Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Ascending the Red Line

Bege didn't cause any more trouble.

He didn't take the opportunity to kidnap another queen or princess during this time.

After transferring between several passenger ships, the two parties met on one vessel, and Dier's group of four successfully entered Bege's Body Space.

The space here was enormous, complete with bedrooms, a kitchen, shower facilities—all the necessary amenities.

Perona was running around clutching her teddy bear, having been cooped up on the ship for days.

Hina followed Perona to ensure the little girl wouldn't come into contact with anything dangerous.

Robin was reading in the study, while Dier, having nothing better to do, buried himself in the kitchen wreaking havoc with the food.

By evening.

Robin prepared a simple dinner.

Bege's figure emerged from the floor—this was his consciousness projection, which could also eat to replenish energy.

His table manners were exceptionally refined and formal: napkin, knife and fork, red wine—nothing was missing.

After swallowing a piece of steak, he pulled out a cigar, ready to take a puff.

Pfft~

The flip-top lighter had just ignited when a water droplet shot by Dier extinguished it instantly.

"There's a child present. Hold off for a while."

Glancing at Perona's innocent expression at the table, Bege reluctantly put away his cigar and took a sip of red wine instead.

"We'll arrive at West Red Port tomorrow morning. From there, we can take an elevator up to Mary Geoise."

"You're a mafia boss though. Won't your identity be a problem?"

Dier stuffed a piece of ham into his mouth and mumbled:

"Could someone recognize you and have you arrested or something?"

Bege shook his head and explained:

"There is indeed a Marine base stationed at West Red Port;

But I'm mafia. Unless there's an order from the World Government, the Marines generally don't interfere with land affairs."

Dier thought about it and realized this seemed true.

In the future, Smoker would guard Loguetown, letting no Pirate escape, yet he never touched Bartolomeo, the mafia boss.

"As for other departments, just pay some money. Unless you're a notorious major criminal, they'll turn a blind eye."

Dier nodded in understanding. Mary Geoise's defenses were worryingly lax—Fisher Tiger alone had once freed a large number of slaves single-handedly, let alone its subordinate ports.

He chewed and swallowed a piece of meat with bone still attached, then placed both hands on the table and said with grave seriousness:

"I'd like to ask another favor!"

"What?"

"Help me kill someone—the mafia boss of Poco Island, Amy."

Hearing this, Bege frowned in contemplation, searching his memory for the name Amy.

Due to his personal hobby of assassinating bosses, he knew the names of most notable mafia leaders.

Yet the name Amy drew a complete blank.

"Don't bother thinking. It's just a small-time boss from a nowhere place."

Dier wiped his mouth with a napkin and chuckled:

"Right now it's uncertain whether the guy's even alive or dead, so I'll trouble you to investigate;

If he's already dead, forget it. If he's alive, kill him—and remember to fire a few extra shots to make it painful."

This only deepened Bege's confusion. Though their acquaintance was brief, he could clearly tell Dier wasn't bloodthirsty;

Yet now he specifically requested making the death painful.

"This person wronged you?"

"Hmm... that would require going way back."

Dier didn't avoid talking about his past—after all, anyone who wanted to investigate could easily trace it back to Poco Island.

Just ask anyone on the island, and they'll tell you about the child who survived on charity before jumping into the sea years ago.

"My parents died when I was three. I only survived thanks to the villagers' help. By age ten, that Amy took a liking to me and planned to take me to his villa in town to keep me as a pet. He was known as the island's great philanthropist, famous for adopting young boys—though most didn't live long. I'd heard of him, so when he sent his men to capture me from the village, I jumped straight into the sea. After drifting who knows how long, I met Robin and began my life as a pirate."

The dining table fell silent, save for Perona's chewing sounds.

Hina and Bege couldn't help but show pity in their expressions. Both came from privileged backgrounds—Hina wore pretty dresses as a child with pets by her side, while Bege played with pistols as toys. The worst hardship they'd ever faced was probably the revolting taste of Devil Fruits.

Noticing their gazes, Dier shrugged helplessly. "Don't look at me like that. It doesn't bother me." And it truly didn't. The original owner's soul left no lingering resentment or unwillingness—it affected him not at all. The memories in his mind were just like a long animation to him; he could empathize, but never truly immerse himself. Getting Bege to kill Amy was merely a convenient favor.

"I get you, brother," Bege said, stepping forward to pat his shoulder.

Dier: "..."

You get nothing!

"Out, out. Go back to your main body and sleep. Wake us when we reach the North Sea tomorrow."

Bege nodded, gave his shoulder another pat, then transferred his consciousness back to his main body.

Hina opened her mouth to say something, but Dier stuffed a piece of bread into it.

"You shut up too. Finish eating, take a bath, then go to sleep."

...

The next morning.

The passenger ship Bege was on arrived at West Red Port.

The naming of this port was incredibly simple.

The two ports in the Grand Line were both called Red Ports, where one could take the Bubble Elevator up to Mary Geoise.

Thus, this port in the West Sea was named West Red Port.

"Elephant Squid! Fresh from the South Sea!"

"Buns, buns! Grand Buns from the Grand Line!"

"Buying ships! Fair prices guaranteed!"

The chaotic cries of vendors filled the air as citizens peddled their specialties.

Bege ignored them all, silently disembarking and heading toward the elevators.

The prices of these goods were far from cheap, and selling a ship here meant getting fleeced several times over.

After all, ships couldn't cross the Red Line—those who sailed their own vessels here had no choice but to sell them on the spot.

Fortunately, he was on a passenger ship and didn't have that problem.

He continued forward until he reached the elevator entrance.

Everywhere stood soldiers clad in full armor and Marines draped in Justice cloaks, all guarding the six elevators.

Five of them corresponded to the East Sea, South Sea, North Sea, Grand Line, and New World respectively.

The sixth was reserved for royalty, used by nobles attending the World Conference.

At this time, Vegapunk had yet to invent the technology to embed Sea Stone into warship hulls, making the Calm Belt an impassable zone for most.

The royal families of the Four Seas could neither risk crossing the Calm Belt nor attempt to traverse Reverse Mountain, leaving them no choice but to board Mary Geoise from this port to attend the once-every-four-years World Conference.

After paying a fee, Bege arrived before the elevator corresponding to the North Blue and waited.

Before long, an open-air semicircular elevator descended, crowded with people and goods from other seas.

Once this group had cleared out, it was Bege's turn along with the others.

Creak~

The surrounding ropes tensed, pulling the elevator upward.

As the cold wind blew, Bege instinctively tightened his coat around himself.
