Chapter 12 - Protecting the Flame I

Lin Tian's sword whistled through the night air as he finished another set of forms, sweat glistening under the pale moonlight. Yet his mind wasn't on his training.

It was on the shadow.

The clash in the bamboo grove replayed over and over those crimson eyes, the weapon of black qi, the mocking laugh that refused to leave his ears.

Not a beast… not a demon. A man. Someone within the sect itself. But who?

A soft voice broke his thoughts.

"Senior Brother Lin?"

Lin Tian turned, startled. Xiao Yue stood at the entrance of the yard, her hands clasped nervously. She wore her usual sky-blue robe, carrying a small basket of herbs.

"I… heard about Zhao Wen and the others," she said quietly. "Everyone is frightened. But I know you… you'll protect us, won't you?"

Lin Tian froze. Xiao Yue's trust was pure, almost blinding. Of all the sect, she was one of the few who never looked at him with suspicion or disdain.

"Yes," he said firmly, though inside, unease stirred. "I'll protect you. No matter what."

His system chimed softly, as though affirming his vow:

[Side Quest: Protect Xiao Yue from the Predator.]

Reward: +200 EXP, Bond Strength increased.]

[Failure: ???]

The triple question mark sent a chill down Lin Tian's spine.

---

That night, Lin Tian walked Xiao Yue back to her quarters, his senses stretched wide. Every rustle of leaves, every flicker of shadow made his hand twitch toward his sword.

"Senior Brother," Xiao Yue said suddenly, glancing up at him, "you don't need to worry so much. You've always carried so much weight on your shoulders. Even if the sect doesn't see it… I do."

Her smile was small, gentle but to Lin Tian, it was a fragile flame in the endless dark.

Far above, perched silently on the tiled roof, Ye Feng watched. Crimson eyes glowed faintly as he studied the pair.

"Perfect," he whispered, his grin cruel.

"Show me more, Lin Tian. Show me just how far you'll go to protect her… before I snuff out that little flame."

His shadow melted into the night, leaving only silence.

The night was silent, save for the whisper of the wind brushing against the tiled roofs.

From the shadows, Ye Feng prowled. His form blended into the darkness, his steps soundless, his presence a phantom.

Below, Xiao Yue sat cross-legged within her modest quarters, quietly refining herbs under the flicker of a lantern. The flame painted her features in gold, innocence etched into every line of her face.

Ye Feng's crimson eyes narrowed, drinking in the sight."So fragile… so unaware. And yet, the little flame dares to warm Lin Tian's frozen heart."

A smirk tugged at his lips. "How delightful it will be to snuff it out."

But before he could move closer, his senses sharpened.

A faint ripple of qi, deliberate yet subtle, laced the courtyard around Xiao Yue's room.

Ye Feng's gaze flicked to the ground faint talisman papers tucked under loose stones, threads of light hidden in plain sight.

He chuckled darkly."Clever mouse… you laid snares around her den. As expected."

Lin Tian had woven a web of protective arrays. They were crude compared to Ye Feng's own mastery of darkness, but effective enough to sound an alarm if breached.

From a nearby rooftop, Ye Feng crouched low, eyes glinting with cruel amusement.

"This is what makes it fun," he murmured. "A flame guarded by a desperate protector. If I strike recklessly, I reveal myself. If I wait, I can watch him break piece by piece."

He traced a finger along the hilt of Shadow Fang, the weapon vibrating hungrily. The blade yearned for blood, whispering its demand into his mind.

"Patience," Ye Feng whispered, stroking it like a loyal beast. "The feast will come. But before I devour her… I'll drive him mad with fear."

Lin Tian jolted awake in the dead of night, sword already in hand.

His heart pounded, qi flaring instinctively as his eyes swept the room. Nothing stirred. The only sound was the faint chirping of insects.

Yet the feeling lingered. A heavy pressure in the air, like unseen fangs brushing against his throat.

He's here.

Without hesitation, Lin Tian dashed toward Xiao Yue's quarters. His arrays glowed faintly in the moonlight, untouched. Yet as he approached, Xiao Yue was already at the doorway, clutching her robe tightly.

"Senior Brother… I…" Her voice trembled. "I felt something. Cold, watching me. Like eyes in the dark."

Lin Tian's gaze hardened. He quickly checked the perimeter, eyes scanning each talisman, each stone, each thread of spiritual light. Everything was intact.

But the qi in the air… was wrong. Distorted, faint traces of corruption brushed against his senses before fading away.

He was here. Watching.

"Don't leave your quarters alone," Lin Tian ordered firmly. "If you feel it again, call my name through your qi. I'll come at once."

Xiao Yue hesitated, then nodded, though her hands still trembled.

Back in his own courtyard, Lin Tian sat cross-legged, forcing his thoughts into order.

His system chimed with chilling precision:

[Warning: Predator has entered the perimeter.]

[System Scan: Traces detected – Shadow Qi.]

[Analysis: The Predator is deliberately testing your vigilance.]

Lin Tian's jaw tightened."So that's your game… circling me, waiting for me to slip."

The system responded coldly:

[Side Quest Updated: Protect Xiao Yue.]

New Condition: Predator has begun psychological warfare.]

Failure Consequence: Permanent Bond Loss.]

Lin Tian's grip tightened on his sword. He had lived his whole life under suspicion, scorned by elders, mocked by peers. But Xiao Yue's trust was the one fragile flame he couldn't allow to be extinguished.

"Come then," he muttered, eyes burning with determination. "I'll be waiting for you in the dark."

High above on a distant cliff, Ye Feng reclined lazily, crimson eyes glowing with laughter.

"Ah… you really do care, don't you, Lin Tian? Good. That makes this game worth playing."

His shadow dissolved into the night once more, leaving the tension to fester.

The moon hung high, cold and silver, as Lin Tian drew a fresh talisman across the ground. Sweat rolled down his brow, but his strokes remained steady, each brush of ink infused with sword intent.

Around Xiao Yue's quarters, layers of new formations bloomed—interlocking circles, reinforced barriers, and arrays woven with threads of his qi.

"This time," he murmured, "if you come close, I'll make you reveal yourself."

The system chimed approvingly:

[New Array Constructed: Sword-Light Barrier.]

[Effect: Reacts violently against corrupted qi. Duration – 3 nights.]

[Side Quest Progress: Counter the Predator – 20%]

But even as the system text glowed, Lin Tian's eyes flickered with doubt.

No matter how many walls I build, he's still circling. Still watching. What if he doesn't strike? What if he waits until I falter?

Xiao Yue peeked from her window, worry written across her delicate face."Senior Brother… you haven't rested since last night. You're pushing yourself too hard."

Lin Tian shook his head, gaze never leaving the glowing talismans."If I falter, even for a moment, he'll strike. I can't let that happen."

She bit her lip, hesitating, before softly saying:"…Then I'll stay awake too. At least let me share some of the burden."

Lin Tian turned, startled, but the

determination in her eyes mirrored his own. For a brief moment, warmth flickered in the endless dark.

And high above, in the shadows of a nearby pine tree, Ye Feng crouched silently, his crimson eyes gleaming with wicked amusement.

"Oh, Lin Tian," he whispered, almost tenderly. "You build your fortress around her flame, thinking walls will keep me out. But tell me… what happens when the fortress itself becomes the coffin?"

A faint twist of shadow qi slid across the ground, brushing against the edge of Lin Tian's newest array. The talisman flared violently—then sputtered and died, burned out like a candle in the wind.

Lin Tian's head snapped up, eyes blazing.

"Show yourself!"

But the night answered only with silence.

Ye Feng's laughter echoed faintly, carried by the wind.

The night stretched long.

Lin Tian sat rigid, sword across his knees, eyes locked on the courtyard. Every flicker of the lantern, every shifting shadow on the wall, set his senses on edge.

The arrays glowed faintly, humming with power. Yet each time he checked them, small distortions appeared. A rune slightly smudged. A talisman corner curling as though touched by unseen fingers.

Again? His chest tightened. I redrew these myself. I checked them a dozen times.

The system chimed, cold and clinical:

[Warning: Array Stability Dropping.]

[Cause: Unknown interference.]

Lin Tian's grip on his sword tightened until his knuckles turned white."He's toying with me…"

From inside her quarters, Xiao Yue's voice broke the silence."Senior Brother…? Are you there?"

"Yes," Lin Tian answered instantly. His tone was steady, but his eyes never stopped scanning the night.

Xiao Yue hesitated, then whispered:"I thought I heard someone… calling my name."

Lin Tian's blood ran cold. He surged to his feet, qi flooding his sword. He slashed outward—yet the blade cut only empty air.

No voice. No intruder. Nothing but the mocking echo of Xiao Yue's trembling words.

High above, unseen, Ye Feng leaned casually against a tree trunk, lips curled in a lazy grin. Shadow Fang pulsed faintly in his hand, whispering in a tongue only he could hear.

"They hear me now," Ye Feng murmured.

"The girl's ears, the boy's heart… both trembling, both fraying. Good. Very good."

His crimson gaze fixed on Lin Tian's tense figure."Keep burning, little protector. The longer you fight the dark, the sooner it will consume you."

With a ripple, he melted into the night once more.
