Though she had no memory of Ye Ming, she found herself surprisingly interested in this story from the past. Watching her other self on the livestream, it felt as if she had returned to that pure and beautiful time in her life. The battlefields of that era were filled with smoke and gunpowder, yet everyone was full of hope for the future, and everyone could still smile brightly.
But that memory, and everything with it, ended in ruin. The prosperous city was turned to scorched earth, the sun vanished, and people themselves twisted into grotesque demons. After experiencing all that, to truly love someone again would mean denying everything she had become.
The shy rejections and coy mannerisms of a young girl in love... she couldn't relate to them anymore. And yet, she knew it was the natural reaction of a pure-hearted girl. It was precisely because of all the pain that the beauty of one's youth should be cherished even more.
Seeing that version of herself on the screen, Acheron grew quiet. A young woman, all alone by Ye Ming's side... it would indeed be lonely. But getting too close... that seemed inappropriate...
Acheron's thoughts trailed off as the livestream continued.
"Miss Raiden, have some peaches," Ye Ming said, placing a few peaches that had been chilled in ice water in front of her.
"Mmm," Acheron hummed, taking a peach and biting into it. When Ye Ming still didn't mention Asagami Fuuka, she couldn't help but ask, "Ye Ming, what do you think of that girl, Asagami Fuuka?"
"Asagami Fuuka?" Ye Ming looked up, surprised by the question.
"Yes. I think she's a wonderful girl," Acheron elaborated. "She has a good figure, a lovely face, she's good with makeup, and her personality is gentle and kind. Plus, she has the courage to not be afraid of what others think, and she's very well-read. I've never even heard of a book like the Mubele Ubusan Den. By all accounts, she's an outstanding young woman." She took another bite of her peach. "So why did you reject her?"
The peach suddenly tasted bitter in her mouth.
"She is outstanding, but that doesn't mean I'm obligated to like her," Ye Ming replied truthfully. "Besides, given my situation... I don't want to hold her back."
In this world, there were many wonderful people, but happiness and excellence didn't always go hand-in-hand.
