"Some bonds are a curse disguised as destiny, and some hearts would rather starve alone than risk being broken twice."
The Eastern Chambers Intrusion.
I was Head Enforcer of the Northern Kingdom, his Majesty King Alaric's blade and shadow, feared by enemies, respected by allies, obeyed by all. My word could empty a hall or silence an entire battalion. And yet, here I was slinking through moonlit corridors like some lovesick pup with my idiot younger brother at my heels.
"Do you hear yourself?" Rell hissed as we turned into the eastern wing. "We are sneaking into a guest chamber in the dead of night. If anyone sees us—"
I cut him a glare over my shoulder. "Then you'll tell them you were following orders."
"Orders?" he scoffed. "From whom? You?"
"Yes." I nodded.
"Convenient." He responded, and I could hear the teasing note in his voice.
I clenched my jaw. "Do shut up, Rell."
