Chapter 7 - Steel and the Eyes of Heaven

Dawn over House Valdrik's fortress brought no calm that morning.

The north wind descended from the icy hills and whistled between the battlements, carrying the salty scent of the sea and a metallic omen that few could ignore. In the central courtyard, where the stone floor was covered in frost, the apprentices formed a tense semicircle, watching Lord Varyn's men set up a battle dais.

Kevin and Kelvin Blizzard arrived together, shoulder to shoulder, clad in light armor of hardened leather, with steel plates at vital points. Their eyes, a blue as clear as the winter sky, reflected looks of respect and suspicion.

Barely a month had passed since they had both awakened their mana, and although they had yet to reach their full potential, rumors of their skill in the training grounds had multiplied. Not everyone in the fortress viewed it favorably. "Look who's here... fortune's favored sons," whispered one of the older apprentices, a burly man named Darvik Torrek, crossing his arms.

Kelvin stared back, his face still expressionless, but Kevin noticed his brother's jaw clenched.

They both knew that this day would be no simple exercise: Lord Varyn had called for an exhibition match to test the twins' mettle against the most skilled veterans of the house. And in the internal politics of the fortress, this match amounted to a public trial.

The Arena and the Stakes

From the dais, Garron Martrek, the master-at-arms, directed the installation of the wooden barriers that would mark the boundaries of the arena. He was a burly man with a graying beard and a booming voice that rose above the murmur of those present.

"Today we shall see what these young men's steel is made of." And don't forget," he said, turning to the rest of the apprentices, "there is no room for luck here, only for technique and courage."

Lord Varyn Valdrik watched from the top of the gallery, accompanied by a few captains and councilors. His hands rested on the edge of the railing, and his gray eyes, cold as the stone walls, remained impassive.

At the edges of the arena, murmurs and hidden bets stirred. Some veterans claimed the twins would last less than ten minutes; others, that at least one would fall unconscious before the fight was over.

First Blood

The blast of the horn signaled the beginning.

Facing Kevin and Kelvin stood Darvik Torrek and Sareth Veynar, two veterans hardened by patrols against hill bandits and swamp beasts. Armed with longswords and shields, they advanced with a firm stride.

Kevin was the first to move, twisting his shortsword at a low angle to test Darvik's defense. The metallic clash resounded. But the veteran barely gave ground. Kelvin, meanwhile, dodged a downward blow from Sareth and countered with a side slash that forced the veteran back two steps.

The fight wasn't just about strength. Every thrust, every feint, was also a message:

"We are not here to be tested, but to prove that we have already passed the test."

Political Pressure

From the gallery, one of the captains whispered something in Lord Varyn's ear, but the lord didn't respond. His gaze remained fixed on the rhythm of the twins' movements, assessing not only their skill, but also how they complemented each other. House Valdrik didn't need isolated warriors: it needed swords that moved as one.

In the courtyard, some of the younger apprentices began to cheer quietly whenever one of the twins landed a sure blow. Others, closer to the veterans, murmured about "staged displays" and favoritism.

The Twins' Synchronicity

Midway through the fight, Darvik managed to strike Kevin's side with the edge of his shield, staggering him. Sareth took advantage to charge at Kelvin, but the twins' movement was almost instinctive: Kevin spun toward his brother, blocking the attack with the flat of his sword, while Kelvin took advantage of the distraction to lunge at Darvik's thigh.

The impact made the veteran flinch. It was then that Kelvin, with a spark of blue mana running along the edge of his weapon, executed a feint that left Sareth exposed. Kevin finished with a clean slash that connected with the veteran's shoulder.

The crowd erupted in exclamations. The weapons master did not intervene.

He let the fight continue, because what he saw in the arena was unusual: two swords moving as if sharing a single thought.

The Outcome

Finally, after a fierce exchange that left shields shattered and blows echoing in the chests of armor, Garron Martrek raised his hand and declared the fight over.

"Enough." His voice echoed in the courtyard. "The twins have proven they can take on the finest of this house... and still remain standing."

Lord Varyn watched from above. He didn't smile, but the gleam in his eyes was enough to silence the murmurs.

The twins, panting, exchanged a glance. They knew it wasn't a definitive victory, but it was a step that solidified their position.

In the stone halls and in the barracks, this battle would be talked about for weeks.

And though it was still a long way off before the entire North knew them, it was clear in House Valdrik that Kevin and Kelvin Blizzard were not just apprentices... but candidates to become the deadliest swords under the banner of the winged wolf.
