Chapter 27 - Cost of human blood

'So that's why he's stalking me.' Luna thought in irritation, "He wants to use me." She springs up to her feet and begins to walk away. She was free and didn't owe him anything, so there was no need for her to be sneaky with him this time. Luna was going to reject Caius's offer by simply walking away.

"The last healer in my team was killed by your friend, the villain." Caius lied; his lies stopped Luna's movement and gained her attention. The last healer in his team was actually eaten by the dungeon king. "I'm not asking you to join my team for my sake but rather for the sake of my teammates. We can't survive for long without a healer, please, Luna."

'This is what I wanted, a team where the leader actually cares for his teammates. Lucian could learn a thing or two from this guy.' Luna stopped in her thoughts and wondered if she had ever come across Caius in the dungeon, but there wasn't a single memory of him. She couldn't understand when and how Lucian had met and killed his healer because they had always moved together. Luna abandoned the thought, believing that Lucian must have gone behind her back; with his current ability, he was capable of killing anyone to survive, and that was something she could easily believe.

"If I joined your team, I'm not fighting against Lucian." Luna stated, expecting Caius to disagree, but he nodded in agreement. "Also your team and your men are not allowed to hunt him." Luna didn't want to be enemies with Lucian; just because they are no longer on the same team doesn't mean that they hadn't once been partners.

"The first time I attacked you guys was because I couldn't control myself after seeing Lucian again." Caius lied. All he needed was to get Luna back to his hideout, where two of his teammates were waiting. The others were currently searching for Lucian.

Caius planned on showing Luna who is boss when they get to his hideout; after all, she is nothing more than a simple healer with the combat ability of a child.

"Wait…" Luna was starting to realize her mistake. "It was you who attacked us first. Lucian didn't attack you?"

"Yeah, it was me."

Luna uses her palm to smack her head. "Turns out that smug bastard isn't such a bad guy after all." She let out a smile. "You know he lied when he said that anyone who killed him will gain the title of the villain; that is just his own ability, not everyone can do it." Luna felt as though she could trust Caius, believing that Caius was a man of justice who only cared about teammates and not the title of the villain.

Caius faked a surprise expression as he asked, "Why would he do something like that?" He didn't believe Luna and thought that she was only lying to him so that he could lose interest in hunting Lucian.

"For survival."

Caius's hideout was made by Marta with earth magic; it was steady and looked like a little mud hut. Luna was impressed; she was about to be introduced by Caius when a guy walked in.

"Captain, we have searched all over the forest, but we can't find the villain. I think he's dead."

'He lied.' Luna thought sharply; she felt foolish to have believed Caius.

Caius cursed under his breath and punched his men who had spoken in the face. He turned to Kane and Marta. "Grab her; don't let her escape!"

Marta was about to seal off every entrance in the hideout, but Luna acted quickly, jumping out through the window. It was small, and she sprained her ankle, but she halfway healed herself and began to run; Kane and Caius were after her.

Luna activated her hidden skill, happy that she didn't reveal that part of herself to Caius but at the same time angry with herself for betraying Lucian, because due to her wide mouth, Caius now knows the truth about Lucian's ability.

Kane was fast with his wind magic; he easily caught up to Luna, using his blade to slice through her hand.

Luna gasps in pain as she strikes the sword with Kane; all she needed was one hit. Usually she would be bothered with the thought of killing her opponent, but now that her life hangs in the balance, and Kane was more skilled with his sword than her, she wasn't bothered. Luna thought of Lucian and wondered if this was how he felt whenever he was fighting against a stronger opponent. The weakness, the desperate desire to cling to life even at the cost of human blood.

Kane's sword cut through Luna's thigh, making her leg tremble in fear and pain. She searched her memory for the training she had gotten from Lucian and then settled on something Lucian often did when he was desperate. It was crazy, but it was the only chance she had; after all, all she needed was one strike, even if it was just a scratch.

In desperate moments Lucian would sacrifice his body to the beast ability that was inside of him, a draw of his own blood to win and slay another. At that thought, Luna let her defense down and spun around, giving Kane another opportunity to cut her again with his sword, wounding her abdomen, making her bleed profusely, and believing that it was enough to weaken her. Luna didn't stop in her movement, ignoring the burning pain and dizziness she was starting to feel. She raised her sword and cut Kane over his back; it wasn't deep, but it was enough of a hit to put him down, permanently.

Kane drops dead, and Luna sheathes her sword and begins to heal herself. Caius was close by as Luna continued to run while healing herself. She didn't stop and use her magic to her advantage to improve her stamina until she finally lost Caius.

"I lost her!" Caius yelled to himself; he was tired as he headed back to his hideout. He stops when he comes across Kane's dead body and examines the wound he wasn't able to examine earlier because of his pursuit. "Poison?" He mumbled to himself, wondering how his men got killed.

'Once I find that bitch again, I'm going to kill her. I'm not letting her get away with this.' He thought back to Luna's confession about Lucian's ability; he still doubted it, but now he thought of testing it out. If her crazy confession is true, then he was going to expose Lucian to every player who was still alive.
