Sapphire P.O.V
The following week after I confronted my boss regarding my sister was normal except that Mr. Giovanni is stricter and more nitpicky than usual, but I managed to professionally do the task that he has set out for me, while trying to make as little mistake as I could. Besides that, this week passed by normally.
Today Beth wants to go grab dinner with her friends from work, as it is a Friday night. She also wants to enjoy and let loose a little bit for the night after her busy week at work. But I made sure to make her promise to call me when she is finish with her dinner so that I can come to pick her up instead of her taking a cab.
Since the last incident that happen, I prefer to be sure that she does not go home by herself. She swore that she was going to call me since she is going to drink alcohol tonight. She is also staying at my house tonight because she doesn't want to come home to an empty house after drinking.
Today I decided to walk to the little café that was just a block away from my house as I wait for Beth to call me to pick her up. So, I got ready then left the house making sure I locked the door before I start walking to the café. As I was walking, I enjoyed the slight breeze, taking in the calm night scene until I reach the entrance of the café.
As soon as I open the door, I hear the chime of the bell that indicate a new customer has arrived. I made my way to the cash register and order a hot chocolate and a croissant. Then after I paid for my order, I went and choose a seat by the window so that I can enjoy the view while I enjoy my snack.
My order came a few minutes after I sat down, and after the waitress made sure I have everything that was ordered she left saying to enjoy my drink and croissant. I said thank you and cut a little bit of the croissant with the fork and knife that the waitress provided, then putting it in my mouth.
I savored the taste of the croissant, but the croissant reminds me of my mom's cooking back at my parent's house because my mom cooks the best food, I have ever had the privilege to consume. I don't know how but the food that my mom cooks are always so tasty that I ate until I my stomach felt like it would burst.
The only reason I'm not fat is because every day I make sure to exercise at least for an hour. If I don't do this, I would have been overweight growing up with the way my mom cooks. And thinking of my mom and my home growing up makes me thinks about my missing sister. Now a days I think about my only sister more often than before.
She is consistently on my mind every day. I think about the happy memories I had with her growing up and how she told me that she wants to leave the house and go on an adventure. She was quite outgoing and very adventurous growing up and she would not let our parents dictate how to live her life.
When she finished school, our parents plan to have her engaged to this rich gentleman from our neighborhood and get married soon after. Let's just say when she found out about it, she was mad.
She has big dreams of living in the big city and getting a job there, so soon after that big argument with our parents she went missing and we never saw her again. When my parents realize she was missing, they were so worried about her that they look everywhere in our neighborhood but could not find her.
My mother worried herself sick wondering if Ruby was ok or not. I got quite mad at my sister for her selfish act of running away from her problems and making her own parents worried about her. But as time goes by, I kind of understand why she did what she did.
Our dad should not have forced her to marry someone she was not interested in, but Ruby should have also tried talk to our dad about her dreams and convince him that this is what she wants to do and made a compromise that both sides could agree on.
But I guess that night she must have thought that running away from home is the only solution. But, because of her actions my parents are more lenient with me wanting to find a job and supporting myself instead of getting married and be a housewife.
Even though I have no intention of running away from home even if they did not allow me to work at the big city. My sister and I are not that close to our dad thanks to our strict upbringing, and it didn't help that he was quite stubborn in getting his way, so now I only call mom to keep in touch with her but I haven't been visiting them as often as I should.
As I thought this, I started remembering the night that Ruby ran away from home, as clear as if it happened yesterday. There were a lot of shouting and screaming and it was the first time, I have heard my dad shouting as the most he does is raised his voice when scolding us. So, it was quite noisy that evening that I'm sure even our neighbors heard us.
That day started like any other ordinary day.
#Flash Back#
At last! School is finish, I thought as the final bell rang to signal the end of the school day. I quickly got out of my seat as soon as the teacher finish speaking and made a beeline to the front of the school and began my short walk back to my house.Today was a torture because of the entire extra-long boring lectures that was supposed to prepare us for the upcoming exams.
I have trouble studying like that as I have the tendency to fall asleep halfway through the lecture. I needed to my notes to be as creative as possible so that it will help me in memorizing the content.
I shook my head to clear my thoughts from my studies once I reached home. I took out my keys from my skirt pocket and open the door shouting "I'm home!" My mom answered to go upstairs to shower and then come down to have lunch. I said yes then made my way to my room upstairs to take a quick shower then choosing a comfy pants and an old worn t-shirt.
After I was dressed, I walk down to the kitchen lured by the aroma of the delicious food that my mom cooked.I'm not exaggerating when I say my mom makes the best spaghetti as well as egg sandwich. I don't know what she puts in the food, but it smells and taste excellent! "Hi mom," I said kissing her cheeks.
"Oh! Hi dear! Have a sit and have a drink first while we wait for your dad and sister," she said while going around making sure all the food is ready. "Alright!" I said while pouring myself an apple juice that was in the fridge.
A few minutes later Ruby and dad walk into the dining room and sat down at the table with my dad sitting in front of Ruby and Ruby sitting beside me on my right and our mom sitting beside my dad, which is in front of me.
Once everyone settles down, we began to eat and made small banter about what happened to us today.Whendad coughs into in hands to get our attention and the conversation stops after a few seconds, and we all look at my dad. He clears his throat before he began speaking.
"Ruby, we have some good news for you," he said in an even tone while looking at my sister. "What is it," Ruby said a little wary.
"After some searching, your mom and I have found the most suitable candidate as your future husband," his voice remained even. A tone that says it is not up for debate. My sister was shocked at the news that it took her few seconds to process before she was able to speak and when she did speak, she was angry.
"And you didn't even think to ask me if I was ok with it." She was barely able to keep from raising her voice at our parents.
I felt bad for her right now because she told me before that she was going to tell our parents about her dreams of going to the big city and getting a job there and she knows if she gets married, she has no choice but to stay home and be a housewife.
"Ruby, we are only thinking of what is best for you," mom told her in calm voice. "What's best for me," Ruby scoffs. "I know what's best for me and I know marrying someone I barely know will not make me happy," her voice shook with her barely controlling her anger and feeling of betrayal.
"Sapphire. Go to your room. Me, your mom and sister have something to discuss," dad ordered me in a stern voice. I just nodded my head to scared to say anything and got up from my chair, took my plate and glass went to the kitchen, put the plate and glass in the dishwasher, then left the kitchen to head to my room.
As soon as I reach my bedroom and close the door, I hear shouting coming from the dining room. This is the first time I hear my dad shouting as my mom tries to calm him down. I feel bad for my sister, as she is being forced to do something she despises, and I can only pray that my parents will hear my sister out and see things from her point of view.
Hopefully they can find the middle ground for this situation and not let their emotions run wild and end up saying something they will regret.
My sister and parents were fighting for almost half an hour before I hear someone stomping by my door and then I hear a loud door slam that came from my sister's room. I wanted to go and ask her what happened and if she needed someone to talk about it, but then I thought that she needed her space after arguing with our parents and she must be fuming right now, so I stayed in my room.
I didn't know how much I would regret my decision later on.
