."

Spider-Man pushed himself off the rocket, flipping backward through the air.

Using his web shooters, he grabbed the rocket and launched it high above the streets, far away from the surrounding buildings.

Once it reached a safe distance...

Spider-Man fired another web.

The rocket exploded harmlessly in the sky, far away from any civilians.

The officers below watched in relief.

Spider-Man landed on the side of a building, crouching as he looked toward the fleeing truck.

"Now then..."

His tone shifted slightly.

"You two symbiotes ready?"

Inside Spider-Man's body, two voices reacted.

Venom laughed loudly within his consciousness.

"Haha! Oh, it's so on. The thrill is exciting!"

The symbiote's excitement was clear, almost eager for the battle ahead.

However, Anti-Venom was not impressed.

Within Spider-Man's consciousness, Anti-Venom simply stared silently at the robbery unfolding ahead.

After a few seconds, he sighed.

"Sigh... let's get to work."

Peter swung effortlessly through the city, weaving between towering skyscrapers as he closed the distance on the armored vehicle. His webs snapped from building to building with practiced precision, each swing carrying him closer to the fleeing robbers.

Inside the truck, panic began to spread.

"Shit, where's the boss?!" one of the robbers shouted, frantically looking out the rear window.

A deafening explosion suddenly erupted ahead.

BOOM!!

The armored truck lurched violently as something enormous crashed onto the street, forcing the driver to slam on the brakes.

Peter sighed beneath his mask.

"Of course he's here."

A massive figure slowly emerged from the cloud of dust, his armored hide gleaming beneath the sunlight.

"Hahaha!!! The Rhino is back!" Aleksei Mikhailovich Sytsevich roared dramatically, pounding his fists against his chest before lowering his horn toward Spider-Man.

"Spider-Man! You're mine!"

Peter narrowed his eyes behind his upgraded lenses.

"Arachne, check status."

His suit's artificial intelligence immediately responded.

"Scanning threat..."

A thin blue holographic interface flashed across Peter's vision as data rapidly flowed through his lenses.

"Scan completed."

Information about Rhino's armor, structural integrity, impact force, and weak points instantly appeared before Peter's eyes while he continued moving, never taking his attention off his opponent.

Rhino let out another furious roar before charging.

The pavement shattered beneath every thunderous step as he barreled straight toward Spider-Man like a runaway freight train.

Peter waited until the last possible second before firing a web onto a nearby traffic light.

He swung gracefully over Rhino's head, causing the giant brute to smash straight through several parked vehicles instead.

"Come on, Rhino!" Spider-Man called out, waving his hand playfully. "Let's play Follow the Leader!"

Rhino growled.

"Stop running and fight me!"

"Oh, I am fighting you."

Peter fired another web and launched himself farther away, deliberately baiting Rhino.

"You've just gotta keep up!"

Unable to resist the taunt, Rhino charged after him.

The chase continued through several blocks before the buildings gradually gave way to a wide open field.

Peter landed lightly on the ground, turning to face the charging behemoth with a confident stance.

"Perfect."

Rhino lowered his head.

"I've got you now!"

He charged.

Peter didn't move.

At the last second, black symbiote matter surged over his forearms as Venom eagerly answered the call.

"Now we're talking!" Venom laughed excitedly.

Peter fired several reinforced webs coated with the symbiote, anchoring them around Rhino's limbs and torso before attaching the opposite ends to massive concrete structures and steel supports surrounding the open area.

Rhino tried to push through them.

The reinforced webbing stretched...

Then snapped back with overwhelming force.

Rhino lost his balance for a split second.

That was all Peter needed.

He launched forward, delivering a powerful symbiote-enhanced kick directly into Rhino's jaw before following it with a barrage of rapid punches.

The massive villain staggered backward.

Peter finished the sequence by wrapping Rhino completely in layers upon layers of reinforced webbing, pinning his arms tightly against his body before slamming him onto the ground with a final web-assisted throw.

The earth trembled from the impact.

Rhino groaned, struggling against the bindings, but the combined strength of Spider-Man's webbing and Venom's symbiote enhancement kept him firmly restrained.

"Niceee going, partnerrrrr..." Venom said, stretching every word with obvious amusement.

Peter blinked.

"Why do you say it like that?" he asked within the privacy of his suit.

"Like whatttttt...?!!"

"That!" Peter replied in exasperation. "For Christ's sake!"

A moment of silence followed.

Then Anti-Venom finally spoke.

"You two literally sound like brothers."

Peter and Venom answered at exactly the same time.

"WE'RE NOT!"

As Peter finished restraining Rhino, his communicator buzzed.

Yuri's voice came through almost immediately.

"We got them."

Peter smiled beneath his mask.

"The robbers?"

"Caught every last one of them. Nice timing."

Peter looked down at the unconscious Rhino wrapped tightly in layers of reinforced webbing.

"I've got another package for pickup. Sending Rhino's location now."

His suit transmitted the coordinates directly to the police network.

A brief pause followed before Yuri replied.

"Thanks for handling Rhino, Spider-Man."

Peter chuckled as he began swinging toward the city again.

"For you, Yuri? Anything to make our city a better place."

"Oh?" Yuri teased. "And what happened to Spider-Cop?"

Peter's eyes widened.

Then he burst into laughter.

"Puhahaha... I missed that."

"Meh," Yuri replied with a grin in her voice. "You're retired from being Spider-Cop."

"Hey! I only do Spider-Cop during interrogations now."

"Uh-huh... still cheesy." Yuri sighed dramatically. "I've got a mountain of paperwork waiting for me after this."

Peter laughed as he fired another web toward a nearby skyscraper.

"Want the usual? Extra sugar for the rush?"

There was a moment of silence.

"....."

"Make it double."

Another brief pause.

"And the pizza."

Peter smirked.

"Aww... I knew it. You and I are pizza lovers."

"That's so crude."

Without waiting for another joke, Yuri ended the call.

Peter simply laughed to himself before changing direction and swinging toward Joel's.

A few minutes later, he left another message for Yuri.

Rooftop delivery. Don't let the rookies steal it.

He carefully secured two extra-sweet coffees and a boxed pizza with webbing before hanging them from the rooftop access door of the police precinct where Yuri usually took her breaks.

Mission accomplished.

With the city finally quiet again, Peter stretched his shoulders as he made his way back to his penthouse.

The moment he stepped through the front door, exhaustion immediately caught up with him.

"Man..."

He let himself fall backward onto the sofa with a heavy sigh.

"I'm beat."

A black mass peeled away from his body.

Venom stretched like someone waking up from a satisfying nap before grinning widely.

"Easy for you to say."

Anti-Venom emerged shortly afterward, remaining as composed as ever.

"Thanks to you," Venom continued, opening the refrigerator without asking, "I don't need to eat humans or chocolate anymore."

"Progress," Peter muttered, too tired to argue.

The two symbiotes immediately began rummaging through the fridge, pulling out drinks and leftovers as if they owned the place.

Peter lazily pointed a finger toward them.

"You two... clean up after yourselves."

Venom glanced over his shoulder with an innocent expression.

"Oh, I'm sorry."

He deliberately knocked over a bottle.

"Did I make a mess?"

Peter sighed deeply.

"You did that on pur—"

Before he could finish his sentence, the sound of a bathroom door opening caught his attention.

Peter's eyes widened.

He immediately sat upright on the sofa.

Standing there was Emma Frost.

She stepped out of the bathroom looking completely relaxed, drying her hair with a towel as though she belonged there.

"That's the fifth time this week, Ms. Frost," Peter said, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Emma smiled with effortless confidence.

"Darling, you really should change your shampoo. It's less... delicate."

Peter blinked.

"...That's not even a word, is it?"

Emma chuckled softly.

With a simple snap of her fingers, her telepathic illusion disappeared, replacing her bath towel with her elegant white attire in an instant.

She folded her arms with an amused smile.

"So..."

Her sapphire eyes met Peter's.

"Are you still not interested?"
