Chapter 23 - 23

Pepper Potts was stunned. She couldn't believe that these words came out of Tony Stark's mouth.

Oh my God, is this still the arrogant, narcissistic, and promiscuous playboy?

When did he realize this?

"Tony, if Captain America were still alive, you would definitely be his confidant right now." Pepper Potts looked at Tony Stark with some obsession. Although the Tony Stark in front of her was a little abnormal, she had to admit that Tony Stark like this was really charming.

"That World War II veteran?" Tony Stark said, chewing his sandwich. "I don't think he'd like me. I mean, like me."

"Don't say that. Captain America is indeed a true superhero, worthy of all our admiration." Pepper Potts saw that Tony Stark was eating hurriedly and handed him a glass of juice. "But you, you are also a superhero, and you have saved many families. In my opinion, the only difference between you and Steve Rogers is that he lives in everyone's hearts, while you, truly live."

"Pepper, don't say that. Oh, I'm talking about you saying Cap's dead. I really love hearing you say I'm a superhero. You can keep saying it three thousand times." Tony Stark took the juice and gulped down two big gulps. "I mean, Cap doesn't just live in everyone's hearts. Maybe he lives in this world, too."

"Come on, Tony! You've just been serious for five minutes, and you're already teasing again, and the target of your teasing is Captain America." Pepper Potts rolled her eyes. "He's the first superhero in history. He's your predecessor, so you should show him proper respect."

"Pepper, let me tell you a secret. Don't tell anyone else." Tony Stark waved at Pepper Potts.

"Is it really a secret?" Pepper Potts asked doubtfully.

"It's a real secret. I haven't told anyone."

"Okay then, I'm all ears." Pepper Potts leaned over and put her ear close to Tony Stark's mouth.

"The secret is..." Tony Stark drawled, adding to the suspense, "I'm more handsome than that old soldier."

"Tony!" Pepper Potts gave Tony Stark a reproachful look.

"Okay, okay, I'll tell you the real secret." Tony Stark was in a good mood after successfully teasing Pepper. "Captain America, Steve Rogers, he is very likely still alive."

"You're lying to me again!" Pepper Potts snatched Tony Stark's half-eaten sandwich. "Okay, I have to leave now. I'm busy."

"It's true." Tony Stark leaned forward and snatched the sandwich from Pepper Potts' mouth. "Someone is trying hard to find it."

"It's been nearly 70 years since the Captain died, hasn't it?" Pepper Potts said, still unconvinced. "There's no God in this world, so how could they resurrect someone who's been dead for 70 years?"

"Speaking of God, let me tell you a second secret. There are Gods in this world," Tony Stark said, "and they will come to Earth."

"Come on!" Pepper Potts shrugged, feeling that Tony Stark was getting more and more outrageous.

"There is no God in this world, so how can someone who has been dead for 70 years be resurrected?" At the same time Pepper Potts said this, a white-haired and wrinkled old man in a nursing home in New York said the same thing.

"It's not resurrection, it's that he never died at all." Maria Hill sat next to Peggy Carter, peeling an orange for her as she spoke. "The captain chose to jump into the sea to avoid the bomb exploding in New York, but all these years have passed, and we still haven't found the captain's body. Carter, have you ever wondered why?"

"Because he's not dead, there's no body?" Peggy Carter looked at the ceiling.

The sound of a car roaring could be heard again, and a young and handsome face appeared in front of me.

He was wearing a uniform with stars and stripes, holding a shield in his hand, sitting in the passenger seat, Colonel Phillips was driving, and she was sitting behind him.

Colonel Phillips drove the car so fast that he almost drove it like an airplane.

But they still couldn't catch up with the person who was running away in front of them, because the person was really flying a plane.

"Hold on!" Captain America stood up with his shield.

"Wait!" Peggy Carter threw aside all her daughter's shyness, put her arms around Captain America's neck, and the two kissed passionately.

"Go kill him!" she told him.

"I won't kiss you!" He boarded the plane amidst Colonel Phillips's unfunny joke.

Then, he never came back.

It was she who personally sent him to his doom.

Looking back, she regretted it countless times and shed tears countless times. If she had not encouraged him to get on the plane that day, but tried to keep him, would he have survived?

But she knew that no matter whether she tried to persuade him to stay or not, it would be in vain, and he would eventually get on that plane, even though he knew he could never go back.

That's him!

A true hero!

Steve Rogers!

Everyone knows that Captain America is the first superhero in American history, but Peggy Carter doesn't like to be called that. She prefers to call him a "hero" rather than a "superhero."

The greatness of Steve Rogers does not lie in the fact that he is a super soldier, but in the person he is, his spirit, and his personal charm.

Steve Rogers's status as a hero had nothing to do with his super soldier identity.

Even if he had not been injected with the serum, even if he was still that skinny boy, when faced with a choice, he would still make the greatest choice!

"Tell me the coordinates and I'll find you a safe landing spot."

"Maybe there's no time to worry about safety. I'm going to try to make an emergency landing."

"I'll have Howard listen. He knows what to do."

"There's no time. This plane is going too fast and is heading for New York. I have to land it in the sea."

"Please, don't do this. There's still time. We can think of a solution."

"If we don't act now, many lives will be lost. Peggy, I guess I'll have to dance with you another time."

"Next Saturday at the Stork Club."

This was the last conversation between her and him. Even after seventy years, she still remembered it and had not forgotten a single word.

The roar of the plane's propellers, the sound of the plane crashing into the sea, and the sound of the surging waves echoed in her ears every night.

The corners of Peggy Carter's eyes became moist, and two lines of tears silently slid down.

"Steve, you still owe me a dance..."
