Chapter 15: Simulation: Marcus Reed, Part 2
[HYDRA Cell Base – Night – Simulation, Age 22, Year 5]
The choice was made, and the consequences followed. Adam, as Marcus Reed, had chosen to sabotage the cell, and the destruction was glorious. Two more years had passed, and his infiltration skills had grown exponentially. He was a master of his craft, a shadow made of logic and code.
[IN THE FIFTH YEAR, YOU SABOTAGE AGENT BLAKE'S CELL, USING BASIC TACTICAL INFILTRATION. YOU UNLOCK ADVANCED TACTICAL INFILTRATION.]
He was standing in the shadows of Agent Blake's office. Blake, a greasy, portly man, was screaming into his comms. "You're finished, Reed!" he shrieked. Adam chuckled to himself. Finished? He was just getting started. He sent a small, harmless signal into the room, causing a fake Stark signal to blare from Blake's monitor. The monitor flashed STARK INDUSTRIES INCOMING TRANSMISSION, and Blake, startled, knocked over a cup of coffee and sent his monitor crashing to the floor.
"Advanced? I'm a tech ninja!" Adam said to himself, melting into the shadows and slipping out of the room.
"Good move, Reed," Tony said on the comms, a note of admiration in his voice. "You're getting better."
"Move? I'm a shadow!" Adam said, a grin on his face.
"Blake's tough. I'm tougher," he thought. This simulation was a real challenge, and he was rising to the occasion.
[Stark Industries Lab – Morning – Simulation, Age 25, Year 8]
Three years later, Adam was 25. He had spent his time honing his Advanced Tactical Infiltration skill, and he was getting close to mastery. The system's prompt was proof of his success.
[IN THE EIGHTH YEAR, YOU TRAIN WITH TONY, MASTERING ADVANCED TACTICAL INFILTRATION. STARK PROMOTES YOU.]
[PROGRESS: ADVANCED TACTICAL INFILTRATION AT 50%.]
"50%? I'm invisible!" he thought, a rush of pure joy flooding through him. He was in the lab, and Tony was trying to explain something to him. But Adam, in his excitement, sent a small, uncontrolled electric current through a stack of circuits, causing them to spark and clatter to the ground with a mess of wires.
"Control it, Reed," Tony said, a hint of desperation in his voice. "You're a tech ghost, not a poltergeist."
"Control? I'm a ghost!" Adam laughed, his hands already in his pockets to prevent further chaos.
The technician, a new hire, looked at Adam with a mixture of fear and confusion. "He's a disaster!"
"Disaster with style!" Adam corrected, striking a dramatic pose.
"Stark's impressed. Time to shine," he thought. This promotion meant new responsibilities, bigger missions.
[HYDRA Stronghold – Afternoon – Simulation, Age 30, Year 13]
Five years had passed. Adam was now 30. He was at the peak of his power in this simulation. He had just destroyed a HYDRA cell, a job he had done with ruthless efficiency. His skills were a finely honed weapon.
[IN THE THIRTEENTH YEAR, YOU DESTROY A HYDRA CELL, USING ADVANCED TACTICAL INFILTRATION. YOU FACE A CHOICE: EXPOSE OR DESTROY ANOTHER CELL.]
[CHOICE: EXPOSE OR DESTROY CELL.]
He had a choice to make. Exposing a cell would bring in SHIELD, a slower, more deliberate process. Destroying it would be quick, effective, and brutal.
"Destroy. Let's end 'em!" he said, the words echoing in the empty, silent hallway. This was his path. The path of a vigilante, not a bureaucrat.
Tony's voice was a low murmur on the comms. "Good call, Reed. This one's too hot for a simple exposure."
"Good? I'm epic!" Adam said, his fingers already moving to prepare for the final mission. He heard an operative on the comms.
"Someone's here!" the operative whispered, his voice laced with fear. Adam had been so quiet, so undetectable, he was an urban legend in this city.
"Just a shadow!" Adam whispered into his comm.
Tony's voice was a low hum. "Stay sharp."
"Destroying feels right," he thought. He had made his choice.
[HYDRA Cell Base – Evening – Simulation, Age 35, Year 18]
Five more years had passed. Adam was 35. He had destroyed the HYDRA cell, and the simulation was about to ramp up. The system's prompt was a promise of what was to come.
[IN THE EIGHTEENTH YEAR, YOU DESTROY THE HYDRA CELL, REFINING ADVANCED TACTICAL INFILTRATION. A LARGER THREAT EMERGES.]
[PROGRESS: ADVANCED TACTICAL INFILTRATION AT 70%.]
"70%? I'm an infiltration legend!" he thought, a sense of pure exhilaration coursing through him. He was at a HYDRA base, a massive fortress of a building. He sent a fake alert through the network, and a drone in the main lobby began to spin like a top, its lights flashing wildly.
"Intruder!" an operative shouted, pointing at the spinning drone.
"Intruder with style!" Adam said, a low laugh in his voice. He was on top of the world.
Tony's voice was filled with a rare note of genuine awe. "Nice work, Reed. I don't know how you do it."
"Work? I'm invisible!" Adam said, a grin on his face.
A new voice, cold and sterile, came through on the comms. "Bigger threats are coming," the agent said. "You've been playing with the small fish."
"More threats? I'm ready," Adam thought, his gaze fixed on the fortress. He was ready for the big leagues. He was ready for the next phase.
