Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Island of Diers

"I see two Diers fighting over prey."

Dier: ?

"To be precise, it's Long-bearded Baldy and Hunter Deal fighting over a bear."

Robin closed her eyes tightly and whispered in explanation:

"We're still not sure whether 'Dier' is a name or a title here."

"Who's there?!"

"Ah!"

Robin let out a low cry of pain—the two arms she had created were pierced, and in her distress, the disguises on her and Dier's faces dissipated involuntarily.

Whoosh!

An arrow whistled through the air, striking the tree behind the three of them.

The force was so strong it pierced straight through the trunk.

A flicker of gravity passed through Dier's eyes—this was no ordinary person's doing.

He stepped forward, raising his hands to shield Robin and Hina behind him, his gaze fixed ahead as he called out loudly:

"We're survivors! We just came from the beach and only came here looking for food!"

Not only did the other party know the terrain well, but they also carried a bow—

Running was out of the question. He could only hope they wouldn't shoot another arrow.

His Hypnosis ability only worked when making eye contact.

"If you don't believe me, I can take you to the beach—our ship is still stranded there!"

Rustle—

A tall man in gray cloth approached cautiously, his longbow drawn and ready to strike at any moment.

"Oh, just a bunch of kids."

After getting a clear look at them, the tall man exhaled in relief, offering an awkward smile:

"Sorry, sorry. We don't get many outsiders here. Didn't scare you, did I?"

The cross-shaped scar on his left cheek twisted like an ugly centipede as the corner of his mouth lifted.

Hina couldn't help but take half a step back, hiding behind Dier.

Not long ago, she had still been a sheltered young lady—she'd never seen someone with such a terrifying appearance.

The tall man noticed her reaction but said nothing, turning instead to shout toward his original position:

"Long-bearded Baldy! Today's your lucky day—the bear's yours. But you're leaving the deer behind."

The other man, knowing he was in the wrong, left the deer he'd caught earlier and dragged the black bear away.

Before long, a campfire was lit, and the four of them sat around it.

As the tall man prepared the venison, he questioned the trio about their origins.

Upon hearing that a Black Manatee had appeared and wrecked their ship, he suddenly understood:

"So that monster ran off to your side, huh? No wonder Fisher couldn't find it."

"Wait—that manatee came from here?"

Dier quickly waved his hands to interrupt. There were just too many strange things about that statement.

"And who is this 'Fisher' you mentioned?"

"Three days ago, a rainbow-colored mist suddenly appeared over the nearby sea. That monster came out of it."

The tall man placed the deer leg over the fire and explained:

"As for Fisher, well, he's Fisher.

I'm the best hunter on the island, so I'm Hunter Deal. Fisher is naturally the best fisherman here."

"W-Wait a second—"

Dier's mouth fell open as a possibility dawned on him.

"Don't tell me... everyone on this island is named Dier?"

"Of course!"

The hunter nodded as if it were the most natural thing.

"There's Soldier, Weaver, Farmer, Brewer..."

The real Dier gradually became dazed, feeling for the first time that his name was as common as Zhang Wei.

As the hunter recounted his story, he clarified the naming rules here.

The island was full of Dier.

However, there were also different ranks.

The first rank included professions.

For example, Hunter Dier and Fisher Dier, who were the strongest among hunters and fishers, respectively.

The second rank combined characteristics with professions.

For instance, Scarred Hunter Dier and Big-armed Fisher Dier.

The third rank combined characteristics with characteristics and then a profession.

The one who had been chased away earlier, Long-bearded Baldy Dier, should have the full name of Long-bearded Bald Hunter Dier.

Since that was too long, they would generally just call them by their characteristics.

The fourth rank, the lowest among adults, was a combination of a number and a profession.

For example, Hunter No. 386.

The fifth rank belonged to the elderly and children, using numbers with "little" or "old."

Little No. 784, Old No. 547, and so on.

"By the way, I haven't asked for your names yet?"

The hunter rubbed his hands together, his eyes filled with anticipation.

Surrounded by all kinds of Dier, he was very curious and envious of the names of outsiders.

"My name is Dier."

The hunter's pupils constricted, his right hand gripping the longbow, and he said in a deep voice:

"Kid, only His Majesty the King can call himself Dier without a profession, number, or characteristic;

Anyone else who calls themselves Dier will face severe punishment."

Dier stared intently into his eyes and said firmly:

"But I really am called Dier."

"Do you believe me?"

Whoosh!

An arrow flew over his head like thunder, disappearing into the forest.

The hunter's threatening voice followed:

"I'll pretend I didn't hear what you just said, but if you call yourself Dier again, the next arrow will hit your head."

His expression was serious, and another arrow was already nocked on the bowstring.

"Sorry, sorry, uncle, just call me Dean."

Upon hearing this response, the hunter finally lowered his bow and laughed heartily:

"Ha ha ha~ That's more like it."

"That's a nice name; does it have any special meaning?"

"Well, that goes back five hundred years..."

Dier casually fabricated a story to brush off the hunter, a hint of doubt flashing through his mind.

He wasn't stubbornly insisting on calling himself Dier; he wanted to take this opportunity to observe the progress of his hypnosis.

He had activated his hypnosis ability when they first met, and about thirty minutes had passed since then.

So far, the hunter showed no signs of being hypnotized.

To know that it had only taken twenty minutes to hypnotize a kid who was seriously studying for six years back then.

"I'll find someone else to try later and see if it's a problem with the island or the person."

He secretly made up his mind, deciding to stop the hypnosis and focus on chatting with the hunter.

Hina was dumbfounded on the side; she had no idea her father's name had so much depth.

Robin uncrossed her arms from her chest.

If the hunter had made a move just now, she would have immediately activated her ability to pluck out his eyeballs.

According to their tacit understanding, Dier would also have used his Electric Fist for a lethal strike.

Fortunately, things hadn't escalated to that point, and Dier and the hunter were having a pleasant conversation.

"Um, Miss Robin, do you know the names of Dier's parents?"

"Hina is curious."

Robin turned her head and found Hina sitting beside her, looking at her eagerly.

"Dier's parents, huh..."

She rested her chin on her hands, pretending to think for a moment before shaking her head:

"I don't know."

She wouldn't answer such a personal question without Dier's permission.

"Alright, Hina is disappointed."

Hina sighed.

Dier had accidentally used his father's name, and he had planned to use her mother's name instead.

Before Hina could decide on a fake name to use later, Dier had already made the decision for her.

"Those two over there are my sisters;"

"The black-haired one is Jolyne, and the pink-haired one is Lis."
