Chapter 29 - THE SILENT CITY

With the Truth-Stone in hand, the heroes emerged from the Chamber of Whispers, blinking as the familiar world of falsehoods came into view. The trees still hissed their lies, and the ground still promised betrayal, but the stone in Arthur's hand hummed with a low, steady energy, acting as a shield against the magical chaos. It didn't silence the whispers, but it made them feel distant and hollow, like echoes in a forgotten hall.

"We have what we came for," Elias said, his eyes on the stone. "The Oracle's greatest weapon against us is doubt. This will be her undoing."

Their journey back to the city was uneventful, thanks to the stone's protective aura. They walked through a world of illusions, but for the first time, they were seeing them for what they were: empty shells. The terrifying beasts that once haunted their path were now revealed as harmless animals, and the treacherous chasms were merely shallow streams. The city, however, was a different story.

From the hill overlooking the city, it looked eerily calm. The familiar hum of life was gone, replaced by a profound silence. As they drew closer, they saw why. The city wasn't abandoned; it was frozen. People stood in the middle of streets, mid-conversation, their faces fixed in expressions of fear or joy. Children were poised in mid-run, their laughter silenced. It was as if the Oracle had paused time itself, a final, desperate act to prevent the truth from spreading.

"This is her last stand," Seraphina said, her hand on a frozen merchant's shoulder. "She's trying to keep her lies from being exposed by stopping all communication. Without the ability to speak or act, people can't share the truth."

Gabriel drew his sword, his face grim. "So we have to unfreeze them. But how? We can't just smash the stone against them."

Arthur held up the Truth-Stone. "The stone doesn't destroy the lies," he explained. "It reveals the truth. Her magic has woven a web of deceit over the entire city, and the silence is just a part of it. We need to find the heart of her magic, the place where all the lies converge."

Lyra pointed to the city's central square, where a massive, crystalline tower, previously hidden by a powerful illusion, now shimmered into view. It pulsed with a dark energy, radiating a magical silence that seemed to press down on everything.

"That's it," she said. "That's the source. The Heart of Lies."

As they began their descent into the city, they knew this was the final act. They would have to navigate a labyrinth of frozen people, knowing that any mistake could mean becoming a part of the tableau themselves. They had the Truth-Stone, and they had each other. But they were about to face the Oracle of Lies in her own domain, and she had one last trick up her sleeve. The city might be silent, but the whispers in their minds, now a memory, were nothing compared to the lies that waited for them inside the crystalline tower.
