"Is that your spoils of war?"
Yukinoshita Yukino said venomously.
Watching Kisaragi Rin put away the white cloth, she felt her safety was greatly threatened.
Facing Yukinoshita Yukino, Kisaragi Rin didn't speak, he just flexed his muscles.
Yukinoshita Yukino glanced at her own flat chest and felt her vision go dark. Kisaragi Rin seemed to have said nothing, yet he seemed to have said everything.
"Haha."
Hachiman Hikigaya quickly covered his mouth, he had accidentally laughed out loud.
Unfortunately, it was too late. Yukinoshita Yukino shifted her target of hatred.
"Has Hikigaya not finished clearing his mind yet?"
Hachiman Hikigaya: "…"
Kisaragi Rin sat down at ease to enjoy his bento. The taste was excellent, and the texture was more perfect than anything he had eaten before.
It was probably Shiina Mahiru > Busujima Saeko > Kato Megumi > ordinary home-cooked meals.
——
Afternoon classes ended, and Kisaragi Rin originally planned to go home, but Yukinoshita Yukino called him back, saying it was the Service Club's first club activity.
"Why are Hikigaya and Kisaragi Rin here too?!"
The person who spoke was Yuigahama Yui, Hachiman Hikigaya's classmate.
Her short pink hair was tied into a bun on one side, looking very cute. Her figure, however, was at a level Yukinoshita Yukino could never reach.
Her request was to make cookies by hand to give to someone.
But due to her poor cooking skills, and not wanting to tell her friends about it, Hiratsuka-sensei had introduced her to the Service Club.
According to her, Hiratsuka-sensei told her that the Service Club was a place where wishes could come true.
"If I'm not needed, then I'll be leaving."
Kisaragi Rin yawned and said indifferently.
If he wasn't mistaken, her purpose in making cookies was to give them to Hachiman Hikigaya, because Hachiman Hikigaya had once saved her dog, and had been hit by a car and injured his leg as a result.
The key was that the food Yuigahama Yui made was extremely unpalatable.
"Eh, I don't mean to dislike Kisaragi Rin, it's just, it's just…"
Yuigahama Yui fidgeted, worried that Kisaragi Rin would misunderstand, yet also considering something else, not wanting to state the reason.
Hachiman Hikigaya blinked his dead fish eyes beside her and said to Yukinoshita Yukino, the person involved: "I can't make cookies, can I leave first?"
"To change a distorted personality, evasion won't do, Hikigaya. Later, you can do the taste-testing."
"Kisaragi Rin, you too."
Yukinoshita Yukino said mercilessly.
She was still a bit resentful of Kisaragi Rin's actions that morning.
"What a strange relationship…"
Yuigahama Yui observed secretly from the side, thinking to herself.
Eventually, they all went to the cooking classroom.
This was where cooking classes were held. Most of the things that could be used were available here; you just had to clean up after using them.
Yukinoshita Yukino helped Yuigahama Yui put on an apron.
Yukinoshita Yukino demonstrated it to her first.
She planned to teach Yuigahama Yui a simple method.
Prepare softened butter, powdered sugar, egg yolk liquid, and cake flour. Soften the butter, then add powdered sugar and mix well. Add the egg liquid, beat until fluffy, then add the flour. Once shaped, it can be put into the oven to bake and wait for it to come out.
The method Yukinoshita Yukino taught was flawless, and the cookies she baked herself were quite tempting.
Logically speaking, as long as one followed the standards normally, even if they weren't incredibly delicious, they would at least be edible.
But when it was Yuigahama Yui's turn to try, an accident occurred.
As she haphazardly added ingredients with her wild ideas, the cookies she made successfully turned into charcoal.
This batch of freshly baked cookies changed hands several times, finally landing in front of Hachiman Hikigaya.
"It's like charcoal. Am I supposed to be taste-testing poison?"
Hachiman Hikigaya held the plate; the pitch-black cookies looked completely unappetizing.
"She has a great talent for being a witch."
Kisaragi Rin observed Yuigahama Yui's baking method and came to a conclusion.
"How could it be poisonous! Calling me a witch is too much!"
Yuigahama Yui retorted, looking at her own cookies, which looked more and more like poisonous mushrooms, and said self-doubtfully, "Is it poisonous after all?"
"Why can you make so many mistakes?"
Yukinoshita Yukino picked up a piece of charcoal and asked.
"Think about where improvements can be made."
She threw away the plate of charcoal, intending to teach her again seriously.
"As I see it, just don't let Yuigahama Yui do anything."
Hachiman Hikigaya said unceremoniously.
"How can you solve problems like that?!"
Yuigahama Yui said discontentedly, but quickly deflated, looking at the charcoal that Kisaragi Rin wouldn't even touch, and said, "Am I really not suited for cooking? Should I say talent? Anyway, I don't have it."
Yukinoshita Yukino replied while sifting flour.
"The only solution is effort."
"Yuigahama Yui, you just said you don't have talent, right? You need to abandon that idea. People who don't even try the most basic effort aren't qualified to envy talented people."
"Those who don't succeed are precisely because they cannot imagine the effort successful people put in, which is why they cannot succeed."
"But, these days, no one does it by hand anymore. It feels like doing this kind of thing isn't fitting in."
Yuigahama Yui said, twirling her hair. This was precisely why she didn't want to tell her friends and came to the Service Club alone to solve the problem.
These words were particularly jarring to Yukinoshita Yukino's ears. She stopped sifting flour, turned around, and said, "Could you please abandon this approach of trying to conform to your surroundings? It displeases me greatly. Don't you feel ashamed to blame your clumsiness and ugliness on others?"
But effort doesn't necessarily lead to success, and not making an effort is definitely comfortable. Kisaragi Rin thought to himself, but didn't say it out loud to annoy Yukinoshita Yukino.
Yukinoshita Yukino had already prepared for Yuigahama Yui to dislike her. This was her; even knowing others wouldn't like to hear it, she would still say it.
Unfortunately, Yuigahama Yui's thought process was indeed different from ordinary people.
She looked at Yukinoshita Yukino, her eyes sparkling, and praised, "So cool!"
"Yukinoshita Yukino not speaking superficially, that's really cool."
This statement indeed stunned both Yukinoshita Yukino and Hachiman Hikigaya.
Kisaragi Rin rested his chin in his hand, feeling that Yuigahama Yui had a somewhat naive cuteness; this personality was practically Yukinoshita Yukino's natural enemy.
"I'll work hard to make delicious cookies!"
Yuigahama Yui said, cheering herself on.
Unfortunately, Yuigahama Yui was indeed an idiot.
…
"Redo!"
…
"Redo!"
…
"Still redo!"
"Wait a minute, Yukinoshita Yukino, at least pay attention to others."
After the fourth batch of cookies was done, Kisaragi Rin reluctantly spoke up to stop the increasingly cold-faced Yukinoshita Yukino.
Yukinoshita Yukino glanced at Yuigahama Yui beside her.
She had recovered from the motivational talk, and after redoing it several times in a row, her hands were trembling as she poured the powdered sugar.
Yukinoshita Yukino's teaching tone became increasingly stern, and Yuigahama Yui trembled, but dared not interrupt Yukinoshita Yukino's instruction.
Hachiman Hikigaya's task of taste-testing was equally arduous; the previous batch of cookies still hadn't been eaten.
"Sorry, I was too impatient. Let's take it slow."
Yukinoshita Yukino took a deep breath, calmed down, and said placidly.
"If it were me, I'd be anxious with her too."
Kisaragi Rin complained, "Is it too much that there's still no improvement after the fourth redo? Were your hands spat on by the Kitchen God?"
It was only because making cookies was relatively quick that it wasn't past five o'clock yet, otherwise Kisaragi Rin would definitely have gone home.
"Yuigahama Yui, your request is to make cookies by hand, not to learn how to make cookies, right?"
"That's right."
Yuigahama Yui tilted her head, not knowing what Kisaragi Rin meant.
"Since you don't need to learn, then Yukinoshita Yukino can do one step, and you follow one step, wouldn't that work? If you don't understand the problem, can't you at least copy the homework?"
Kisaragi Rin stated his solution.
Yukinoshita Yukino frowned and retorted, "How is that different from cheating? If she makes it this time, she still won't know how next time."
"Don't be too serious, Yukinoshita Yukino. Yuigahama Yui just wants to make one. What happens later is for later. We are just fulfilling this request."
Kisaragi Rin gestured for Yukinoshita Yukino to look at Yuigahama Yui. She was smiling foolishly, clearly tempted by Kisaragi Rin's suggestion.
Yukinoshita Yukino finally acquiesced to this method.
Under the strict supervision of the three, Yuigahama Yui was not allowed to do anything extra, following Yukinoshita Yukino's actions one-to-one throughout the process.
"It's a success!"
Yuigahama Yui joyfully distributed the cookies for them to taste.
"It's edible, for sure."
Hachiman Hikigaya concluded, feeling that he wouldn't want to eat cookies for the next week.
"Edible is enough," Kisaragi Rin tasted a piece. Although it was made with the same steps, the taste was still not as good as Yukinoshita Yukino's. How strange.
"Then I declare the first club request successfully completed."
