Chapter 8 - CHAPTER EIGHT: RUNNING, WANTING

Layla stared at her phone for the third time that morning, Liam's name glowing at the top of their chat. His last message from the night before sat there, warm and unassuming.

Goodnight, Layla. I don't know what you're thinking right now, but I hope it's something that makes you smile.

Her thumb hovered dangerously close to the options menu. Block. One tap and she could erase him. One tap and she could protect herself from falling too hard, too fast.

She imagined the silence that would follow. No more "good mornings." No more teasing about her coffee addiction. No more late-night calls that made her feel seen in ways she hadn't in years.

It should have felt like relief. Instead, her chest tightened with something that felt a lot like loss.

"What are you doing, Layla?" she muttered, tossing the phone onto her bed.

Her head screamed at her to cut it off before it became another mistake. But her heart whispered of something rare, something she hadn't dared to hope for in a long time.

Hope. That was the problem. Liam had planted it in her, watered it with every word, every call, every reckless smile. And now, even when she tried to pull away, it grew stubbornly inside her.

The phone buzzed again. Another message from him.

Liam [8:47 AM]:

Morning, trouble. Don't tell me you've forgotten me already?

Layla's lips curved into a smile she didn't want to admit was there.

Layla sat cross-legged on her bed, staring at Liam's good-morning text. For once, she didn't reply right away. Instead, her fingers danced nervously across the screen, deleting and rewriting until she finally pressed send.

Layla [9:02 AM]:

Liam, about what you said yesterday… about loving me.

The typing dots appeared instantly. Then stopped. Then appeared again.

Liam [9:03 AM]:

Yeah?

Her pulse quickened. She forced herself to type the words she had rehearsed in her head all night.

Layla [9:04 AM]:

What happens if I say no? If I tell you I can't… or don't want to feel the same?

Seconds ticked by like hours before his reply arrived.

Liam [9:05 AM]:

Then I'll respect it. I won't force anything. But I won't pretend it wouldn't hurt.

Her throat tightened. She pressed her lips together and quickly sent the next question before she could lose her nerve.

Layla [9:06 AM]:

And what happens if I say yes? If I give you a chance?

This time, the dots stayed longer, as if he was carefully choosing every word.

Liam [9:08 AM]:

Then I'll do everything I can to prove you didn't make a mistake. I'll make sure "yes" feels like the best decision you ever made.

Layla swallowed hard, her chest caught between a storm of fear and the warmth of possibility. She dropped the phone on her lap, staring at it like it had just rewritten her world.

For the first time, the choice no longer felt like a distant idea. It was right there, demanding an answer.

And she wasn't sure which scared her more—saying no, or daring to say yes.

Forgetfully, Layla was running late for work. She had to rush herself to get dressed and zoomed off to work.

By midday, Layla's desk was drowning in files, her phone buzzing silently at the corner. Meetings piled on meetings, her boss snapping deadlines across the office. She barely had time to breathe, let alone check Liam's chat.

It wasn't until late afternoon, when she finally reached for her phone, that she noticed the unread messages.

Liam [10:15 AM]:

I guess someone's buried in work today.

Liam [12:03 PM]:

Don't worry about replying. Just breathe. I hope your day isn't being too cruel to you.

Liam [2:20 PM]:

Drink water. Don't roll your eyes—I know you forget sometimes.

Liam [4:10 PM]:

Still quiet. Okay, trouble. Handle your world. I'll wait for mine to get a reply later.

No trace of irritation. No guilt-tripping. Just patience wrapped in small, thoughtful nudges.

For reasons she couldn't explain, tears stung her eyes. Every other man in her past had made her feel guilty for not being instantly available, as if her time belonged to them. Liam? He gave her space, but not silence. Care, but never pressure.

Finally, as the office lights dimmed and her colleagues trickled out, she typed with trembling fingers:

Layla [6:47 PM]:

I saw your messages. Sorry I couldn't reply earlier. Today was… chaos.

The reply came instantly.

Liam [6:47 PM]:

And yet you survived. Proud of you, trouble.

Her chest tightened, and before she could stop herself, she wrote what she had been feeling all day.

Layla [6:49 PM]:

You're the first person who's ever handled me like this… without making me feel guilty. Thank you, Liam.

The dots appeared. Disappeared. Then appeared again.

Liam [6:50 PM]:

Maybe it's because you're worth the patience.

Layla bit her lip, staring at those words. Something dangerous and tender was growing, and for once, she wasn't sure she wanted to stop it.

By the time Layla finally got home, showered, and collapsed into bed, she felt like the day had drained every ounce of energy from her. But the moment she unlocked her phone, Liam's chat was there waiting, like a soft hand reaching out.

Liam [9:18 PM]:

So, workaholic… did you at least eat something?

Layla [9:20 PM]:

Barely. I'm too tired to even think about food.

Liam [9:21 PM]:

Hmm. If I was there, I'd have made you something. Or better yet… given you a massage until you forgot the stress.

Layla's eyes widened, heat creeping up her neck. She hesitated, then typed.

Layla [9:23 PM]:

A massage? You?

Liam [9:24 PM]:

Yes, me. You think I only know how to type sweet messages? My hands are good at more than one thing, trouble.

She bit her lip, caught between laughter and curiosity.

Layla [9:25 PM]:

And what if I don't trust you enough to let you try?

Liam [9:26 PM]:

Then I'll wait until you do. But believe me, one day you'll give in—and you'll see I wasn't exaggerating.

Her heart pounded at his confidence. He wasn't rushing her, yet he slipped the idea into her mind so easily, like planting a seed that would only grow with time.

Layla [9:28 PM]:

You're unbelievable.

Liam [9:29 PM]:

Unbelievably patient. And maybe a little dangerously good for you.

She laughed, shaking her head, but the truth was undeniable: his words lingered. The thought of his hands easing the tension from her shoulders, his voice teasing at her ear—it all slipped into her imagination before she could stop it.

And for the first time in a long while, she didn't fight the image away.

After their playful back-and-forth, Layla placed her phone face down on the pillow. She could still feel the warmth of Liam's words vibrating inside her chest, like an echo she couldn't silence.

Worth the patience.

One day you'll give in.

Maybe a little dangerously good for you.

Her lips curved in a helpless smile. She hated to admit it—even to herself—but the truth was already knocking hard: she was falling in love with Liam. Every careful word, every moment of restraint, every playful tease… he was slipping past her defenses without even trying.

But she couldn't tell him. Not yet. The fear of being wrong again, of opening her heart only to watch it shatter, was still too heavy.

So instead, she called Zara.

Her best friend picked up after the second ring, sounding half-asleep. "Girl, it's past midnight. This better be good."

Layla laughed softly. "It is… or maybe it's dangerous."

Zara sat up immediately, her voice sharp with interest. "Dangerous? Okay, spill."

Layla bit her lip, her heart racing. "You know how today was crazy at work? I didn't reply to Liam for hours. Anyone else would've sulked or made me feel guilty. But him? He was patient. Sent me little reminders to take care of myself. No anger. No pressure. Just… care."

There was silence, then Zara's knowing chuckle. "And you loved it, didn't you?"

Layla's voice broke into a whisper. "I think I'm… falling, Zara. I don't want to, but I can't help it. He's different."

Zara smiled through the phone, her tone soft but edged with excitement. "Then maybe, for once, different is exactly what you need."

For a moment, Layla felt lighter—until her phone buzzed with another incoming call. She frowned when she saw the name. Mariam.

"Pick it up," Zara urged. "I'll wait."

Layla switched lines. "Hello, sis?"

Mariam's voice was sharp, almost accusing. "Layla, I've been thinking. You sound… distracted these days. Don't tell me it's about that Liam again."

Layla froze, her silence giving her away.

Mariam sighed heavily. "I knew it. Listen, Layla. Don't let your heart fool you. You've been through enough. Men like him—rich, smooth talkers—they always say the right things. But when it matters most, they vanish. I don't want you crying into my arms again."

Layla swallowed hard, the ache of Zara's encouragement clashing violently with Mariam's warning.

"I just… I don't know," she whispered.

"Then listen to me," Mariam pressed. "Don't fall too fast. Don't let him see how much you care. Protect yourself. Please."

When the call ended, Layla lay in the dark, torn in two. Between Zara's hope and Mariam's fear, her heart felt like a battlefield.

And yet, Liam's words still lingered, soft and stubborn in her mind: Maybe you're worth the patience.
