Chapter 10 - Fragile trust

The rooftop was quiet except for the occasional rustle of leaves stirred by the night breeze. Liora and Mara sat close, their shoulders almost touching, sharing the fragile space between familiarity and something new.

Liora's thoughts swirled like the mist rising from the city below. Trust had always been a delicate thing for her, something easy to break and harder still to rebuild. Yet, here with Mara, it felt different — tentative, yes, but with an undercurrent of hope.

"Do you ever worry about being hurt?" Liora asked, her voice soft but steady.

Mara's gaze met hers without hesitation. "Every day. But I've learned that to protect ourselves completely is to close off the chance for connection. It's a risk — but it's one I want to take."

Liora nodded slowly, absorbing the words. "I want that too. But sometimes, I wonder if I'm strong enough."

"You are," Mara said simply, her voice like a warm anchor in the cool night air.

The vulnerability between them grew, unspoken but undeniable. Mara reached out and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Liora's ear, her touch gentle and careful as if she were handling something precious.

Liora's breath caught, the intimacy of the gesture settling deep inside her. For years, she had been hiding parts of herself, afraid to let anyone in. But with Mara, the walls she'd built began to crumble, brick by brick.

"I don't know what this is yet," Liora admitted, her eyes searching Mara's face, "but I want to understand it — with you."

Mara smiled, a light blooming in her eyes. "We'll figure it out together."

The night stretched on, filled with quiet conversations and comfortable silences. The city lights twinkled below like distant promises, and above them, the stars blinked softly — witnesses to the fragile trust forming between two souls.

As Liora looked at Mara, she felt a stirring inside her — a mix of fear and excitement, uncertainty and longing. The path ahead was unknown, but for the first time, she was willing to walk it.

Hand in hand, beneath the vast night sky, they took their first steps towa

rd something real.
