Rachel woke up to complete quiet. For a second, she let herself wish it was just a normal day, no bright cameras, no loud social media reporter, no rumours that could ruin everything she had made.
But as she turned over, the phone on her bedside table blinked like it was alive, with many new messages piled up.
She didn't look at them. Not today.
Instead, she got out of bed, put her robe on, and quietly walked to the kitchen. David was still sleeping, lying sideways on his small bed like he had been fighting dragons in his sleep.
She didn't want him to find out or be troubled by what everyone outside what saying, not about the stories. Not about the trouble that followed them home after Father's Day.
Rachel took the morning newspaper from the door and hid it far back in the cabinet before he could see it. She turned off the TV, even unplugged it to be safe, and made herself start making breakfast.
