Sydney.
Inside a villa.
Merchants, notables, legislators, and scholars chatted and laughed at the reception. In the center, a small group of seven or eight people captured the attention of the entire crowd. Surrounding them were a number of people, seemingly waiting for an opportunity to join them. A few beautiful vases, fortunate enough to be close by, listened intently to the conversation of the seven people, their smiles bright and subtle.
"It's been almost an hour, and the so-called Kaiju is still firmly blocked outside. This fully demonstrates the effectiveness of the Wall of Life. If we had adopted this method ten years ago instead of launching the Hunter Project, we would have been able to live in peace for several years. Fortunately, mistakes are always mistakes, and truth will eventually prevail. We are the saviors of this world!"
In the small group, a middle-aged man, holding a glass of wine, spoke passionately. He was one of the contractors for the Wall of Life. His construction company was responsible for the construction of the Wall of Life in Sydney. This made his life easier, and he made a lot of money from it.
"Who says it's not? Those who only have fighting in their minds are too rigid. It is obvious that only a city wall can keep those monsters out. Look, what have they done in these years? The funds invested in the Hunter Program have almost drained the financial reserves of member countries and even affected people's livelihood. Many people can't even afford to eat, and yet fighting is still the only thing on their minds." A celebrity with a small mustache and well-dressed clothes said compassionately.
"Before, General Stek of PPDC asked me if I should send his mecha hunters to deal with the monsters. Why should we do that? Isn't it enough to just prevent them from coming in? So I rejected his commission. I don't have extra money to pay for his security." The speaker was surrounded by the crowd and was the Senate Speaker, who was a little bald and had a bulging belly.
"The PPDC, an organization that's about to become history. Haven't they been banned by the Alliance and turned underground? In my opinion, they should destroy those few remaining Hunters! How can an underground organization stripped of its official status have bases and dangerous weapons?"
"General Steker is still worthy of respect. After all, he has made great contributions to world security."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Senator, the member states do not recognize the legitimacy of his position as general of the PPDC. Although everyone will respectfully address him as General when referring to him."
"That's true."
"Look at this wall in the picture. It's so solid! It's just like another miraculous engineering feat—the Great Wall!"
Everyone chatted with smiles on their faces. In front of them was a projected virtual screen. Outside the wall, a Kaiju was tirelessly pounding against what they called the Wall of Life.
Everyone around them was flattering and echoing the words of the core seven, until a ferocious Kaiju head suddenly emerged from the shattered city wall. Its axe-like head, its massive body swirling with flying stones and dust, stalked forward under the horrified gazes of the surrounding crowd, as if entering its own backyard.
His enormous pupils swayed back and forth in his eye sockets, watching the crowd not far away, screaming and fleeing like ants, a hint of human amusement revealed in his eyes. A huge roar, accompanied by the sound of a raging wind, spread far and wide throughout this city protected by the Wall of Life, making the panicked crowd even more panicked, and the frightened even more frightened.
Looking at the creature on the screen that had only taken an hour to break through the wall of life they had advocated before, and the huge roar accompanied by the panicked crowd, the smiles on their faces suddenly froze.
"Didn't they tell the people to go to shelters beforehand?" the Senate President, the most distinguished figure on the scene, asked dryly as he watched the Kaiju swagger through the breach in the Wall of Life, the panicked crowds running around on the screen, the bodies of people and buildings crushed to death by the Kaiju's tumbling, trampling, and shattering. He instinctively sensed something was amiss.
"We thought the wall of life was indestructible and didn't need..." The secretary beside him looked a little embarrassed.
"Is this a global broadcast?" The Speaker narrowed his eyes.
"Yes, there are reporters documenting the defensive capabilities of the Wall of Life to reassure people around the world." The secretary wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"Who assured me that the Wall of Life can stop Kaiju below level four?" the Speaker asked in confusion.
"Mr. Charles." The secretary answered tacitly.
The Speaker's majestic gaze fell on Mr. Charles, the wall contractor who looked nervous and flustered: "Perhaps, you need to give me and the entire public an explanation. This kind of project cannot be shoddy, Mr. Charles." After that, under the gaze of Charles, whose face was pale, his expression as if his wife and children had died, and his eyes full of pleading, the Speaker dropped the wine glass in his hand and walked out of the villa.
"Contact General Stek and have him send the hunters! Also, have the Eureka Raiders evacuated? If not, stop them! Have them stop this damn monster!" The Speaker lowered his voice and angrily instructed his secretary. He had already chosen the person to take the blame. If he wanted more room for maneuver and development, he had to minimize the losses.
…
PPDC, Cai Tiantong announced in a somewhat anxious tone.
"Another Kaiju beast's life signature has been added, and it's rapidly approaching Sydney."
"Tell me the strength!" Stek said with a serious face.
"Level 4!" Cai Tiantong replied.
"Where are the Eureka Raiders?"
"The retired Mr. and son Hansen have returned online."
"What did Sydney say?" Steck asked helplessly. In the past, whenever a Kaiju appeared, the PPDC had full authority to respond. Unlike now, after losing their official status, they had to obtain permission to offer assistance when a Kaiju appeared. Otherwise, if they mistook their hunters for intruders under the pretext of invading their territory and blew them up mid-air, or if they came to trouble them afterward, Steck would be left speechless.
"They requested to send a hunter to deal with the Kaiju." Cai Tiantong's tone was a little strange for a moment, especially when he remembered that an hour ago, the other party had just solemnly refused the assignment, claiming that the Wall of Life could protect their safety.
"Have the Alexis and their spouses prepared for the attack." Stek breathed a sigh of relief.
…
The Eureka Raider's massive body slammed heavily into a building, and immediately after, a giant rat-like creature with sharp teeth pounced on it.
"This isn't good. Did headquarters say when support will arrive?"
In the cockpit of the Eureka Raider, the previously defiant Chuck Hansen and his father, Heike Hansen, tacitly controlled the mech's roll to evade an attack, exchanging glances. With their synaesthesia system, their communication required no more than a glance. As a gifted hunter, Chuck certainly wasn't afraid of any Kaiju in a one-on-one situation.
The powerful Eureka Raiders have experienced many battles since they joined the army, and as many as nine Kaiju have died at the hands of them.
However, the strength of two level 4 Kaiju still put some pressure on them. Especially since they were very intelligent and had a strong sense of coordination, which made them even more difficult to deal with. What made Chuck even more angry and uneasy was that he felt the two Kaiju were playing tricks on them.
Yes!
Although this idea is abrupt and somewhat absurd, Chuck has this feeling. As a father who bridges synesthesia, he also agrees with his son's judgment.
These two Kaiju beasts were indeed teasing them like a cat teasing a mouse.
"Right now!" Heike Hansen, the father, punched the charging Kaiju, sending it stumbling. Immediately, another cunning Kaiju rammed it from behind. Its ferocious jaws clamped down on one of the aircraft's arms, and with a flick of its head, it tore out a tangle of parts. The Eureka Raider's fuselage shook, and a series of sparks erupted from the cockpit. Father and son reacted with remarkable swiftness, adjusting their positions to regain balance.
The coordinated attack of the two Kaiju made Hansen and his son suffer repeated defeats. If the two Kaiju had not intended to end the battle as soon as possible, if the father and son had not been excellent and alert enough, if the Eureka Raider was not a fifth-generation machine with a speed of 10 and energy parameters of 9, they would not have been able to hold on for so long.
But the Hansens knew that without support or surprise, and once the two Kaiju grew tired of playing, their best outcome would be a one-for-one trade. The previous wave of damage to the Eureka Raiders might have been a sign that the two Kaiju were no longer interested in Eureka.
A tremendous roar and flashes of fire streaked across the sky, and then a uniquely designed mecha slammed down from mid-air into the center of the battlefield, drawing a line between the Eureka Raider, whose arm was injured, and the Kaiju.
Cherno Alpha.
"Come on, cuties! Let's have a collision!"
A woman's voice was transmitted through the PDDC's mecha combat platform to the ears of Hansen and his son in the cockpit of the Eureka Raider.
Sasha Kadnovsky.
One of the pilots of the Cherno Alpha. A strong, resourceful, decisive, and well-connected woman. Often, she behaves less like a woman than a queen. Yet, you can't deny her excellence and strength. This is evident in her undefeated record of piloting the first-generation aircraft for so many years.
At least, looking at Cherno Alpha standing like a fortress between them and the two Kaiju, and looking at its metal body as solid as a mountain, they still felt safe.
"I think it's changed a lot," Chuck muttered to his father as he got up from the ground. As the first generation of the Cherno-Alpha, its appearance and functions were practically known to everyone at PPDC. Even though it had undergone numerous repairs and upgrades over the past decade, there hadn't been any significant changes.
"Recently, PPDC has made major upgrades to the active Mecha Hunters. It is said that they have replaced them with a lot of powerful weapons. We didn't catch up." Heike Hansen and his son took their positions at the same time and answered.
The two double-edged axes flipped 180 degrees, ejected from Cherno Alpha's arms, and were perfectly locked in his massive metal hands. The metal axe blades gradually turned red, then, like molten lava, emitted a golden, hot glow.
"Cool! I want one for my Eureka Raider, too." Chuck whistled, then with unexpected agility and speed, he swooped past the seemingly bulky Cherno Alpha and pounced directly on one of the Kaiju. Even if the machine was damaged, as long as the battle wasn't over and the machine wasn't completely uncontrollable, it wouldn't affect the hunter's ability to continue fighting.
Like a silent giant, Cherno Alpha also rushed towards another Kaiju with a knife-axe head.
Raise the axe high, move closer and chop down!
The melta axe in his right hand sliced through the Kaiju's thick skin like a knife through butter, its armor just as strong as the metal armor of a mecha. Before blood could spill, the heat from the axe evaporated it. Then, his left hand swung the axe upwards, leaving a massive X-shaped wound on the Kaiju within seconds.
The screams were deafening.
Cherno Alpha remained silent, like a ruthless butcher. After inflicting an X-shaped wound on the Kaiju, he seized the opportunity and chopped off both of its forelimbs with two consecutive blows of his axe. The wound remained charred black, but no poisonous blood spurted out. A stench of burning lingered in the air.
Equipping the mecha hunters with cold weapon-like weapons is a treatment that will only be available after the mecha technology is further developed in the future. In the first part, only the protagonist's machine has a chain sword.
Simple cold weapons have significant limitations against Kaiju. Not only do they take up space and weight, but they might also be ineffective against Kaiju. At least the Kaiju's skin armor is often comparable to the mecha's metal frame. If it can't penetrate the defense, or if it does penetrate but has little effect and instead causes more pollution, then it's better to have more plasma cannons or anti-monster missiles.
However, in the second part, the new generation of mechas are generally equipped with corresponding weapons, such as thermal chain swords, arc whips, ion double-edged swords, M19 "Morning Stars", elastic slingshots, etc. These weapons are indeed crucial for killing level 4 and 5 mechas, as well as some super-large Kaiju.
At least the Kadnovskys loved it. They'd even spent the last few months learning some cold weapon combat techniques, becoming incredibly skilled with those two axes. The Melta Axe undoubtedly transformed the rather bulky Cherno Alpha from a heavily armored boxer into a heavily armored berserker with explosive lethality.
In the past, it might take Cherno Alpha a long time to kill a level 4 Kaiju, but now, with two melta axes in his hands, Cherno Alpha said that as long as the Kaiju is not a special targeted one, it can kill one of them with one axe.
With a single blow, he brutally and violently chopped off the axe-like head of the Kaiju beneath him. Cherno Alpha's gaze fell on the nimble, mouse-like Kaiju on the other side, which relied on its teeth for maximum damage. The Kaiju, sensing his gaze, jumped in shock, especially its previously well-cooperated companion. The gruesome sight of its torn corpses had a profound psychological impact on it. It suddenly leaped to its feet, nearly two thousand tons in weight, supported by its powerful hind legs, and leaped nearly a hundred meters, attempting to leap over the damaged Wall of Life and return to the sea.
But how could Cherno Alpha just watch the other party escape?
The massive, unwieldy body stomped the ground in a circle, and using inertia, it swung the cooling melta axe in its left hand towards the fleeing Kaiju. With a scream, the axe embedded itself directly into the Kaiju's body. A metal wire was attached to the axe. A blinding arc of electricity flowed from its palm, along the wire, and directly into the wound inflicted by the axe, inflicting severe damage to the Kaiju's body.
This aborted its escape plan, and in the subsequent offensive by the Cherno Alpha and Eureka Raider mechas, it and its teammates were successfully killed.
Two mecha hunters stood side by side in the sunset. Near them were two lifeless Kaiju and a broken wall. This scene was excitedly photographed by a reporter who did not enter the shelter.
It also appeared in the eyes of all the people around the world who watched this picture.
