Chapter 17 - EPISODE 16

Eyes in the Dark

That night, Amara could barely sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the file in Lorenzo's study—her name, her face, her past. He knew everything.

But why hadn't he told her?

By morning, she decided to act normal. If Lorenzo suspected she had seen the file, she wasn't sure what he'd do. So she smiled, played with Isabella, and kept her voice steady. But her mind was restless, searching for patterns in every look, every word, every silence from him.

At breakfast, Lorenzo sat at the head of the table, sipping his espresso. His eyes lingered on her a little longer than usual. She tried to look away, but his voice cut through the quiet.

"You look tired."

Amara forced a small smile. "Isabella wanted me to read two stories before bed. She wouldn't let me stop."

Lorenzo's gaze sharpened, as if he didn't believe her, but he said nothing more.

Later that day, while walking with Isabella through the garden, Amara noticed something odd. A man stood beyond the gates, half-hidden in the trees. He wasn't one of Lorenzo's guards. His stare was fixed on her.

Her chest tightened. Marco's men.

She quickly ushered Isabella inside, but her mind spiraled. The walls of the mansion were beginning to feel less like protection and more like a prison.

That evening, as she tucked Isabella in, she heard footsteps in the hall. Heavy, deliberate. She opened the door slightly and froze.

It was Matteo again. He stood outside, speaking in low tones on his phone.

"Yes. She's here. No, she doesn't know yet. The boss is keeping it quiet."

Amara's breath caught. Doesn't know what?

She pulled the door shut and pressed her forehead against it, her hands trembling.

It was becoming clear—Lorenzo and his men weren't just hiding something from her. They were hiding her.

And the worst part? She didn't know if Lorenzo was protecting her… or using her for something far more dangerous.

🔥 Suspense is getting tighter: she saw Marco's man watching her, Matteo's words confirm secrets, and her trust in Lorenzo is shaking.
