Chapter 1

Some people say bad days are just a coincidence, but for the guardians of Altomare, today just wasn't their day.

The day had begun nicely in the peaceful city of Altomare, and with the Tour de Altomare's smashing success, it felt like nothing could go wrong.

This brings us to an 11-year-old boy named Ash Ketchum, who was visiting Altomare for a little vacation from his 'normal' adventures. Earlier that day, Ash had made some unexpected new friends, the guardians of Altomare: Latios and Latias. And while Ash had a knack for finding legendary Pokémon, he also almost got killed (or actually got killed) every time he met one.

Today was no different. Ash had nearly died three times in just one afternoon, twice from drowning, and once from a zombie Kabutops.

Two Team Rocket agents, Annie and Oakley, had broken into the Secret Garden and stolen the Soul Dew, a powerful gem that contained the soul of the eon twins' father. They kidnapped Latios, brought him to the museum, and used both captures to power the DMA, a powerful weapon that could destroy Altomare with the press of a button. When Ash and Latias came to Latios' rescue, all seemed well again. Or at least until Annie touched the corrupted Soul Dew, resulting in its quick and explosive destruction.

The waters of Altomare drained, forming a tidal wave that slowly headed toward the city. Nobody knew if they would survive Altomare's imminent destruction. Nobody, that is, except two eon dragons who rocketed toward the wave at the speed of sound.

Latios and Latias glowed bright white as they neared the wave, gathering all the strength they could. Latios, however, couldn't gather much power because he was weakened from his time in the DMA.

A blinding light flashed across the city as the dragons collided head-on with the tsunami. They held the wave in place until it split in two and collapsed, allowing the water to come back to Altomare at a much safer pace. Everything was back to normal, except for one thing: our beloved dragons were nowhere to be seen. All our heroes could see was a large sphere of light. They could only hope Latios and Latias were safe.

Latias groaned, feeling like she had just flown to Sinnoh and back. Where was she anyway? All she remembered was that the Soul Dew was stolen and a wave and-

The wave! All drowsiness left her in an instant. "Brother?" Was Latios okay? "Brother, where are you?"

She turned around and sighed in relief when she saw him, only to recoil in shock. He had lost most of his color, and Latias could see right through him, his body only giving off a faint blue glow.

Latias instantly understood what was happening. "Latios!" she cried, "Don't leave, I can't, I don't know-" She choked on her words, her vision watering from tears.

"Sister, since the Soul Dew was destroyed, one of us had to do it, and since I was already weakened, I decided it would be me."

Latias tried to grasp his claw, only for hers to pass right through. "There has to be another way!"

"I'm sorry Latias, but I only have a couple minutes left in this world." Latios grimaced, clutching his chest as his outline flickered.

"What if we used another soul to save yours?" Latias' mind raced. "Would that work?"

Latios frowned. "It's possible, but we don't know what could happen to the other person or Pokémon. They may not survive."

Latias cringed. Her brother was everything to her, and she refused to lose him now. Not when they still had their whole lives ahead of them. "We have to try!" She said firmly.

"Alright, but hurry, sister. I only have a few minutes left! Just touch whoever you want to bring back."

Latias' body tingled as she flew out of the sphere of energy. There was only one person she knew who would be willing to save her brother. One person who had just enough luck to survive.

But if he had to die for her brother, she might never forgive herself.

Back at the shore, Ash, Brock, Misty, Bianca, and Lorenzo gazed out at the silent ocean.

Bianca broke the silence. "I hope they're alright."

Ash nodded. He knew he would feel terrible if one of them got seriously hurt, or worse, killed. He knew it wouldn't be his fault, but Latias had trusted him not only with their secret home, but he had been the first one she had come to for help. He couldn't fail her now.

But speaking of Latias… Ash squinted at a red blur heading towards them. Could that be her? Were she and Latios okay?

"It's Latias!" Lorenzo shouted, although they could all tell by now.

But where was Latios?

To Ash's surprise, Latias didn't even stop to say hi. Her eyes glowed, Pikachu fell off his shoulder, and everything vanished.

~~~
Latios fought to stay conscious. Right now, he was winning, but he knew it wouldn't last long.
Please hurry, sister.
As if on cue, Latias appeared next to him, accompanied by the boy whom they had played with just this morning.
"I knew you would choose him." Latios smiled. "Is he willing?"
"I haven't asked yet," said Latias.
"Latios? What happened to you?" asked Ash, eyeing his transparent body.
Latios sighed. "Ash, I'm dying. Stopping the wave took too much energy out of me, especially after powering the DMA for so long."
"Is there anything I can do?" asked Ash. "There must be some way to save you. Do you need tears, or a song, or water, or-"
"You can save him." Latias interrupted, "We can use your soul to help restore his, but you might, you know."
"You might die, Ash." It was only fair to be honest with the boy. While Latios would rather not die, he had accepted his fate. He would have refused to risk Ash's life if it weren't for his sister.
"I've been through worse." Ash locked eyes with Latios. "What do I have to do?"
"Grab onto my claw with one hand, and Latias' claw with the other." There wasn't time to argue or question Ash's statement. If both he and Ash survived, Latios swore he could find some way to pay Ash back.
"Ash, thank you so much for this," Latios smiled gratefully. "Are you ready?"
"I'm ready,"
"Whatever you do, don't let go of either of our claws." Latios connected his mind to Ash's and slowly transferred some of Ash's energy to himself, being careful not to hurt him.
Thirty seconds later, Ash passed out. Latias gave him a look. "Will he be okay?"
"I'll do everything I can." But Ash's life force was already dwindling. He was strong, but still only human. As a legendary Pokémon, Latios needed a lot more energy than Ash could give.
A minute later, Latios did the only thing he could to keep Ash from dying. He carefully transferred a fragment of his soul onto Ash's, where it latched on. As it did, a sudden surge of energy rushed through Ash, so fast that Latios had to block some of it from hitting him and Latias.
Ash's body was glowing a shade of orange.
"What's going on?" Latias nearly dropped Ash in shock.
"I don't know," said Latios, "I can't stop the process, or all three of us will die! Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be alright." He wasn't sure, but he needed his sister to stay calm. One mistake could mean the end for Ash.
As Latios finished speaking, Ash's body began to change. His body grew about twice its normal size, and an orange triangle appeared on his chest. His arms shrank into small arms with oval-shaped hands, and his fingers fused into three claws on each hand. An orange triangle appeared on his new forehead, and his ears disappeared into his head, reappearing as two feather-shaped tuffs on top. Two orange wings erupted from his back with a loud ripping noise.
Latios stared at Ash. Time seemed to slow down, and he barely noticed his color had returned.
"Is he a Latios?" Latias stammered, "What happened?
"I had to transfer part of my soul to him to keep him alive," said Latios, "But I never expected it to do this."
Latias looked at the orange eon. "We'll have to carry him, I guess."
"Let's get back to Altomare and repair the Soul Dew." Latios was already exhausted from the nights events. Tomorrow they would sort things out. As the ball of energy faded, he and Latias put Ash on their backs, and they flew off toward the shore.
~~~

"Look!" Bianca pointed. "The light is disappearing!"

Sure enough, two red and blue dots appeared in the distance, growing as they drew closer.

"I think they're carrying something," said Misty, putting Pikachu down. "I hope nothing bad happened to Ash."

"Or weird," added Brock, "But I guess today has already been weird."

Their questions only grew as Latios and Latias flew down to them, setting an orange eon in front of them.

"Take him to your house and find somewhere for him to lie down!" A male voice filled the group's minds. "We have something we have to do!"

"Latios? You can talk?" asked Bianca, "What happened up there?"

"Pika! Pika-pi!"

"We'll explain when we get back. Just get the eon to your house!"

Bianca nodded. "Okay, but it better be good."

"I second that," said Misty.

"We'll be back as soon as we can." Latios telepathed.

With that, the siblings sped toward the museum.

Latios flew over to the pieces of the broken Soul Dew. "Ready?"

"I'm ready," said Latias, "But please, let me use my energy."

"But-"

"No buts," Latias' eyes glowed a soft blue as she picked up the pieces of the Soul Dew. "Just tell me what to do."

Latios sighed. "Alright,"

Together, they used their extra energy to piece back the Soul Dew, restoring their father's spirit to the blue gem. They quickly placed it back in the garden and headed to Lorenzo's house, both exhausted, but prepared to at least answer a few questions.

It was the least they could do for Ash.
