Chapter 1 - chapter 1(Desert Dreams)

The air over Sonora Valley shimmered like heat-struck glass. Maya Sanchez wiped the sweat from her brow as she carried a tray of iced teas to the last occupied booth in the diner. The Silver Cactus was always slow after two o'clock, but today felt particularly quiet—like the desert itself had decided to nap.

She liked these slow hours. They gave her time to think—about melodies that had been haunting her since sunrise, about lyrics that stubbornly refused to fit together. Most people in town only knew Maya as the twenty-three-year-old waitress with an old guitar and a stubborn streak. Few knew she was convinced—deep in her bones—that music was her way out.

The bell above the door jingled. In walked Leo Park, dusty camera bag slung over his shoulder, the kind of man who looked like he had stories worth telling. He was a regular, though not for the food—he always seemed more interested in catching fleeting moments with his lens than in eating a proper meal.

"Hot day," he said as Maya poured him coffee.

"Like every other day in Sonora Valley," she replied, smiling faintly.

Her shifts ended at six. That evening, like most evenings, she walked two blocks to the cracked sidewalk corner outside the old post office, set down her guitar case, and began to play. The songs were her own—half-polished, a little raw, but alive in ways she couldn't explain. The sound drifted through the warm night air, weaving between the hum of passing cars and the chatter from the cantina across the street.

Leo lingered nearby, his camera clicking in quiet bursts. Maya noticed, but didn't mind. She was used to strangers watching for a song or two before moving on.

But Leo didn't move on. He kept recording, as if he knew something she didn't—that this night, this song, might be the start of something bigger.

Maya finished her set, coins clinking into her guitar case. "Thanks for listening," she said as Leo stepped forward.

"I wasn't just listening," he replied. "I was capturing something."

She frowned. "Capturing what?"

He glanced at his camera, then back at her. "A rising star. You'll see."
