Chapter 1051 - Chapter 1051: A Strong Comeback

Chapter 1051: A Strong Comeback

The San Francisco 49ers' offensive running routes are so effective not only because Jim Harbaugh constantly innovates with the combination of formations and routes, but also because the intricate routes within the basic formations often turn into advantages due to Lu Ke's high-speed execution.

Take this play, for instance.

On the outside of the right wing, Logan Newnam gave up his chance to face cornerback Richard Sherman. He sprinted forward for five yards, then immediately turned and ran back, seemingly preparing to catch a pass near the sideline.

On the inside of the right wing, Ted Ginn Jr. intentionally lingered in the short-pass area, constantly moving back and forth in a five-yard space, getting tangled with outside linebacker K.J. Wright as if waiting for something.

On the inside of the left wing, Vernon Davis simply stayed in place, standing on the outside of the offensive line. After deliberately being a bit slow, he slowly ran out, setting up a matchup with outside linebacker Malcolm Smith.

On the outside of the left wing, Michael Crabtree was the most ferocious and fastest player, sprinting forward relentlessly. His steps drifted slightly toward the left sideline, creating a small arc in his route.

And we can't forget Frank Gore.

Gore's feet were right behind Lu Ke, moving back and forth. It looked like he could charge in any direction at any moment, but he didn't rush. He waited until Lu Ke had dropped back past him, then quickly darted into the right slot, instantly accelerating. His momentum was even more pronounced than Crabtree's, and he was about to cross paths with Ginn.

The five players arrived at five different spots. Their speed, rhythm, and routes were all different. The combination of fast and slow, far and near, and the presence of offensive players in the left, middle, and right areas made them completely unpredictable and impossible to read.

In this passive situation, the Seattle Seahawks' defense could only react instinctively. Both safeties, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas, quickly sprinted to their left. Ginn and Gore's crossing steps were filled with deception, and with Vernon in the middle and Sherman's quick return to cover Logan, the threat on that side was just too great.

It sounds like a long sequence of events, but it all happened in an instant after the snap. In just one second, everything changed. After Lu Ke finished his drop-back, a quick scan of his eyes gave him all the information he needed, and he released the ball in one fluid motion.

The football sailed through the air in a small arc, quickly passing over the heads of multiple players. It flew past the short-pass area and continued deep into the medium-pass zone. But this wasn't a pass to the right side; it was a pass to the left side, or rather, the right side of the Seattle Seahawks' formation.

Crabtree was in a one-on-one matchup with Brandon Browner!

Crabtree's route was the simplest: a straight sprint. Using his physical advantage, he generated a powerful momentum, advancing like a steamroller. The defender, Browner, didn't dare to confront him head-on. He could only adjust his steps to block Crabtree's path, preparing to step up and make a play when Crabtree caught the ball.

But to his surprise, as the distance between them closed, Crabtree suddenly burst into a full-speed sprint. The full release of his short-range power allowed him to immediately get past Browner. Browner only had time to raise his hands in a blocking gesture but couldn't even touch Crabtree's jersey. The two of them crossed paths.

This put Browner on high alert.

His many years of experience on the field were crucial. Although he was past his prime due to health and condition, his eight years of professional experience allowed him to make the right call. He quickly turned and saw the football flying toward him in a small arc.

Browner adjusted his steps and jumped, extending his right hand with all his might to try and block the pass and knock the ball down. But even with his fingers fully stretched and every muscle in his body engaged, he could only watch helplessly as the football glided past.

If Browner and Bruce Irvin were to talk after the game, they would surely feel the same way: that pass seemed within reach but was actually impossible to stop. They could only watch the football pass over their heads. This precision of calculation and control was a testament to the quarterback's excellent command of the entire field.

The brown football lightly cleared Browner's interception and then quickly descended, finding Crabtree, who was two steps away.

This was a pass of about 16 yards to the left side.

However, to control the arc, Lu Ke had pushed the ball a little farther. The distance between the receiver and the cornerback was about 12 to 13 yards, which allowed the football to avoid Browner's interception during its descent. This also meant that Crabtree's footwork wasn't quite perfect.

So, the 49ers' number 15 wide receiver was a half-beat slower than Browner. He jumped calmly, and on the football's continuing downward arc, he was a step ahead, accurately plucking the football out of the air. He firmly controlled it with both hands, but before his body could feel the immense pull of gravity, he saw another white figure quickly charging toward him.

It was Kam Chancellor.

Because Lu Ke's pass release was so fast, only about 1.88 seconds, the defenders' entire thought process couldn't keep up. They were being pulled like puppets.

Chancellor and Thomas had just shifted their weight to meet Ginn and Gore. They then caught sight of Lu Ke's pass release. As a reflex, they forcibly changed their body weight, stumbling toward Crabtree and Browner's position.

If they hadn't, Crabtree would have just needed to get past Browner's defense for that side of the field to be completely empty for the Seahawks.

In this critical situation, the talent of the Legion of Boom was on full display. Despite being completely on the back foot, Chancellor and Thomas somehow managed to change direction and unleash their speed and agility, starting a second pursuit at an unprecedented pace.

It wasn't just the two safeties. Outside linebacker Malcolm Smith also realized the serious danger, shook off his one-on-one coverage with Vernon, and quickly started to run back. But Smith's talent and condition were clearly not on par with the two members of the Legion of Boom. His feet couldn't keep up. Even though he was trying, he was still a bit far from the play.

Chancellor was already close to the center, and he was the first defender to arrive.

Seeing Crabtree jump and complete the catch, Chancellor was too late to break up the pass. So, he just made a quick, horizontal dive, trying to tackle Crabtree's waist in mid-air. But his feet had just left the ground, and in his peripheral vision, he could see the off-balance Browner still trying his best to make a play.

After Browner jumped, he unfortunately couldn't knock the football down. But with his body leaning backward, he went for broke and started waving his hands, trying to slap Crabtree's hands and disrupt the catch before he could secure the football. He collapsed like a domino.

Everything happened in a flash.

Browner was the first to collide with Crabtree.

Crabtree was sent flying.

Chancellor then collided with him a second later.

By an unlucky twist of fate, Chancellor's tackle missed its mark. Instead of tackling, he just brushed against Crabtree's shoulder in a collision. The force wasn't solid, just the pure momentum of his body being thrown forward. The main force of the impact was on Browner.

With one force vertical and one horizontal, their combined power seemed to cancel each other out. Crabtree was sent flying backward at an angle, but not very far—about two steps. However, the immense pressure on his muscles made his body start to tremble. His feet then felt the powerful reactive force from the ground.

Crabtree stumbled backward, his footwork completely lost, and he could only rely on instinct to adjust.

In his stumble, he used his core strength to control his body and prevent himself from falling. But the force of the collision was so fierce that his hands seemed to have overexerted, and the football slipped out of his palms, bouncing on his fingertips like a bouncy ball.

Was a nightmare repeating itself?

All of Crabtree's muscles tensed up. He wasn't thinking about those dropped passes from the regular season. To be precise, there were no unnecessary thoughts in his brain. He was fully focused on his catching motion and footwork.

After the football slipped out of his hands, he spread his palms, gently bouncing the football up like a juggling clown, once, and again…

Lu Ke's pass didn't have a lot of force on it, and the fumbled catch was mainly due to the combined collision forces. Now, with Crabtree's patient adjustment, the football's spin and force began to soften. Then, Crabtree firmly grabbed the football again with his right hand!

A nightmare?

Not today!

But just as he regained control of the football, Thomas appeared right behind him. The tide of defense wasn't over yet. The Legion of Boom earned their name for a reason! A second collision, a second standoff, was right in front of him!
