Chapter 6 - 4

The subtle shift in the clinic wasn't immediately obvious to Jiang Xiaoshuai, but it was to Guo Chengyu. He hadn't just not visited; he'd been watching. Li Wang's reports, usually dry and factual, had taken on an interesting turn: a young man, seemingly a transient, now living in the clinic's backyard. Chengyu hadn't liked it one bit.

So, when the bell above the clinic door chimed late one afternoon, a full nine days since Chengyu's last visit, Jiang Xiaoshuai nearly dropped the patient chart he was holding.

Guo Chengyu stood in the doorway, framed by the setting sun, looking impossibly sharp in a charcoal suit. His gaze swept over the waiting room, not missing the slightly rumpled figure of Wu Suowei, who was patiently reading an old magazine.

"Doctor Jiang," Chengyu's voice was a low purr, a sound Xiaoshuai had grudgingly become accustomed to. But today, there was an edge to it, like silk stretched taut over steel. "My apologies for my absence. Business, you understand. Highly demanding." He took a slow, deliberate step into the clinic, his eyes still fixed on Wu Suowei.

Xiaoshuai's heart hammered against his ribs. He felt a wave of inexplicable defensiveness rise within him. "Mr. Guo," he replied, trying to keep his voice steady. "I assume you have a medical concern today?"

Chengyu finally turned his full attention to Xiaoshuai, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "Always, Doctor. I've found myself in need of your... particular expertise. But it seems you've acquired a new patient, or perhaps... a new guest?" His eyes flickered back to Wu Suowei, who, sensing the tension, looked up nervously from his magazine.

"This is Wu Suowei," Xiaoshuai introduced, trying to project a sense of normalcy. "He's recovering from an injury. He's staying here temporarily."

Chengyu nodded slowly, his smile not quite reaching his eyes. He walked over to Wu Suowei, who involuntarily stiffened. Chengyu extended a hand, and Wu Suowei hesitantly shook it. Chengyu's grip was firm, almost crushing.

"Wu Suowei," Chengyu repeated, his voice deceptively smooth. "I hope Doctor Jiang is taking good care of you. He has a habit of being overly kind, sometimes to his own detriment." His gaze was unreadable as he held Wu Suowei's eyes for a moment longer than necessary. Wu Suowei looked distinctly uncomfortable.

"He's very kind," Wu Suowei managed, pulling his hand back.

Chengyu turned back to Xiaoshuai, his smile now fully back, but with an underlying possessiveness that sent a shiver down Xiaoshuai's spine. "Indeed. Perhaps too kind. Now, Doctor, about my peculiar ailment. I believe it requires your undivided attention. Shall we go to your office?"

He didn't wait for an answer, turning and heading straight for the examination room, his steps deliberate and confident. Xiaoshuai, feeling caught between a rock and a very hard place, could only follow, acutely aware of Wu Suowei's bewildered stare and the unsettling aura Chengyu had brought back into his quiet clinic.
