A new morning had begun, but for William, it was unlike any other day.
Today was the day he might die in 49 days — or maybe, just maybe, he would survive.
How was he supposed to believe that?
And yet, how could he not?
He felt completely confused.
He glanced down at his clothes.
They were really dirty — maybe it was time for a change, maybe he should clean up a bit.
(This is for me, not for anyone else.)
He quickly threw his clothes into the washing machine and washed his face.
Looking at himself in the bathroom mirror, he noticed his face didn't look so tired — after all, he had gone to bed early last night.
He grabbed the cheap cleanser he had bought on a whim, rubbed it on, and rinsed his face.
For once, he finally combed his hair neatly.
He ironed his uniform, put it on, and looked at himself in the mirror.
(Hmm… not bad. Maybe if I have enough time, I could even become a model.)
William was lazy, but he had plenty of confidence.
He left the house and walked toward the street where he had seen that strange phone.
He looked down, searching the ground for it.
He searched everywhere — but it wasn't there.
(Hmm, maybe I should just give up.)
Then his eyes caught the phone — it was lying on the other side of the street.
He ran over and picked it up.
The message on the screen had changed:
"You spent the whole day searching for a logical reason… and still chased after it?
If you don't believe me, wait fifty days and see what happens."
William believed it now — or at least, he doubted far less.
He quickly slipped the phone into his bag and ran toward school.
It was no longer a fifty-fifty chance in his mind —
he was almost certain.
When he entered the classroom, everyone stared at him.
One of the girls whispered to her friend, "William's not that bad… actually, he's got a nice face."
(Hey, I can hear you…) he thought.
He sat down at his desk.
The boy next to him gave a gentle smile, and the popular handsome guy behind him greeted him.
William pointed to himself.
"M...me?"
"Yeah, who else?" the boy replied.
"Oh… well, hello," William said.
