"Yes," Jake said. "Your grandparents," Jake added, realizing that was the only way he could get Timothy to understand before Timothy started asking questions that reminded him Timothy was only but a child.
Timothy's eyes widened in surprise. "Grandparents?" he asked, thinking back to his conversation with Jake when he'd told him all about his family.
Charles smiled softly, stepping forward with a small gift bag. "We've wanted to meet you for a long time," he said. "You can call me Grandpa Charles."
Evelyn crouched to Timothy's level, her composure giving way to pure emotion. "And me, Grandma Evelyn."
Timothy looked up at Bella, eyes shining with disbelief and joy. It felt as though too many people were getting closer to him.
"Mommy," he whispered loudly, "I have grandparents?"
Bella nodded, her throat tight. "Yes, baby. You do."
Timothy grinned, the kind of grin that took over his whole face. "Daddy told me about you!"
