"Whew, that was so close."I said as we entered my office. "You don't say. I wonder what would have happened if he showed up in his office before me." I shuddered in retrospect after what Cas had said. That would have been great disaster.
"So, I'm guessing you and Leonard's date didn't go well." Caught off guard,my knee hit the edge of my table inflicting pain there. Ouch,so much for avoiding and stalling this conversation.
I couldn't help but feel sad and downcast all over again remembering what had happened yesternight.
"What happened?Did he reject you?" Cas asked with worry plastered on her face. She walked towards me then hugged me. My already hurting heart hurt more. The tears I had been trying so hard to hold back when Cas reminded me of last time finally poured out.
"It's okay Chris. Everything is going to be alright. Come sit down and pour your heart out. Cry everything out. I'm here for you. " She brought me to the couch near the wall and sat me down. She rubbed my back in a circular motion trying to calm me down but no matter how hard I tried,the tears wouldn't stop flowing. I covered my face with my hands and continued weeping.
Minutes had passed and I finally calmed down. All that was left of me were sniffing and some spasms of my diaphragm.
"Are you okay now?" I nodded and she faintly smiled.
"So what happened?Did he do or say something to you? Was that the reason you were stammering back then?" So she noticed. With a sign escaping my lips,I narrated all that happened last night to her. Nothing added nor deducted.
"All this while,he had a girlfriend? But that's impossible." Trust me it is.
"How come we never knew?" She asked with perplexity and flabbergastation written on her face.
"I'm as shocked as you are." I whispered between my sobs. He having a girlfriend was not one of the million case scenarios I imagined would have happened that would have made the date inauspicious. I had prepared for a lot of things and was ready to accept anything but not this. He having a girlfriend said a lot of things. One;he was straight and for someone like him to have a girlfriend, that only meant he was serious about whoever this lucky woman was and marriage was in consideration. They might be engaged by now. My heart ached more thinking about all these but I didn't cry. Honestly,I couldn't even. My eyes felt swollen and my head had began aching.
"Well we would have known sonner or later. It's good we got to know now so you can move on. Who knows, there might be someone there waiting for you to end this obsession over Leonard."she encouraged and I shook my head.
"I don't think I can move on or stop loving Leonard. It has been years since I gave my heart to him. I'm not sure I can take it back. "
"Hey, don't say that."she criticized with feigned anger on her face.
"I'm not saying you should move on right this instant as that's difficult and not impossible but you would have to give it try. You have to try that dating app I recommended. Who knows,you might end up lucky and find your love. You have to stop fussing over Leonard Hills,after all, there are many fishes in the sea."
"You are right, but it's not easy as it sounds Cas. No matter how hard you try to understand,you won't as you've never been in my situation before."
"Hey,are trying to make me feel bad right now. I'm comforting you remember? And infact unlike you, I'm optimistic and always look on the bright side of everything.Why don't you stop being pessimistic for once and see if a good sign will appear right behind this door."
*Knocking of the door.*
Our heads flew to the door with shock painted on our faces.
"Since when did you start making powerful manifestations?"I whispered to her.
"I've told you countless times yet you refuse to believe. It's about time you witnessed it for yourself.The great things I can do."I rolled my eyes with what she said. "Bet me, your man is behind that door."She proclaimed and I don't know, but a teeny-weeny part of me wanted to believe in what she said and hope that it was now time.
The person knocked again.I looked at Cas signaling her to do something.
"Bitch, the person came for you not me. Plus we are in your office,you should do something. I am not always going to be with you to tell you what to do when things like this happen.You have to stand up for yourself." She advised which made me feel a little embarrassed.
The person knocked for the third time and finally,I spoke out.
"Who is it?" Anticipation and suspense made their way into my heart as I waited for whoever was behind the door to respond.
"It's me,Dr.Conner."
Disappointment and regret surfaced on my face. I turned to Cas and realized she was trying hard not to burst into laughter. Yeah,this is what I get for getting my hopes up and believing in stupid things you say. "What?you didn't take what I said seriously did you. You are that desperate huh?"she said,her body shaking in silent laughter.
"May I enter?"Dr.Conner asked which made me frown. What did he want again? I thought I had made myself clear when I said I valued professionalism.
"Sorry,yeah. Please do come in." I answered politely.
"Wait, what about your face. You look horrible after that session of tears ."Cas alerted. Shoot,he was going to see me like this, again.At this point, it was getting concerningly suspicious.
"Wait, don't enter now."I said as quickly as I could. The door that was about to open stationed and I let out a sigh of relief. Now what should I do? An invisible light bulb shining on my head,I remembered the sunglasses Dr.Conner had given to me . I rushed to my desk and pulling out the upper drawer,I took the pair of shades and quickly wore them.
"Not bad for acclimatizing."She praised, nodding her head.
"But where the hell did you get that from?" She asked pointing the sunglasses. "I don't remember you having something like this in your possession. The last shopping we went,I saw everything that you bought and I'm one hundred percent sure that wasn't included in the stuff you purchased."She pointed out.
"Okay, it's giving creepy but yes it's not mine. It belongs to your assistant behind the door. Speaking of that, there is something I have to tell you with regards to him and what happened last night. " New found curiosity shone in her eyes after hearing what I said.
"What is it? Was he smoking?Did you see him on his way to a brothel or something?"
"Jeez, not at all. Do you want something dirty on him or what? It's not related to any of that at all. Wait,are you planning to get rid of him?"I asked when that realization dawned on me.
"Of course, that man has been a thorn in my flesh from the very day he set his foot in this hospital and became my assistant."
"Can you blame him? For having an irresponsible boss like you."
"Excuse me,are you defending him instead of your best friend?" She asked, invisible smoke puffing out from her ears and nose. I quickly shook my head as I didn't want to experience what was to come next when she started getting irritated liked this.
"It's not like that at all. I'm just saying he thinks you're making his work difficult therefore he would do same to you." I explained which successfully cleared the tension.
"Well,this hospital wasn't going to contain the two of us. One was definitely going to leave. And we both know who that person was going to be."she threatened with that expression that antagonists had when they were plotting evil for their protagonist.
"Sheesh, I'm getting chills"I said as I jokingly surrounded myself with my arms as if I was feeling cold.
