As Nico Robin clicked her heels down the stairs of Rain Dinners, she had to fight to keep the smile off her face. It would seem her faith in Monkey D. Luffy was well-placed at this point, but only time would tell if he would win in the end.
By the time she reached the basement, she could already tell Crocodile was in a bad mood. Maybe it was the complete radio silence from Mr. 2, maybe it was the massive Marine presence now swarming around Sandy Island, or even the rumors that the Revolutionary Army was snooping around.
"What is it, Miss All-Sunday?" he growled, a plume of smoke following from his mouth.
"I've just received this from one of Bon Clay's men…" She handed over the manila envelope. Crocodile opened it with his hook before his eyes bolted open.
"A resignation letter?! Is this some kind of joke?!"
"Apparently not, sir," Robin said calmly, reading the letter herself. According to this, Bentham had seen the error of his ways and decided to find a different means to release Ivankov from Impel Down. Even worse, all of his Billions quit in solidarity meaning Baroque Works just lost almost thirty men on top of one of their Officer Agents.
"It was that damn Luffy, wasn't it?!" Crocodile ranted, "I've officially gotten confirmation that he's arrived in Alabasta and his crew attacked our naval fleet on the Sandora River! Do you have any intel on him?"
"Indeed, sir. It appears he was assisted in escaping from Marines in Nanohana by First Fist Ace."
The Warlord stared at her as though she just suggested her purple hat tasted delicious. "I do not appreciate jokes, Miss All-Sunday."
"I'm being completely serious, sir. Our agents stationed there can confirm that they were almost burnt alive by his Flame-Flame Fruit. Here's the only picture they managed to take…"
Robin pulled out a photograph from the inside lining of her luxurious coat before handing it to her boss. Crocodile took one look at the smirking visage of Ace before crumpling the photo in his hand.
"Why the hell does Whitebeard have one of his Division Commanders this far back into Paradise? He can't possibly be concerned for the people."
"If I may guess, sir, it's most likely because of his personal relationship with Monkey D. Luffy. I did some digging into his background as you ordered and it seems he and Portgas D. Ace were both raised on Dawn Island in the East Blue. They were raised on Mount Corvo by Curly Dadan of the Dadan Family. They departed their home island three years apart, upon each of them turning seventeen."
"The last thing we need either way is that old codger getting involved. And without Mr. 2 and his Clone-Clone Fruit, a vital part of Operation: Utopia will have to be adjusted… And is there any word of the Unluckies?"
"Unfortunately, sir, they attempted to perform reconnaissance on the Marines and were captured by one Captain Smoker. They have both been detained and are awaiting transport."
Now Crocodile had to excuse himself, most likely going to attack some bandits to calm down. Once he was out of the room, Robin chuckled.
"Goodness, now I see why they call him 'Chaos…'" She admired the bounty poster, "A Charlotte in your ranks, Fire Fist Ace is your brother, and somehow you manage to turn yet another agent against us. What's your secret? How do you just sway people to your side?"
"Alright, anchor's secured!" Clarisse yelled out.
"Good! Vivi, are you sure nobody's going to touch the ship?"
"Very few vessels sail this far into the Sandora River anymore, ever since Crocodile started hitting the towns lining the riverbanks. I guess that's one upside to all of this…"
Luffy placed a hand on the princess's shoulder, brightening her up a bit before she left with the others to change clothes. Vivi had made perfectly clear how traversing the desert was a tiring journey on its own. With the wrong clothes, it was even more perilous. That was why Vivi pointed them towards a store that would supply the proper garments.
As the door opened, Luffy turned to see Makino and his cheeks turned red. His first crewmate was now dressed in what could only be described as a belly-dancer's outfit, a deep green shawl wrapped around her chest with a matching sheer skirt and veil to shield her hair from the harsh sun. One by one the Straw Hats revealed themselves in similarly wispy, brightly colored garments that matched their respective hair colors. All of said hair was tied back into braids or ponytails to keep it out of their eyeline.
"Well, at least we have a good cover story," Carina mused, quite amused by her own indigo outfit, "We'll just say we're a traveling dancing troupe!"
"Heh, works for me!" Luffy's only change was having some blue cloth attached to the brim of his straw hat to further keep out the shade. On his back were barrels of water that would have to last the whole crew at least two days until they reached Yuba.
"Okay, everyone, head due west!" Nami said, double-checking the map Vivi made, "We're already losing daylight."
To most, the trek through a harsh stretch of sands would be an ordeal. But thanks to the lighthearted atmosphere of the Straw Hat Pirates, the time moved faster as the girls weaved in an out of conversation with each other. The only exception was Luffy, keeping an eye out for any hostile wildlife.
First came the Bandit Birds, tall-legged fowl covered in white feathers that tried to play sick so they could make off with the crew's supplies. Fortunately, his Haki made their intentions painfully obvious and they were swiftly put down, defeathered and made into poultry to add to their food stock.
Then came the Sandora River Dragon, a gargantuan, purple-scaled reptile almost as big as the Going Merry. While intimidating, it was no match for Mikita and the Kilo-Kilo Fruit. A sudden hit to the head by something weight ten thousand kilos would be enough to kill almost anything, the massive lizard left lying in the sands while the crew barely broke its stride.
As the hottest part of the afternoon passed, the crew took shelter at one of the sparse rocky outcroppings to eat and recharge until the sun went down. While they took in the striking sunset over the dunes, Vivi stared at it with a deeply mixed expression. Her eyes clearly admired such a familiar sight, but her lips were creased in worry.
"A strange feeling, isn't it?" Sally asked next to her. Vivi only nodded, the blonde queen looking much more enthusiastic despite the light sheen of sweat on her forehead.
"I understand most wouldn't consider this much of a home, but it clearly means the world to you. I almost wish I felt anything towards Dawn Island other than apathy."
"Oh, because of the wealth gap?"
"That, and my legal husband being an obnoxious twit. Your father must truly love you, to be willing to let you go on this mission."
The princess nodded again. "Even as many of the rebels curse his name, he's still concerned with helping as many towns as possible. I just… How can Crocodile do this?! What makes him think he can torment so many for his own gain?!"
"The same way those snobs in High Town think its hilarious that others can't afford food or a home. That those 'little people' aren't worthy of anything. That they should be lucky they can share the same space as their 'betters.'"
Vivi heard the disgust in that last word. She always considered herself spoiled with how Igaram and the royal guard fussed over her safety, but she never understood how other nobles and royals saw themselves as superior to others. It was the duty of those in power to serve the common people, not the other way around.
"I'll admit, though, I didn't do much to change things," Sally said with a sigh, "I was just too concerned keeping myself as far from Stelly as possible. Maybe had I pushed harder for reform, or even told the World Government about just how corrupt those in Goa are, I could have made things better. Vivi, be grateful you have the chance to help. If we had more leaders like you, we'd have a better world."
The smell of freshly cooked bird brought both royals to the fire with everyone else, trading jokes and stories that made Vivi smile in spite of her fears. Once everyone was filled up, they bundled up for the night and were ready to wake up at the crack of dawn to cover more ground. As long as they didn't hit any roadblocks, they would reach Yuba by nightfall.
That roadblock came in form of a massive form streaking through the dunes straight towards them, the crew all leaping aside so they weren't mowed down. When the giant plume cleared, they were shocked to see a sizeable ship on par with the Mini Melody. With three sails going from bow to aft, but its ridged bottom made it clear this ship was meant to sail on dunes instead of water.
And from the decks of this ship, dozens of people all dressed in light cloaks and umbrellas attached to their heads leapt down and surrounded the Straw Hats.
"Alright, hold it!" a bearded, rotund man still on the ship called, "This'll be a simple affair! Hand over all of your food, and we'll be right on our way!"
"Oh, so are we just supposed to eat sand?" Custard asked, palming her sword, "Because in that case, I doubt even our cook can make that appetizing."
"Heh, cheeky ladies… Is that a fight you want?"
"Wait, stop!" Vivi called out, "We have money!"
"Money ain't going to do us much good, young lady. The nearest town worth a damn is days away and our stores are getting low! We're gonna need you to cooperate here, or else this will get messy."
Nojiko, her back to the sand ship, placed her hands on its hull and willed tendrils to emerge to start swatting at the nearest bandits. With that distraction, the Straw Hats all pulled out their weapons and now the two crews had a stand-off… Or they would if Honey Queen hadn't slinked around behind the ship and blasted the captain off with a spray of syrup.
When he looked up, the captain met with Luffy's glare. Despite his shorter height and relatively slim figure, the man flinched at the intensity in his eyes.
"We're sorry you're all hungry, but we've got an important mission. If it works out, you oughta have an easier time without Crocodile."
"Crocodile?!" the entire crew yelled out. One figure, the lone woman of the group with her straight black hair off-set by a colorful miniature parasol braided through the top, stepped forward.
"You plan on antagonizing Crocodile, a Warlord in the employ of the World Government? You are either brave or foolish."
"No, I plan on kicking his ass out. He may go around beating up bandits and acting like a hero but-"
"Yeah, and bleeding us dry!" the captain cried, "Ever since that sandy son of a bitch showed up, every horde of bandits for miles has dried up! We used to feast like kings before him, and now we're reduced to attacking mere travelers!"
"Um, Captain Barbarossa?" one of the other pirates eked, "I don't think they're travelers…"
"Hm? What's that, your bounty posters?" Barbarossa took the stack and immediately recognized each of them as he shuffled through them until he got to Luffy's 75 million beri bounty at the bottom.
"WHAAAAAA?! What the devil are a bunch of seafaring pirates doing in the middle of the desert?!"
"Everybody, calm down!" Carmen yelled, "Relax, we don't plan on hurting you. In fact, with all those bandit birds we caught yesterday, we should have enough to feed everyone. No seconds, admittedly, but still."
"Wait, what?!" the woman gasped, "We just threatened to rob you, and now you're going to feed us?"
"Why not?" Nami asked, "It sounds like you guys only attack bandits, and we hate Crocodile too. Besides, there is one thing you can offer us in return…"
Her eyes drifted to the sand ship and the captain nodded. In exchange for the meal, they'd give the Straw Hats a ride to their destination. And thanks to Carmen and Reiju working alongside the desert pirates' own cooks with their local spices, they made a delectable, pan-fried bandit bird that made the other crew weep in delight.
"Hahahaha, this is best I've eaten in ages!" Barbarossa cried, "I think it's safe to call you all friends of the Barbar Pirates!"
"Hehehe, thanks!" Luffy laughed, "Your ship is super cool, too! How does it sail on land?"
"Ah, it only works on the sand. It can run aground on rocks or soil, but there isn't much of that outside of a few tricky spots. And thanks to Rasa there, we always go the right way!"
Luffy turned to the female of the Barbar crew who seemed to be at peace. She had finally let her hair down a little, chatting with Ban and Honey Queen about life in the East Blue and on the sea.
"So," Barbarossa whispered, "Any reason you're traveling with the princess of our country?"
Luffy had to stop himself before he crushed his plate in his hand. "She asked us for help, we said yes."
"Heh, so it has nothing to do with Crocodile, does it?"
"Yes, as a matter of fact, it does," the princess said, sitting in front of them, "That man is the one tearing Alabasta apart, all for his own personal benefit. I know it doesn't mean much coming from me, but I'm sorry you all have suffered from his plan."
"Well now, a princess apologizing to a pirate… Now I've seen everything!" As he laughed, Rasa walked up to the group.
"If you are truly looking to bring Crocodile to justice, then it seems we have a common goal. Tell me, who is your navigator?"
Nami raised her hand, and soon the two began to talk. With one specializing in land navigation and the other on the ocean, the two had a fair amount to discuss. The similarities and differences between their fields aside, Rasa seemed to get an idea and began whispering in Nami's ear.
The redhead soon joined the captain's circle and shared that idea. "Rasa wants to come with us!"
"Is that so?" Barbarossa asked, "One good meal and you plan on ditching us, huh?"
"You know that isn't it," Rasa argued, "But this Crocodile is potentially a threat to us all. If a war breaks out between the Royal and Rebel Armies, then we will get dragged into the crossfire. Either we align ourselves with one side of the conflict or we'll be prey for both."
The Barbar captain stood up, dusted himself off and places a hand on his crewwoman's shoulder. "Rasa, you've always been too clever by half. Very well, I hereby allow you to assist the Straw Hat Pirates on this plan!"
The two crews then piled on to the Sand Sled before Rasa charted a course towards Yuba. With the aid of the ship, the journey that was supposed to take all day ended by sunset. Vivi stood at the bow of the ship to catch the first sight of the rebels only for her eyes to scan the now desolate town.
"What the?! Where are they?!"
The rest of the crew check and indeed there was nobody in sight. The Straw Hats came off the ship a ways away to not spook anyone but there was no need. Yuba, once a sparkling oasis renowned for its plentiful water, was now a husk. The only resident was an old man desperately shoveling in the middle of the town like a man possessed.
"Oh, travelers! Welcome to Yuba!" he said, his voice raspy like it was filled with sand but very joyful.
"That voice… Toto, is that you?!"
"What?! Princess Vivi?! Is that you?! Goodness, I kept telling that son of mine you'd come back!"
"Wait, Koza was here?! Where is he now?!"
"Apparently, stocking up for some big plan in Katorea. That boy is just too stubborn for his own good."
"Ka… Katorea…" Vivi fell to her knees. Kaya moved next to her, trying to assure her it would be alright but the princess screamed to the sky.
"THAT'S RIGHT NEXT TO NANOHANA! WE WERE RIGHT NEXT TO HIM! DAMN IT!"
"Vivi, it'll be okay," Ban told her only for the younger royal to shoot to her feet.
"You're right! With this sand ship, if we don't stop, we can easily get back to the ships by sunrise. Then, from there we sail full-tilt back down the Sandora River until we reach the coast and-"
"No."
The whole crew froze as Luffy stood there, his arms crossed and eyes hidden by the brim of his hat. Vivi's face was as betrayed as it could be.
"No?! What do you mean, no?! Didn't you hear me?! Koza is in Katorea! We need to reach him to stop the Rebel Army!"
"Toto, Koza is your son, right? Why is he leading the Rebel Army?"
"Because that boy bought every last story about King Nefertari Cobra! The Dance Powder, the droughts plaguing us, and decided he couldn't take it anymore. I told him over and over again it had to be a misunderstanding!"
"Exactly. It's his dream to restore peace, then."
"Well, there won't be any peace if this keeps up!" Vivi argued, "Look at this place, utterly deserted! And it's all that monster Crocodile's fault!"
"And what would that do? He has 700,000 people on his side. Are every single one of them going to stop, just because Koza says so?"
The princess, more furious than any had ever seen her, marched up to Luffy and stared him dead in the eye. "You promised me. You said you would do everything to help me save my country."
"That's right, I did."
"So why the hell are you standing here, arguing with me, instead of helping me? Is it because you're backing out now? Or because you want something?"
"Vivi, enough!" Kuina barged in, "He is our captain, and that means he decides where we go. And look around, does anyone else here think scrambling back the way we came to maybe catch Koza is a good idea?"
The princess searched around and only saw people either looking away or distinctly unimpressed with this idea. Even Ban and Sally, both rulers in their own right, were staring down Vivi like she was a child.
"Fine. Fine! Forget all of you! I'll just go with the Barbar Pirates to Katorea myself and-"
"I'm sorry, who made you captain of our ship?" Rasa cut in, "We agreed to help Luffy here, not you."
"WHAT?! But what about stopping Crocodile?!"
"We'll be stopping Crocodile. If you want to go on some wild goose chase, don't go dragging us around with you."
"Princess, if I may?"
They all turned to see Toto put down his shovel and approach her with reverence. "You know my son too well. The moment he sets his eyes on something, he won't budge until either he's definitively proven wrong or he sees it through. He didn't take too kindly to you at first, if you'll recall."
Seeing the confused looks on the pirates' faces, Vivi explained she and her father were helping Toto and Koza establish Yuba almost a decade ago. The two were actually invited to live in the palace while the negotiations were happening, but Koza resented the whole situation and spent most of his time in the city of Alubarna with other poor kids. One day, Vivi snuck out of the palace and found his group, the Sand-Sand Clan, and challenged Koza to a fight. While losing badly, her courage impressed the boy enough to name her deputy leader of the clan.
"Between all the news siding against your father, and your two-year absence in the proceedings…"
"…He… He wouldn't believe me…" Vivi realized in horror. Now that she actually looked at it from the outside, it made sense. She had gone completely off the radar for two years, making her look just as culpable in the whole scandal. How many of those rebels waited for her to come back, or even just to hear from her, and decided to turn their back on her father when she never did?
"Vivi, I get wanting to avoid harm but it's too late for that," Luffy said gently, "If we're going to stop this, we need to do it at the source. The only person who'll convince Koza at this point is Crocodile."
"If that's where you want to go, we can reach Rainbase by morning," Rasa assured them, "Although, the idea of directly confronting a Warlord doesn't seem very smart either."
"Actually, you might have a problem with that too…" Toto spoke up, "I received this letter from Koza a while ago."
Vivi took the dried paper. It was both a final plea from Koza for her father to leave Yuba behind and seek safety elsewhere… And that the Rebel Army was planning to storm Alubarna tomorrow.
"Oh shit…" Kinderella gulped, "So, now what?"
"Now, we take action. We get on that ship and ride straight for the capital. We need to get in between the two armies, plus we also have the Marines to worry about. No doubt Hina and Smoker will try to get in the way. As far as they know, Crocodile is on their side."
As much as the princess wanted to protest, she knew this was the better plan. Not only was time of the essence, but tempers in Alabasta were about to boil over. The time for diplomacy had passed her by. She reached down to the holster on her thigh that held her peacock slashers, blades attached to piano wire which became her weapons of choice as Miss Wednesday.
She felt a comforting nudge to her side as Carue looked at her with a quiet resolution in his eyes. "You're right. If Crocodile wants to get desperate, then we don't back down. Everyone, let's go to Alubarna!"
With a much more positive crew behind her, the whole crew headed to the Sand Sled and Rasa set the fastest course possible. Toto wished the party well, handing Vivi a canteen with the last of the oasis's water. He would stay, digging for a new aqueduct. He put his life into building his town, and he would stay here to see it restored and give his son a hug and an "I told you so" when this was all over.
Deep in the heart of the desert there was the Spiders Café, an unassuming watering hole that welcomed many wanderers and tradesmen through its doors. Paula, the proprietor of this establishment, was calmly wiping down the bar as it had closed hours ago.
But, as the clock struck midnight, the door was still unlocked and in walked a strange menagerie. An old, short, frumpy-looking woman with maroon hair and massive man with the body of an oval as a massive bat strapped to his back. Both were dressed in long-sleeves, making them stand out even more given the climate.
"Oh brother, my aching back!" the woman nagged, hopping onto a bar stool while the man merely walked very slowly nearby, "Oi, what's the holdup?! Gimme a hot ginger tea, one stick of cinnamon in it! Chop chop!'
Paula just rolled her eyes, the drink already in her hands. "Good to see you too, Miss Merry Christmas. Mr. 4, would you like anything?"
"Waaaaaateeeeeer, thaaaaaaaanks," he said, his voice so slow that it actually made him tough to understand. The barmaid just handed him a glass from a cask, not minding the two radically different personalities.
She was more occupied when the third guest showed up. A tall, impressively muscled man with his white hair shaved down to stubble, his chest bared behind a plain black vest along with the kanji for one, and the baggy pants that were common for traveling the dunes.
"There you are, Mr. 1! Your usual?"
"Sure," he said gruffly, leaning against the back wall, "Where's everybody else?"
"Well, Mr. 5 is on the lam, Mr. 3 and his partner are in custody right now and I heard through the grapevine that Mr. 2 has turned on us."
"What?! Not another one!" Miss Merry Christmas whined, "It was bad enough those two morons botched it at Whiskey Peak and then the wax-freak got himself caught, but now even the okama has run out on us?! I swear, kids these days have no idea about hard work or loyalty!"
"Says the mercenary for hire…"
"You wanna say that again, asshole?!"
"Easy, both of you…" Paula said as she undid the bandana covering her blue hair, revealing a massive, frizzy afro. Her colorful apron slipped off revealing a scandalous leather getup including a bikini top, straps forming a spiderweb over her bare stomach, and tight pants that flared around her ankles. She then just handed Mr. 1 a straight shot of whiskey which he accepted with a curt nod before she leaned back against the bar.
"Whoooooo's leeeeeeft?"
"At this point, it's just the four of us," Mr. 1 said, "I hope we ge to put those pirate brats in their place."
"Well, aren't you perceptive?"
The group turned to the entryway to see none other than Miss All-Sunday waltzing in, surprising everyone.
"What are you doing here, boss lady? Don't tell me Mr. 0 is outside…"
"Relax, Miss Doublefinger, it's just me. I'm here to tell you that tomorrow morning, your final assignment will begin. You are to take the carriage I've provided outside to Alubarna and wait for the Straw Hat Pirates. They will be escorting Princess Vivi home so she can spill the truth about Baroque Works."
"Hah! Those dumb whippersnappers won't know what hit 'em! Ain't that right, Mr. 4?"
The man gave a loud, slow but very joyful guffaw as Robin placed a hand under her chin. "I'd advise you all not to underestimate them. Thanks to Mr. 2's departure, we are sorely outnumbered. Plus, it was luck that one of our agents inside the Rebel Army caught wind that they'll be marching on the capital tomorrow. Even still, be prepared for heavy opposition."
The four all nodded before piling outside, then riding off in a carriage pulled by a pair of supersonic ducks like Carue. With them gone, Robin moved to the transponder snail kept in the back of the bar before dialing a number.
"Who are you and how did you get Hina's number?" a terse female voice answered.
"That is irrelevant. I am Miss All-Sunday of Baroque Works, and I have a confession to make."
"Oh, is that so? What exactly is motivating you to call in now?"
"Because I have evidence that Sir Crocodile, a Warlord in the employ of the World Government, is plotting an insurrection that could put not only Alabasta but all of civilization as we know it at risk. If you wish to know more, meet me at the following coordinates in Alubarna tomorrow at 1100 hours."
Robin then rattled off her preferred meeting point, a small set of ruins just outside the city, before hanging up. She then reached into her folder, showing the only paper copy of Operation: Utopia written by the Warlord himself. Of course, Robin herself had these copies made. The real ones were in a safe in Crocodile's office rigged to explode after two wrong attempts at the combination were made alongside emergency funds and other vitals.
"Well now, Mr. Captain, don't disappoint me. I'm placing my trust in you…" she said to no one, pouring herself a stiff drink before heading back to the capital. Tomorrow would be a momentous day for not just this one kingdom, but for the entire world.
Next time, the people in Alubarna are in for a LOOONG day!
Thank you all so much for reading! Feel free to leave a review along with any questions or comments.
