Chapter 76 - Ch.76 Blueprints in Flesh

The sect's inner library had not been disturbed like this in decades.

Manual racks reserved for elders and sect masters were opened one after another beneath Han Ye's silent scrutiny. Dust spilled into the lamplight as ancient seals unraveled, protective arrays parted, and jade slips were lifted from shelves no ordinary disciple was ever meant to approach.

Wu Chi stood several steps behind him, watching in silence as Elder Xu selected one forbidden art after another as if he were browsing a market stall rather than uprooting the sect's deepest hierarchy.

Movement techniques.

Qi circulation methods.

"This one," Elder Xu said calmly, handing over a dark jade slip veined with silver light. "Give it to the woman in red."

Wu Chi accepted it with both hands.

"This one to the one who never blinks."

Another slip passed.

"And this one to the persistent one who refuses to break."

Wu Chi hesitated briefly before taking it as well.

When they left the sealed levels of the library, Wu Chi carried four manuals against his chest.

Not five.

The fifth remained intentionally absent.

The mountain plateau was already occupied when Elder Xu arrived.

Five figures stood evenly spaced beneath the open sky.

They did not kneel.

They did not speak.

They waited.

Elder Xu stepped into the center and let his gaze travel across each of them slowly, not measuring their cultivation, but the shape of their ambition.

"You have one week," he said evenly, "to comprehend what you are about to receive."

Wu Chi distributed the manuals.

Mei Qiao's fingers trembled with naked excitement as she accepted hers, crimson lips curving into a slow, satisfied smile.

Lin Shuyu inspected her slip with detached precision, her eyes already scanning the seal as if calculating outcomes rather than celebrating opportunity.

Xu Ren stared at his jade as if it were a miracle from the heavens, disbelief barely restrained behind widened eyes.

Gao Han took his without expression, closing his fingers around it as though claiming something that had always belonged to him.

Wu Chi stopped.

Zhou Kai stood waiting with his usual hopeful grin.

Nothing was placed into his hands.

The silence stretched.

Zhou Kai blinked once. "Did you drop mine on the way...?"

"No," Elder Xu said calmly. "You will not receive one yet."

The grin wavered for only a moment.

Then Zhou Kai bowed deeply. "Yes, Elder Xu."

"Those who succeed," Elder Xu continued, "will enter Foundation Establishment within the week. All of you have no choice but to succeed."

The statement landed heavily.

"There will be no excuses. No stagnation. No wasted potential."

He turned to Mei Qiao first.

"Your temperament is indulgence. Your movement must be deception."

Her jade slip pulsed faintly.

Phantom Silk Steps.

Then to Lin Shuyu.

"Your mind is cold. Your efficiency must be absolute."

She received a brutal Qi refinement method that sacrificed comfort for total control.

Xu Ren was granted an adaptive circulation art built around recovery through repeated failure.

Gao Han received a killing art that refined Qi through slaughter and domination.

Elder Xu's gaze returned to Zhou Kai.

"You lack foundation," he said. "So you will build it with nothing but your body and will."

Zhou Kai swallowed.

Then nodded. "I won't disappoint you."

"Training begins now."

And for the first time since they were gathered, Elder Xu remained.

.

The first three days carved flesh and spirit alike.

Mei Qiao burned through Phantom Silk Steps with frightening speed. Her teasing vanished. Her laughter disappeared. Only hunger remained as illusion after illusion collapsed beneath her feet.

Lin Shuyu trained without pause, without complaint, without visible triumph. Every circulation grew cleaner, tighter, deadlier.

Xu Ren failed again and again. Qi deviation. Collapsing breath. Violent backlash. He vomited blood twice on the second day and nearly shattered his own dantian on the third, yet returned every time with shaking limbs and stubborn resolve.

Gao Han advanced with savage speed. His Qi thickened into something corrosive within days, hostile to everything around him. He required no encouragement and accepted no correction unless it came from Elder Xu himself.

Zhou Kai suffered quietly.

Without a manual, he was forced to refine Qi through repetition alone. His circulation wavered constantly. His foundation shook with instability. He collapsed more often than anyone else.

Yet he always stood back up.

Sometimes because he was stubborn.

Sometimes because Mei Qiao mocked him when he didn't.

Wu Chi observed them all.

And Elder Xu observed Wu Chi observing them.

By the sixth night, exhaustion had crept into flesh and meridians like a slow poison. Hands shook. Breath staggered. Qi trembled on the edge of collapse.

That was when Han Ye acted.

Without warning, his Fear Qi descended.

Not in violence.

Not in domination.

Only pressure.

Enough to suffocate the mind when the body was already empty.

The plateau darkened as if the shadows themselves gained weight.

Mei Qiao collapsed immediately, sweat flooding down her spine as her illusions tore themselves apart.

Lin Shuyu's breathing hitched for the first time since training began.

Gao Han bared his teeth and resisted violently, blood running from the corner of his mouth as his brutal Qi fought the intrusion.

Xu Ren trembled violently, legs nearly giving out as terror crushed his lungs like stone, yet he did not fall.

Zhou Kai should have collapsed first.

Instead, he remained standing on sheer refusal alone.

His knees shook violently.

His breath broke into ragged fragments.

His face drained of color.

"I can't pass out here…" he rasped. "If I do… I will never find a Dao partner…"

The pressure intensified briefly.

Then receded.

All five collapsed.

Zhou Kai fell last.

And he was laughing weakly when he hit the stone.

.

By the seventh day, the changes were undeniable.

Their bodies trembled with exhaustion that went deeper than muscle. Meridians burned even in stillness. Every breath carried the dull ache of limits forced open and held there.

Elder Xu stood before them in silence for a long moment.

The wind passed over the plateau, tugging at torn sleeves and sweat-soaked robes. None of them spoke. None of them dared shift their weight.

"You have done enough," he said at last.

His voice was calm, but it weighed heavier than the pressure he had used the night before.

"This week was not to make you strong."

His gaze swept across them.

"It was to see whether you are worth making strong."

Mei Qiao lifted her head slightly, lips parted but silent.

Lin Shuyu's eyes sharpened.

Gao Han's fingers twitched.

Xu Ren forced himself to straighten.

Zhou Kai wiped sweat from his brow with a shaky grin that did not quite hide how close to collapse he still was.

"You were given manuals not to become strong immediately," Elder Xu continued, "but to prove that you can build on the power I give you."

His eyes settled on each of them in turn.

"Tomorrow, comprehension will no longer be the question."

A brief pause.

"Acceptance will."

Their breathing slowed.

Fear slipped quietly into the space between heartbeats.

"For now," he said, "you will rest. Eat. Sleep. Recover what little you can."

His gaze finally returned to Zhou Kai.

"You especially."

Zhou Kai stiffened. Then bowed deeply. "Yes, Elder Xu."

Elder Xu took a step back.

"Do not train tonight," he said. "Do not circulate Qi. Do not test yourselves."

His tone left no room for disobedience.

"If you arrive tomorrow already broken… you will not survive what comes next."

No one asked what would come next.

They did not need to.

Elder Xu turned away.

Wu Chi followed him from the plateau without a word.

Behind them, five exhausted disciples remained standing in the fading light, bodies shaking, minds racing with the same realization:

Tomorrow was not training.

Tomorrow was transformation.
