Chapter 33 - The Hunting Grounds (2)

This intrusion had never been mere provocation.

It was an invitation.

Or a challenge.

The tension did not ease.

The air grew dense, heavy with opposing wills.

Mehrunes Dagon shifted, circling with slow intent, as though already mapping where flame would take hold, where the realm would crack first beneath ruin.

"You misunderstand," Dagon said. "We are not here to fight you."

Hircine did not move.

"That is unfortunate," he replied. "Because I am ready to fight you."

A soft sound slipped through the stillness.

Namira chuckled, low and hollow, like something stirring beneath grave-soil.

"We are here," she said, "to invite you."

The word invite lingered in the air for a brief second.

Molag Bal spoke next, his voice measured, each syllable deliberate.

"The continent of Skyrim is… fertile."

Hircine remained silent, but his gaze sharpened.

"It breeds warriors," Bal continued. "Struggle, conflict, ambition. Mortals who claw upward, who refuse to remain weak."

Dagon's flames flared, casting violent light across the blackened grass.

"It is a crucible," he said. "A proving ground. And we will harvest it."

Namira's voice followed, "An army born from hunger, from ruin, from all things cast aside."

Hircine's eyes narrowed.

"You intend to conquer it."

Molag Bal's lips curved faintly.

"We intend to use it."

Dagon's voice struck like a falling blade.

"And then we will use what it creates to conquer everything else."

Silence answered them. Its very weight was beyond oppressing.

The kind that gathers before blood is spilled.

Hircine stepped forward, fury burning in his eyes.

"You see a farm," he said, each word slow, grounded. "I see a hunt."

His gaze passed over each of them, unflinching.

"Mortals struggle because they must. Predator and prey. Strength tested against weakness." A pause. "Nothing is given. Everything is earned."

His voice hardened.

"You would turn them into cattle."

Molag Bal did not hesitate.

"Yes."

"You ask me to submit," Hircine said, the truth settling into place.

"We offer you a place," Namira corrected softly.

"In a greater order," Molag Bal added.

"In inevitable destruction," Dagon finished.

Hircine's answer came at once.

"No."

"Listen to yourselves echoing one another like triplets, same tired lines like recycled sentences."

"No spark, no bite, just noise in repetition. You move in a pack but still lack direction."

Dagon's flames surged, violent and immediate.

"You refuse power?" he demanded.

"I refuse corruption," Hircine laughed.

Molag Bal's presence deepened, pressing harder against the world.

"Then you refuse survival."

Hircine smiled.

Not calmly.

Not kindly.

It was the smile of something that had already chosen the chase.

"You believe yourselves hunters," he said.

A pause.

Long enough for instinct to stir.

"You are not."

The realm shifted.

Trees leaned inward, branches creaking as though drawn by unseen gravity. The air thickened with scent—iron, fur, soil, blood-memory.

"You are prey," Hircine said.

For a brief fleeting moment, they felt it.

Not fear.

But the shape of it.

Then Dagon snarled, flame breaking the stillness.

"This is pointless," he said. "He will not bend."

Molag Bal turned slightly, his gaze cold and certain.

"Then he will break."

Namira lingered a heartbeat longer, her form shifting at the edges, studying Hircine as one might study something rare… or inevitable.

Then they withdrew.

The sky tore once more, a burning wound opening above them. Fire, shadow, and decay slipped back through it, vanishing from the Hunting Grounds as abruptly as they had come.

The wound sealed.

The realm exhaled.

Silence returned.

But the Hunt did not.

No prey stirred. No hunter moved.

Hircine stood alone.

Time passed, unmeasuredly.

At last, he spoke.

Quietly.

So quietly that even the wind strained to hear.

"Bastards. You think yourself wise?"

"Just a little more time. He is almost ready."

Hircine's eyes burned brighter.

"One champion," he murmured.

His voice carried, threading through the stillness, reaching every corner of the endless wild.

"One true hunter."

A faint smile returned.

"And they will learn…"

A pause.

"…what it means to be hunted."
