Got you baby šš„
We'll make Chapter 11 nice and long ā not just an opening scene but a full sequence with:
April's uncle revealing bits of the truth (but holding back some secrets š).
A dangerous journey out of the cave.
The first meeting with a kingdom representative ā showing how Fire and Moon kingdoms move.
A tension-filled conversation where we plant hints of alliances, betrayals, and the coming clash.
A closing hook t
The air in the cave still hummed with the aftertaste of magic. April's hands trembled, not from fear, but from the effort it had taken to stand against the silver-masked leader's attack.
Her uncle's eyes followed the last wisp of violet light fading into the stone. "You've just made yourself a target, April. Not just for him⦠but for the kingdoms."
She frowned. "Kingdoms?"
"The five who rule over the April-born," he said, his voice gravelly. "Fire, Moon, Sun, Air, and Water. Each with their own claim over you ā and over that Mirror."
April glanced at the Mirror's surface. It had gone still, but the pulse she'd felt earlier lingered in her chest like a second heartbeat.
"My motherā¦" she began, but her uncle raised a hand.
"She was Fire Kingdom's strongest Ember Blade ā until they feared her power. That fear is why she's gone." His gaze turned to steel. "And it's why they'll come for you."
The words dug into her like hooks. "Then why help me?"
"Because," he said, pushing himself to his feet despite the chains, "blood chooses blood."
With a sharp twist of his wrists, the glowing cuffs cracked, runes sparking before falling dark. April stared.
"You could break them this whole time?"
A faint smirk. "I was waiting for the right fire to arrive."
They moved quickly after that, navigating the narrow tunnels. Each drip of water, each shift in the shadows kept April's fire close to the surface.
When they emerged from the mouth of the cave, the night was unnaturally bright. A silver moon hung heavy above, its light cutting through the trees ā and revealing a figure waiting on the path.
A woman in deep indigo armor, her hair like liquid night, stood with her arms crossed. The silver crescent sigil of the Moon Kingdom gleamed on her chestplate.
"April Solborn," she said, her voice smooth but cold. "The Moon Queen has been expecting you."
April stiffened. "I didn't know I had an appointment."
The woman's gaze flicked to the Mirror under April's cloak. "The Mirror doesn't move without reason. And it doesn't belong to Fire hands alone."
Her uncle stepped forward, his posture bristling. "She's under my protection."
"Your protection," the woman said with a trace of a smile, "is why the Moon Queen wants her now. Protection⦠or possession. You choose."
April's fire flared in her palm before she could stop it. "I'm not choosing sides."
The woman's eyes narrowed. "Every April-born chooses eventually. Some with a crown. Others⦠with chains."
From the forest's edge, another voice broke the stand-off ā deep, commanding, and carrying the scent of smoke.
A man in crimson and gold armor stepped into the moonlight, his sword resting easily in his grip. The Fire Kingdom crest blazed on his chest.
"Step away from the Ember Sovereign," he said to the Moon warrior, "or I'll make sure you regret standing under her moonlight."
The air between them thickened, heat meeting cold, gold clashing with silver.
April looked from one to the other, the Mirror's heartbeat now pounding in her hands.
For a moment, no one moved. The wind itself seemed to hold its breath.
Then the Fire knight smiled faintly. "Looks like the war's starting early."
š„ Teaser for Chapter 12:
