Rachel was trembling as she called the police department. The phone call seemed unreal, her voice firm but her heart pounding with fear as she told them about the break-in. About twenty minutes later, two officers came, their radios noisy as they walked into the mess that used to be her safe place.
The apartment seemed like a violent storm had hit it drawers were open, cushions were cut apart, clothes and papers were all over the floor like fallen leaves.
David held onto Rachel's skirt, his eyes big and scared. "Mommy, what's happening? Who did this? Will they come back?
Rachel had been too shocked by the view in front of her, that she forgot how terrified David must have been feeling.
Rachel quickly knelt down, holding him tightly. "No, honey. They will not come back. I promise." She kissed his head, but her own heart was beating fast.
What if they were still here? What if David was by himself? The thought made her feel very scared.
