That comment made me pause. I glanced back at my mother, who responded with a gentle smile. "Keir is what we call a nomad in our world. He originally belonged to my father's pack, then followed me to your father's territory, and eventually here. He's chosen not to pledge his allegiance to Rober, so he lives outside pack boundaries. He established this shop, and since he's one of the few warriors skilled enough to produce effective descenting spray, Rober tolerates his presence."
My mother approached Keir and placed a kiss on his cheek. His eyes warmed as he said, "Always a pleasure to serve my Luna."
"Oh, I see—he meant he follows you," I said, pointing between them. My mother exchanged a meaningful look with Keir, who gave a subtle nod.
"Yes and no," she replied. "Keir is also a shaman."
"A what?" The term was unfamiliar to me.
