Chapter 26 - 26

The early morning light streamed through the blinds at the police station. Detective Shane sat across from Liz and Finn, her coffee untouched, her gaze sharp.

"Alright," Shane said, voice low but commanding. "We need a full timeline. Start from the moment Vinny disappeared."

Liz nodded, spreading her notes across the table. "He left for work like normal. Then… he went to meet someone he thought was a friend. That's when everything went wrong."

Shane leaned in. "Friend?"

"Yeah," Liz said quietly. "It wasn't Lamar at first. It was Griffin. At least, that's how Vinny described it when he finally got home."

Finn raised an eyebrow. "You mean Griffin… the influencer?"

"Yes," Liz confirmed. "He was always around the shop, watching Vinny. But he claimed he was protecting him. Vinny believed him."

Shane's eyes narrowed. "Protecting him. From who?"

Liz shrugged. "At first, Vinny thought it was Lamar. But it didn't make sense. Griffin was… obsessive. He always knew where Vinny was, sometimes even before Vinny did."

Shane scribbled something in her notebook. "Obsessive how?"

"Notes, pictures, videos," Liz replied. "Everything Vinny did. Griffin documented it all. And he's extremely… controlling."

Finn frowned. "And his family?"

"Griffin's grandmother, Madam Grace, is aware," Liz said. "She adores him. But his mother, Evelyn, seems uneasy. She notices the intensity and is… worried."

Shane tapped her pen. "Interesting. We need her perspective. She might give us insight into Griffin's patterns."

Liz nodded. "I can reach out to her. Maybe meet at the shop or somewhere neutral."

Shane leaned back, thoughtful. "And Vinny? Has he noticed the obsession, or does he think it's all care?"

"He's caught between fear and trust," Liz said. "He knows something is off, but he also feels safe. And wanted. Griffin has him completely under his control emotionally."

Finn whistled. "This is… complicated. We're not just talking about a missing person or even harassment. This is calculated obsession."

Shane nodded. "Exactly. And that makes him dangerous. We need to prepare. We start with Evelyn, then Madam Grace, then Vinny indirectly. We build the web."

Liz frowned. "Indirectly?"

"Vinny is too close," Shane explained. "If he knows we're investigating Griffin directly, he'll react. Obsessive types don't respond rationally. But if we gather information through the adults around him, we can get evidence without putting him on edge."

Finn glanced at Liz. "That means you'll be talking to Evelyn. Slowly. Casually. Gain her trust. She's protective of her son, but she might reveal things if she thinks it's for Vinny's safety."

Liz exhaled. "I can do that. I've met her once before at the shop. She's… intimidating, but she trusts Madam Grace's opinion. If I approach it carefully, she might open up."

Shane nodded. "Good. Start there. Get everything you can. I want every routine, every pattern, every interaction Griffin has with Vinny documented. We're not just exposing him. We're protecting Vinny."

For the first time all morning, Shane smiled faintly. "And when we're done, Griffin will not see it coming."

Later that afternoon, Liz made her way to the shop. Madam Grace greeted her warmly, oblivious to the tension brewing beneath the surface.

"Liz, my dear," Madam Grace said. "It's so nice to see you again. How is Vinny?"

"Good, thank you," Liz replied carefully, keeping her tone light. "I just wanted to talk to you about his routines, you know, to help him adjust better at work."

Madam Grace beamed. "Of course. He's a bright boy, but he gets distracted sometimes. You know how young people are."

Liz nodded, hiding her awareness of the dual purpose of the visit. She needed to plant questions subtly, lead the conversation toward Griffin, and observe Madam Grace's reactions.

"And Griffin," Liz asked casually, "he comes by often, doesn't he?"

Madam Grace's eyes brightened. "Oh, my baby boy? He's wonderful. Always so protective. You don't know how lucky Vinny is to have someone looking out for him."

Liz smiled politely, careful not to reveal too much. "Of course. It's good he's so attentive. Does his mother… worry about him?"

Madam Grace hesitated, the subtle change in her expression caught Liz's eye. "Sometimes. Evelyn is very protective. But Griffin… he's special. He means well."

That small crack was enough. Liz noted it. Evelyn's concern might be the key. She needed to speak to her. Indirectly. Slowly.

As Liz left the shop, she glanced at the street. Griffin was nowhere in sight. But she knew he was watching, always watching. And that only made her more determined.

Shane would want to know every detail. Every subtle sign. Every shadow in Griffin's obsessive patterns.

The investigation was only beginning.

And the closer they got, the more dangerous it would become.

Vinny, safe inside Griffin's apartment, had no idea that the first threads of exposure had already begun to unravel.

The hunt for truth had started.
