Chapter 4 - chapter 3:Calfo the magic teacher

Chuck arrives at the castle library, and notices a lone figure sleeping in a velvet chair with a book in his hands.

He appears to be a middle aged man with light brown short messy hair, a ruffled robe, and glasses that are half down his face.

Chuck assumes since he is the only person here that this must be Calfo the magic teacher from Elgar academy.

Elgar academy is a prestigious school located in the royal capital of Goroth, it teaches various subjects such as magic, swordsmanship, etc. as well as basic skills like reading, math, etc

If one wants to become a renowned magician, knight, merchant, or etc. Then they must go to school somewhere to learn the skills and get the certifications.

Elgar academy is just one of the best options, albeit tough to get in to due to it being a prestigious school.

Chuck walks up to Calfo and stops in front of him before clearing his throat and speaking.

*ahem*

"Mr. Calfo?"

Calfo remains asleep though.

"Mr. CALFO!"

This time he jolts awake and suddenly half awake raises his hand and much to chucks shock blasts a magic water ball towards him.

"AHHH" Calfo shouts as he was startled awake.

The water blast hits Chuck and sends him skidding about a couple feet back, it packed quite the punch for just a ball of water.

'Was that magic?' Chuck wondered.

Mr. Calfo realizes what he has just done and quickly approaches the stranger and apologizes.

"Oh my goodness, I am so sorry sir, you startled me. Here allow me to help you up Mister?"

Chuck accepted his help and stood up before answering.

"Tom, Tom Dark, I was told to come to you to learn magic."

Mr. Calfo feels even more embarrassed now that he knows he blasted the hero with water and not just any stranger.

Calfo adjusted his crooked glasses, still flustered.

"Right, right… the hero. I was told you'd be coming at some point, though I didn't expect you to sneak up on me like some assassin."

Chuck smirked faintly.

"Guess I'll knock louder next time."

Truth is even if Chuck had knocked it wouldn't have made any difference, because the library is quite large and Calfo was at the back.

The older man gave a tired chuckle and gestured toward a long wooden table in the center of the library.

"Sit. Before we start hurling fireballs and freezing the air solid, you need to understand the basics—or else you'll blow yourself up. And I don't say that as a joke."

Chuck took a seat, watching as Calfo rummaged through stacks of parchment and thick tomes. He eventually produced a crystal sphere roughly the size of a melon and set it on the table between them.

"This," Calfo said, tapping it lightly, "is a mana resonance crystal. It reacts to the magic particles in your body. We'll use it to measure your particle count and—"

After Calfo explained the gist of things he instructed Chuck to place his hand on the crystal. He did so and it glowed a slightly bright blue light about the size of a ping pong ball.

Calfo stared at it for a few seconds as if expecting it to change size possibly and then he spoke.

"…Well, that's good…your Magic is slightly higher than average, which for a hero from another world who can improve it, gives you even more of a head start."

Chuck grinned when hearing this.

"Alright now let's get you started on the basics."

*Ding!

A system notification appeared before Chuck

[New quest issued: magic firepower

Quest description: it's time for you to learn this worlds magic, gain some attack power while your at it.

Quest goal: learn a attack spell or create one

Quest rewards: 2 stat points to magic]

He figured this quest doesn't sound so tough so he should be able to complete it within a day or two, as long as he learns fast enough.

Calfo taught Chuck for a whole 2 hours nonstop, telling him various things such as explaining magic particles, how magic worked, and much more.

At one point towards the end of the lesson he grabbed Chucks wrist and channeled magic particles through him so he can get used to the feeling and be able to use magic himself.

By the end of the lesson Chuck was able to create magic at the end of a fingertip, albeit small amounts.

Calfo guided him through producing various things at his fingertip one at a time, first it was a little flame, then it was a little drop of water, then a rock, then a few more small things one by one.

Though some things were really tough to produce and barely worked while others were easy and worked great, this was due to Chuck's natural affinities with the magics.

When they were finished Calfo spoke once more.

"Hmm, it seems you have great affinity for fire magic, wind magic, and dark magic the others are kind of not suited for you. Though you can use them, you will never be proficient or able to master them and use them properly."

Upon hearing this and seeing how difficult it is to learn magic Chuck realized it may be more difficult than he thought to learn a attack spell especially if he can only make the measly little magic at his fingertip right now.

Chuck was elated when he heard about the dark magic, such a magic was perfect for a villain to use.

On the note of dark magic, Calfo spoke up.

"Please be wary of how you use dark magic, though it is allowed to be used and studied, certain aspects of it are taboo and forbidden such as the foul necromancy dark magic that manipulates the deceased. I advise you to read about it in your free time if you have any to learn what is and isn't acceptable, I don't have time to teach you everything after all, I'm only here for two weeks. Though I doubt I have to worry too much about a hero such as yourself straying down that path, still be careful though."

*ding!

Another notification appeared but he didn't pay attention to it yet.

Chuck nodded while listening closely then a few moments later they wrapped up their lesson and Chuck left the library promising to be there tomorrow for the next lesson.

Chuck headed back to his quarters.

Upon arriving in his room he flopped on the big fancy bed, exhausted…

Looking out then glass on the doors of the balcony he could see that it was night now and the purple moon was rising.

He almost forgot about the other notification he got from the system, he opens it now.

[new quest issued: darkness reigns supreme

Quest description: Time to start growing your evil skills, study the bad side of dark magic, lean into what the magic teacher advised against.

Quest goal: learn a necromancy spell or ritual, or flesh shaping magic

Reward:

trait: Whispers of the Grave – Occasionally, the dead guide your hand when casting dark magic, reducing mana cost.

Item: Bone Charm – A small talisman made from an unknown creature's remains. While carried, dark magic spells have a marginally faster cast time.]

This is great he thought, but now he had to decide which one to learn, necromancy which is self explanatory or flesh shaping, whatever flesh shaping is.

He could always learn one for now and learn the other later, the problem is practicing them.

Since they're taboo he can't exactly do anything out in the open, so he would need to be somewhere like his quarters and even then he might have a risk of getting caught just significantly less.

Oh well he thought, he would deal with those things when it comes to it.

It's been a long day, he thought to himself, so much has happened in one day that it's a bit overwhelming.

Still though, it's more exciting and interesting than overwhelming, he is looking forward to the rest of his new life in this new world, as he drifts off to sleep.
