Chapter 2 - Null zone

[Congratulations Max Fenton. You have awoken Magical, Anti-magical and Temporal concepts]

'Wow,' he inwardly awed. 'That's crazy.'

There were a total of 7 known concepts in the world.

Magic, Anti-magic, Time, Soul, Science, Technology and Forbidden.

Each one with its own physics and mental requirements and well, of course luck to obtain, making ever even getting one incredible and worth celebration.

And now, he managed to pull of three. Three out of the eight. And their esquisite combination made it all the more commendable.

These were the kind of stuff mages yearned to have and required high ranking not to mention expensive material to awaken just one of the above.

In fact, wowing alone was an underappreciation of his wonderful power.

'Status,' he mentally instructed. He wasn't sure if anything was supposed to happen as he had only heard of such but as expected a holographic screen transitioned into sight with dim hovering rays.

Inventory∆

After a quick glance, he first observed that concept type most likely determined the data displayed on one's status.

He then individually went through all the details before noting something odd.

'Unidentified!,' he wondered.

How could the status not be able to identify his class? Wasn't it just supposed to know? If it were unknown why put it at all?

He continued reading through his status until a characteristic sound awoke in the darkness ahead reminding him that he was in no library but a freaking deadly dungeon.

Growl

He turned his head in the direction of the sound. Glowing red eyes pierced from beyond the darkness.

Growl!!!

Again, the sound came but this time more confirmed with an obvious killing intent hidden in the intensified snarl.

The creature soon made a slow approach as its unmistakable features basked into the light.

Its exterior was surfaced with numerous glowing cracks with larva patterns within and around. And between the cracks was an impenetrable, almost metallic skin shimmering with a blinding silvery lustre under the green dungeon sky.

As it made its slow approach, its trail was marked with deposits of ash and burnt vegetation, accompanied with a subtle smoky scent.

A magma jaguar.

The jaguar first attacked with an inferno fireball thrust out from its mouth. The attack was sharp and fast approaching.

Its blazing fury raged violently, rocketted with immense speed.

Max expertly dodged with a back flip and mid air pulled out an Ability book from his cross pouch.

He activated the book as soon as he made contact with the ground and forged a dense translucent mana shield dissipating the fireball attack.

The jaguar seemed surprised at Max's defense.

Max smiled. "Is that all you've got?", he taunted.

Again the jaguar fired another attack. This time more direct and heavy, too much for a mere block and with a massive release of associates as well.

"One, two, three… twelve," Max quickly counted. They were coming from all directions and obviously too numerous to dodge them all.

But just before the attack hit, Max's world shifted.

His senses grew sharper. Perception, guard and physique all heightened, with an omnipresent area bound perception to ever detail happening around him.

"What's going on?"

His eyes and ears were sharper and more receptive and selective to surrounding stimuli.

His dumbfounded stare involuntarily peered into atomic buildups and molecular structures all arrayed in snail-like motion.

Everything dimmed down– the trees, rocks all lost their respective hue.

Everything except the fireballs heading for him but even that wasn't immune to the depressed atmosphere that retarded all movements.

He took advantage of the queer phenomenon and countered the fireballs with some attacks of his own.

In a split second, he shot through every single attack with furnished precision causing all to explode before half the distance could be covered.

"What just happened?", Max wondered but didn't have much time to as the jaguar pounced towards him in a fierce retort.

Again, the earth seemed to pace down.

All colors were gone except the highlighted tint on his target. From Max's perspective, its paws danced in the air as if its entire body was suspended by some kind of invisible string and under water.

As its silvery exterior floated in the air, Max quickly figured something out.

This wasn't some slow-mo spell cast around but his reaction– Null zone.

Though he didn't fully understand it, whatever this climate was, he wasn't affected by it and better yet was quickly adapting to it.

Every second counted for about half the time in the real world, hence to the jaguar even the slightest of movements appeared as a lightning fast attack.

Max too had just figured out what was happening– it was a worldly reaction to his concept.

Mid-fight he was ecstatic about it and endlessly pondered on the possibilities and experiments he could try with this.

He had twice the time to do everything he ever wanted– that was if there weren't any limitations to the skill.

But wait, if he was twice as fast, he wondered.

'Could it be that…'

He was experimenting. Risky for a newbie and at such high stakes but curiosity will always be the mother of innovation.

He tightened his fist and threw a punch at the beast.

His fist pierced with a comet-like blaze into the jaguar's torso and it coughed up some blood, dangerously flying backwards.

"Gotcha!"

Strangely, the magma on Max's arm didn't seem to hurt at the moment but as the colours returned he felt a slow approaching burning sensation and briskly waved it off before any real damage could be done.

"Pain too, huh," he rightly inferred. "So it wasn't only speed but all my abilities too. That's awesome," he inferred from his experiment.

The jaguar bashed against a stalactite and fell down dead on the ground.

[Congratulations! You have slayed your first beast]

The energy he felt before was exhilarating and he wondered how powerful he could get if he used it around the clock.

[Reaction: Null zone]

[Period: 98secs | Effectiveness: ×2]

"Makes sense."

At Max's current level, the reaction only doubled his abilities and had a duration of time it could be used for.

"Better save it for now. It'll be my little ace."

He walked up to the dead predator with its shattered glossy fur and diminished crackle.
