Chapter 40 - 40

Griffin knew something was wrong.

He felt it before he saw it.

Before he heard it.

Before there was any evidence at all.

Something had changed.

The feeling followed him throughout the day like a shadow.

A customer smiled at him a second too long.

A stranger seemed to recognize him.

A parked car remained outside the shop longer than necessary.

Tiny things.

Insignificant things.

Yet together they created a feeling he could not shake.

Someone was moving pieces.

Someone was getting closer.

And Griffin hated it.

Vinny noticed the tension almost immediately.

That evening they sat together in the living room.

A movie played on the television.

Neither of them was watching it.

Griffin sat unusually still.

His arm around Vinny felt tighter than normal.

Possessive.

Protective.

Almost territorial.

"You've been quiet all day."

Griffin glanced down at him.

"So have you."

"Fair."

A small smile appeared.

Then disappeared.

The silence returned.

Eventually Vinny spoke again.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Always."

"When was the first time you saw me?"

For the briefest moment Griffin froze.

It happened so quickly most people would have missed it.

Vinny didn't.

The reaction lasted less than a second.

Then Griffin smiled.

"University."

"Where?"

"Campus."

"That's not really an answer."

Griffin chuckled softly.

"You ask difficult questions."

Vinny looked away.

"No. I ask normal questions."

The words hung between them.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Griffin's expression softened.

He gently brushed Vinny's hair away from his face.

"I remember because you looked happy."

Vinny blinked.

"What?"

"You were laughing."

Griffin's voice grew quieter.

"Dancing with your friends."

A strange feeling settled in Vinny's stomach.

Because he hadn't mentioned dancing.

Or friends.

Or any specific memory.

Yet Griffin sounded like he had witnessed it.

Seen it.

Experienced it.

The realization made him uneasy.

Very uneasy.

Across town, Shane sat in front of a whiteboard.

The investigation had reached a turning point.

Photographs covered nearly every available space.

Dates.

Locations.

Connections.

Patterns.

At the center sat a large image of Vinny.

Surrounded by dozens of smaller photographs.

Every single one connected somehow to Griffin.

Finn stared at the board.

Then sighed.

"You know what bothers me?"

"A lot of things bother you."

"True."

Shane smirked.

Finn pointed toward the photographs.

"We keep asking what Griffin did."

"Okay."

"But we haven't been asking why."

The room became quiet.

Because she was right.

Everyone focused on the obsession.

The stalking.

The surveillance.

The years of watching.

But not the reason.

Not the origin.

Not the thing that transformed admiration into obsession.

Shane crossed her arms.

"What are you thinking?"

Finn hesitated.

Then:

"I think something happened in university."

"What kind of something?"

"I don't know."

She stared at the photographs.

"But I think we're missing part of the story."

Shane's expression darkened.

Because she had been thinking the exact same thing.

Meanwhile, West sat alone in his apartment.

Several computer screens glowed around him.

One displayed Shane's investigation board.

Another showed public records.

A third displayed old university archives.

West studied them carefully.

Then smiled.

They were getting closer.

Closer than ever.

Yet still looking in the wrong direction.

Everyone believed Griffin's story started with obsession.

But that wasn't true.

The obsession came later.

Something else came first.

Something nobody had discovered yet.

Not Shane.

Not Finn.

Not Liz.

Not even Vinny.

West opened an old file.

One he had kept hidden.

One he had never shared.

His eyes settled on a single name.

Then he whispered:

"So that's where it all began."

The following afternoon, Liz received a phone call.

Unknown number.

She nearly ignored it.

Nearly.

Something made her answer.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then:

"You need to stop investigating Griffin."

Liz immediately sat upright.

Her pulse quickening.

"Who is this?"

The voice ignored the question.

"You're getting too close."

Every nerve in her body tightened.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"The wrong person."

The line disconnected.

Liz stared at her phone.

Frozen.

For several seconds she couldn't move.

Then she immediately called Shane.

An hour later Shane listened to the recording.

Repeatedly.

Again and again.

Analyzing every sound.

Every breath.

Every pause.

Finn stood nearby.

"What do you think?"

Shane replayed it once more.

Then frowned.

"That wasn't Griffin."

"You sure?"

"Positive."

"West?"

Shane shook her head.

"No."

The answer unsettled both of them.

Because it meant something else.

Someone else.

Another person involved.

Another player they hadn't accounted for.

Another secret.

The investigation suddenly felt much larger than before.

That night Vinny couldn't sleep.

Questions kept circling through his mind.

The university photographs.

Madam Grace's reaction.

Griffin's answers.

Everything felt strange.

Incomplete.

Like pieces of a puzzle refusing to fit together.

Beside him, Griffin appeared asleep.

Peaceful.

Calm.

Safe.

Vinny studied his face.

The face he loved.

The face that had rescued him.

Protected him.

Chosen him.

Yet lately…

Fear had started creeping into the edges of that love.

Not because Griffin had hurt him.

Because Griffin knew too much.

Far too much.

As Vinny lay there staring into the darkness, he made a decision.

A small one.

But important.

Tomorrow…

He was going to start looking for answers himself.

And for the first time since moving into Griffin's apartment, he would begin searching where Griffin hoped he never would.

His past.

Unaware that across the city, Shane, West, and a mysterious unknown figure had reached the exact same conclusion.

The truth was buried in university.

And whoever uncovered it first would change everything.
