It began with a smell.

Not strong — faint, almost hidden beneath the usual mix of roasted lamb, sweet wine, and the incense Rhaezar favored in his private chambers.

Alex caught it the moment he stepped through the door.

Bitter almond.

Most men wouldn't have noticed.

Most men didn't have Pack Instinct layered with Silent Focus — a combination that had turned the smallest sensory details into warning bells.

And in Pentos, bitter almond meant one thing.

Poison.

A Strange Assignment

That morning, Rhaezar's steward had brought Alex a sealed pouch with instructions: deliver it to the Magister in his private dining room at sunset. The Magister rarely summoned him during meals — it was unusual enough to make Alex cautious.

Now, as he stood in the wide marble-floored room with tapestries drawn against the evening chill, he could feel the tension behind the pleasantries.

Two guards flanked the door, their eyes sharp but unfocused — professional, but not expecting trouble. The Magister sat at the far end of a long table, already halfway through a plate of seared duck glazed in honey and spice.

"Alex," Rhaezar said with a small nod, "come. Sit."

Alex obeyed, taking the chair two seats away, close enough to speak without raising his voice but far enough to keep movement options open. His gaze slid over the table — the wine, the silver utensils, the small bowl of fig preserves.

And the chalice at Rhaezar's right hand.

The Tell

Rhaezar took a sip and set the cup down. Alex's Pack Instinct tightened, his sense of threat sharp as a drawn blade. Something in the way the Magister's hand lingered a half second too long, his movements slower than usual.

Alex spoke lightly, "You've had better wine."

Rhaezar's brow rose. "Have I?"

Alex leaned back, letting his eyes drift toward the chalice. "Or perhaps a better taster."

The Magister didn't laugh. That told Alex he wasn't wrong.

The Warning

"What do you know?" Rhaezar asked quietly.

"Enough to see the color in your cheeks has dropped since I walked in," Alex said. "Your hands are cooling, and you're breathing slower."

The guards shifted slightly, but Rhaezar lifted a hand to keep them still.

System Passive – Lie Detection

Rhaezar's voice: no deception. But he was withholding something.

The Magister studied Alex for a long moment before speaking again.

"You're correct. And if you wish to earn more than coin from me, you'll handle the matter… before dessert."

The Setup

Alex didn't need more explanation. Whoever had poisoned the chalice would likely try to confirm the kill before the night was out. If Alex could catch them in the act — better yet, alive — Rhaezar would owe him far more than gold.

But he needed an edge. A tool to deal with an assassin before they could act.

That was when he remembered the traveling menagerie docked at the Blue Docks two days ago. The gossip among the dockhands had been absurd — claims of manticores, wyverns, and a basilisk.

Most such creatures were exaggerations. But Alex had learned long ago that even a tamed or half-bred specimen could hold dangerous traits worth copying.

The Menagerie

It took him less than an hour to reach the dockside tents. The menagerie's keeper was a squat man with a smile too wide for his face, charging a copper per look. Alex paid for a "private" tour under the pretense of assessing animals for a potential buyer.

He ignored the hissing vipers, the mangy cats, even the chained wyvern whose wings looked clipped.

And then he saw it.

A squat reptile, its scales a mottled green-brown, eyes like molten gold. The basilisk — smaller than the legends claimed, but with an intensity that made the hair on Alex's neck rise.

The keeper laughed nervously. "Careful with that one. Its gaze won't kill you, but…" He tapped the side of his own neck. "…it'll lock every muscle in your body for hours."

Alex's mind lit up.

Alex paid another copper to linger, locking the creature's eyes until the system chimed completion.

The Stakeout

Back at the estate, Alex positioned himself in the shadows near the Magister's study — the room adjacent to the dining hall. He knew the poisoner would try to strike quickly, before the symptoms escalated too far.

Half an hour passed. Then a sound — the faint click of the side door opening.

A man slipped inside, lean and quick, dressed in servant's garb. His steps were silent. Too silent for a true servant.

The intruder moved to the study desk, pulling a small vial from his belt.

Alex stepped from the shadows.

The man froze, then spun — a dagger flashing in his hand.

The Gaze

Alex didn't speak. He didn't lunge.

He met the man's eyes.

The effect was instant. The intruder's body locked mid-motion, the dagger falling from stiff fingers. His eyes were wide, pupils constricting, every muscle straining against the paralysis.

Alex moved in calmly, kicking the dagger aside.

Venomous Gaze Cooldown Initiated – 2 hours

"You're going to answer questions," Alex said quietly. "And you're going to do it honestly. Because if you don't, I'll make sure the next thing you feel is steel."

The man couldn't move his mouth yet, but the fear in his eyes was enough.

The Interrogation

When the paralysis wore off enough for speech, Alex sat him in a chair and pressed for answers. The man cracked quickly — he was paid by one of Rhaezar's rivals, Magister Ulthos Veynar, to ensure the poison did its work and to finish the job if it didn't.

Names, drop points, payment amounts — Alex got them all.

The Presentation

Alex brought the man — bound and gagged — into the dining room himself. Rhaezar was still seated, pale but steady, his guards tense.

"This is your problem," Alex said, dropping the would-be killer at his feet.

Rhaezar's gaze sharpened. "And the solution?"

Alex smiled faintly. "Handled. Permanently, if you wish."

The Magister waved a hand, and the guards dragged the man away.

The Reward

Rhaezar reached into his coat and tossed Alex a small pouch. It clinked with the sound of gold.

"You've earned that. And more."

His voice dropped. "You've also earned my ear when you need it. Few men in this city have that. Don't waste it."

Alex inclined his head. "I won't."

System Summary – End of Chapter:

New Trait: Venomous Gaze (Level 0) – Paralysis on eye contact.

Rival Magister's network partially revealed.

Reputation with Rhaezar: "Trusted Problem Solver."

Political Leverage: Direct access to Magister's inner ear.
