On the training field, the players were running with their heads down, looking like it was just a normal day of practice. But if you looked closely, you could notice something was off.
The players who were running were split into two distinct parts.
The players who had been in a wait-and-see state for the past two weeks had also gradually integrated into the team based on their choices. As a result, two completely different groups of people were running on the field, with a distance of half a field between them, clearly separated.
After the incredible victory in the second week of the regular season, the team seemed to finally be starting to come together. But it only lasted for two days. When they met again, the conflict became sharp again, even more so than before. It was becoming more and more obvious and difficult to deal with, with no sign of a solution.
Was it because the team was still in the process of integrating after the major cleanup during the offseason? Or was it because the conflict between the veteran players and the new players was inherently irreconcilable? Or was it because of the Chinese-American quarterback?
But these were all just guesses. The role Lu Ke's Chinese-American identity played in the San Francisco 49ers' locker room conflict was unknown.
After all, in the entire league, there was only one Chinese-American quarterback, and no one knew how things would turn out, how they should be resolved, or how the other players would react.
For reference, the situation was very similar when the first black player entered the NFL and when the first black player entered the MLB. All the players, coaches, and owners in the entire league were against it. All the fans also protested and rejected them. Black players even had to face ubiquitous death threats. The teams that chose to hire black players also had to face tremendous pressure from public opinion and their own fans.
Naturally, in the locker room, the black players had no friends and were all alone.
Of course, competitive sports are different after all. In the end, they still relied on their own strength and performance to win one game after another, proving their ability, winning recognition, and changing history.
It was now the 21st century, and the situation had changed. Racial segregation had become a thing of the past. But the situation of a Chinese-American player could still be a slight reference.
In addition to the two wins, the San Francisco 49ers welcomed back Alex Smith in the third week of the regular season. For the team's quarterback position, Lu Ke was no longer the only option. In the eyes of many, he was not even the best option.
Whether to fight under an undrafted rookie Chinese-American quarterback or to play under a veteran who was a former number one overall pick, it was clear that the players had already made their choice before the coach had made his starting decision.
Today was the official media day. All the reporters would ask about Alex and Jim's choice regarding the starting quarterback. This was a topic of concern for everyone. Even if a decision was not made today, the team had to make a choice by Friday at the latest, or they would not have enough time to prepare for the game on Sunday.
Thus, the locker room today became a powder keg.
While running, Parish's emotions not only didn't calm down but became more and more agitated. He glanced at Alex several times with a heart full of frustration, and he finally couldn't hold it in. "What was that all about just now? Did you lose your mind? That guy is way too arrogant. If you don't suppress his arrogance, there won't be a place for you on this team later!"
As he spoke, Parish simply stopped, panting heavily, and shouted angrily, "Don't tell me you're just going to give up and surrender like that? This is your team! I don't want to play under that little brat!"
Parish's voice echoed in the empty stadium, but it didn't make Alex stop. He continued to run forward, seemingly unaffected.
Parish was both angry and helpless. He gritted his teeth and finally started running again, catching up.
"This is my team," Alex's voice rang out in a calm and orderly manner. Talking while running required him to adjust his breathing and control his rhythm. So, Alex remained calm and said in a matter-of-fact tone.
Parish thought he had misheard him and turned his head, a confused look on his face. Then Alex confirmed it again, "This is my team." Parish's expression immediately brightened, and his excitement was hard to contain. He waved his fists and was about to jump for joy.
"But I will choose my own way," Alex added immediately. Parish was stunned. This time, Alex turned his head and looked at Parish. "This is a football field. Those boring and stupid tricks are meaningless. Only on the field, by truly defeating him and rightfully winning back my starting position, can I retake this team."
"But…" Parish still tried to say something.
But Alex rudely interrupted Parish, asking him back without giving him a chance to breathe, "What, you don't have faith in me? You don't think I can beat him with my skills?"
Parish was speechless. A momentary hesitation flashed in his mind, but it was gone in an instant. Parish immediately came to his senses. "I have faith. Of course, I have faith in you, Alex. But you've been injured for six weeks and only started recovering last week. How are you feeling right now…"
"Recovering," Alex said truthfully. It was always difficult to return to training after being injured and out for a long time. It required two or three times the effort to get his feel and rhythm back. "Yesterday, I officially started passing practice. Today, I'm ready to join in on the physical contact drills. As for the results…we'll have to wait and see. I'm a little impatient now."
Parish nodded repeatedly, agreeing. "I can't wait either. You have to show that rookie what's what and teach him a good lesson, so he knows what a real starting quarterback should be like!"
The competition had officially begun!
"Jim, you should know that this is not a solution to the problem." Offensive Coordinator Craig Roman frowned, a worried look on his face. "The conflict in the locker room will only get worse if you just suppress it and punish them. It will never be resolved."
"Yeah, I think so too," Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio also said, nodding in agreement. "Instead of suppressing them, you should have let them fight it out just now. Let them have a good fight, fist to fist, and vent all their negative emotions. It's much simpler and more direct. These athletes are all full of energy, and they need to vent it, and then they'll be fine."
"So, you're saying I should just let the players shit all over my head?" Jim's anger still hadn't subsided. He kicked the chair next to him fiercely. The flush on his cheeks still hadn't faded, making him look like a cooked shrimp. "If they have too much energy, then they should train harder. If 30 laps aren't enough, they can run 50. If that's still not enough, we can double their strength training in the gym. Mark and Kevin will definitely be happy about that."
Jim put his hands on his hips and paced back and forth in the empty locker room, seeming unable to calm down.
Kipp Krist also scratched his head, looked at Craig and Vic, and found that both of them had an expression that said, "I tried my best." Kipp could only let out a long sigh and say bravely, "Jim, is this your solution? Locker room problems should never be underestimated. Don't you have a better idea?"
For any team that required teamwork, locker room problems were not to be ignored. Throughout history, countless dynasties have collapsed because of conflicts in the locker room, which led to the end of an entire era.
The San Francisco 49ers were not a top-tier team, but a team that was on the rise. After the complete rebuilding in the offseason, the team was now in an ascending phase. Not only was there the new vitality brought by the quarterback, but the defense and the offensive line were also getting better. If the locker room problems couldn't be solved properly, the light of their two consecutive wins would soon fade.
Facing Kipp's kind inquiry, Jim waved his hand irritably, as if he was shooing away flies. "You guys expect me to come up with a solution? A bunch of testosterone-filled football players? Do you want us to be like high school girls, sitting around a campfire and having a heart-to-heart talk and sharing our feelings? Bullshit!"
Jim took a few deep breaths, and his chest rose and fell violently. "I'm the coach, and we are all coaches. Our job is not to be their babysitters, but to devise tactics and prepare for the game!" At this point, Jim nodded hard, as if he was affirming his own thoughts. "Yes, we need to discuss the starting quarterback for this week. It's the official media day in a bit, and we need to have a unified message."
The members of the coaching staff exchanged glances and all looked at Craig and Vic—the offensive and defensive coordinators, whose positions were only second to Jim. Their gazes all raised a similar question:
Is this how they were going to solve the locker room problem? Or, more accurately, were they just going to let it slide? Punish them by running 30 laps and then just forget about it? Is this really okay? What about those irreconcilable conflicts? Don't they need to think of other solutions?
But Craig and Vic both spread their hands, shrugged, and didn't say anything, looking helpless. So, everyone else also shut their mouths.
"Winning! The best way to solve all problems is to win!" Jim clenched his fists and said passionately, "So, we must now focus on winning. For the third week's game, the starting quarterback…what are your thoughts? Alex or Lu Ke?"
In a way, Jim was right. The locker room problem was, in fact, a quarterback problem: Alex Smith or Lu Ke?
