Chapter 73 - Ch.73 The First Branch

Wu Chi remained kneeling when I opened my eyes.

Three cold metal tokens lay on the stone floor before him, arranged with precise care. Beside them, wrapped in darkened cloth, rested several strands of spirit herbs still heavy with residual Qi.

His body told the rest of the story.

Torn sleeves. Dried blood at his collar. Shallow scars that had not fully faded yet. Exhaustion woven into his posture, held back only by will.

But he was kneeling.

And he had returned alive.

That alone was proof enough.

I reached forward and collected the three tokens one by one. Their weight was ordinary. Their meaning was not.

"Efficient," I said quietly.

Wu Chi's shoulders tightened for a fraction of a second.

"You completed the mission in a day,"

I looked at him directly.

"Good work."

The words were simple, but they carried more weight than any public commendation ever could.

Wu Chi exhaled once, slowly, as if something unspoken finally loosened in his chest.

I set the tokens aside and nudged the wrapped herbs back toward him with my foot.

"The herbs are yours."

His eyes flickered in surprise.

"They are part of the spoils you earned," I said. "Use them. Trade them. I don't care which."

Then I spoke the real reward.

"I will teach you Shadowless Step."

His breathing stuttered.

"You will begin learning it as soon as your body stabilizes," I added. "For now, retrieve a proper healing pill. Do not rely solely on what I gave you. The regeneration supports survival, not longevity."

"I understand, Master," he said immediately.

I turned my gaze upward, to the faint cracks in the ceiling stone.

"Tomorrow, you will select five disciples."

His head lifted slightly.

"They will not be under me," I continued. "They will be yours."

Wu Chi froze completely.

"You will choose those with potential," I said. "More importantly, choose those who do not oppose me in thought or in instinct. Their current cultivation is irrelevant. They may be strong or weak."

He swallowed once.

"I will personally oversee their training for one week," I said. "I have taken enough from the library to accelerate them beyond what this sect normally allows."

Shadowless Step.

Key combat movement fundamentals.

Survival positioning.

Formation behavior.

And if they accepted what Wu Chi now carried…

"I will offer them more," I said.

My gaze returned to him.

"But only if they accept the gift."

His eyes darkened with understanding.

"And if they refuse?"

"Then they remain ordinary."

Silence followed.

Then I added the final hook.

"If you select well… and if you lead them well…"

My tone lowered slightly.

"I will strengthen your gift."

His fingers curled slowly against the floor.

"I won't disappoint you."

"I know," I replied.

That was not encouragement.

It was expectation.

I dismissed him with a single gesture.

Wu Chi rose, bowed once, and withdrew without another word. His steps were steady despite the weight now resting inside his dantian.

The chamber returned to quiet.

I leaned back into the bed at last, allowing my muscles to finally release the tension I had been holding since his arrival.

My body was nearly recovered.

My reach, however, was only beginning.

Five more disciples.

A second layer beneath Wu Chi.

If word about the recovery of our sect spread, Cloud Valley would not remain silent for long.

Nor would the other sects.

I closed my eyes.

And for the first time since the duel, sleep claimed me before thought could fully organize itself.

The mountain was quiet.

But it would not remain so.
