Chapter 5 - The uncle who betrayed the crown

The forest became completely silent.

Even the wind seemed afraid to move.

Kael stared at the stranger standing before him.

The man's face carried the pride of royalty, but his eyes held something darker. Something cold and dangerous.

"Hello, nephew."

The word echoed in Kael's mind.

Nephew.

He looked at Seraphina, waiting for her to deny it.

But the old woman remained silent.

And that silence told him everything.

"Who is he?" Kael asked.

Seraphina tightened her grip on her staff.

"His name is Lord Valen Arwyn."

Kael's eyes widened.

"Arwyn?"

The stranger smiled.

"Yes. Your family name."

Kael stepped back.

"But that is impossible. The royal family..."

"Wiped out?" Valen finished.

His smile grew.

"That is what everyone believed."

Arven moved forward, his sword ready.

"You should have remained buried with the past, Valen."

The man's expression changed.

"You still blame me, old friend?"

"Friend?" Arven said bitterly. "You destroyed everything we protected."

Kael looked between them.

"Someone explain what is happening."

Seraphina looked at him sadly.

"Valen was your father's younger brother."

Kael stared at his uncle.

"My uncle?"

Valen laughed softly.

"You sound disappointed."

"I don't even know who you are."

"And that is because they made sure you never knew."

Kael's hand began glowing.

The echoes returned.

Whispers filled his mind.

Memories that did not belong to him.

A young Valen standing inside the royal palace.

A conversation between two brothers.

A throne.

A betrayal.

Kael fell silent as the vision disappeared.

"You saw it, didn't you?" Valen asked.

Kael looked at him.

"You betrayed your own brother."

Valen's smile faded.

"That is the story they told you."

"Then tell me the truth."

For a moment, the villainous expression disappeared from Valen's face.

"I wanted to save Elysium."

Everyone became silent.

"You expect me to believe that?" Arven shouted.

Valen looked at him.

"You saw what happened. The kingdom was dying. The magic was fading. The old ways were destroying us."

"You chose darkness," Seraphina said.

"I chose survival."

The words carried pain.

Valen stepped closer.

"Your father refused to use the Echo Crystal's full power. He believed protecting the past was more important than saving the future."

Kael frowned.

"And you disagreed."

"I watched our people suffer while he protected an ancient tradition."

The forest grew colder.

"So I searched for another source of power."

Seraphina's expression hardened.

"The Shadowborn."

Valen did not deny it.

"They offered what Elysium needed."

"They destroyed it!" Arven shouted.

"They transformed it."

Valen looked at Kael.

"And now you have awakened the power that was supposed to belong to me."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"My power?"

"The echoes."

Valen smiled.

"The ability to connect with every soul that has ever carried the magic of Elysium."

Kael clenched his fist.

"You wanted it."

"I deserved it."

The words were filled with anger.

"I was the second son. The one who stood beside the throne but never sat upon it. Your father was chosen by the Echo Crystal, and I was forgotten."

Kael understood then.

This was not only about power.

It was about jealousy.

"You destroyed thousands of lives because you felt ignored?"

Valen's eyes darkened.

"You are too young to understand the weight of a crown."

Kael stepped forward.

"And you are too blind to understand what a crown means."

Everyone looked at him.

Kael continued.

"A crown is not about being chosen. It is about protecting those who depend on you."

For the first time, Valen looked surprised.

Then he laughed.

"You truly sound like your father."

The sky suddenly darkened.

A wave of black energy spread through the forest.

The Shadowborn appeared behind Valen.

Arven raised his sword.

"He brought an army."

Valen looked at Kael.

"I did not come here to kill you."

Kael remained cautious.

"Then why?"

"To give you a choice."

The ground shook.

"Elysium is falling again. The darkness is returning. You can either join me and rebuild this kingdom..."

Valen extended his hand.

"Or you can watch it disappear forever."

Kael stared at the offered hand.

A part of him wanted answers.

A part of him wanted to know more about his family.

But another part remembered the ruined villages.

The lost souls.

The pain caused by darkness.

He stepped away.

"I will never follow someone who destroys what they claim to save."

Valen's expression turned cold.

"Then you have chosen your fate."

The Shadowborn began moving.

Seraphina raised her staff.

"Kael, we need to leave!"

But before they could escape, Valen whispered something.

Something only Kael could hear.

"Ask Seraphina what happened the night you were born."

Kael froze.

"What?"

But Valen was already disappearing into the darkness.

The creatures vanished with him.

The forest returned to silence.

Kael turned slowly toward Seraphina.

"What was he talking about?"

The old woman looked away.

"Kael..."

"No."

His voice became firm.

"Not another secret."

Seraphina closed her eyes.

"You deserve the truth."

A painful silence followed.

"The night you were born..."

She hesitated.

"Your mother made a sacrifice."

Kael's heart stopped.

"My mother?"

Seraphina nodded.

"She gave up her life to protect you."

The echoes inside Kael became louder.

A woman's voice.

A final whisper.

"My son..."

Kael touched his glowing mark.

For the first time, he heard his mother's voice.

And he realized the greatest mystery of Elysium had only begun.

To be continued...
